“ Our guiding principle is that design is neither an intellectual nor a material affair, but simply an integral part of the stuff of life, necessary for everyone in a civilized society.” — WALTER GROPIUS

Our learning environment is dynamic and innovative. Our students are inquisitive and motivated. Our inspirational faculty and staff are committed to excellence. This is how the College of Architecture, Planning & Design (APDesign) maintains its national reputation and supports Kansas State University’s strategic plan to become a top 50 public research university by 2025.

Perhaps better than anyone, you know what APDesign can do. With three programs consistently ranked in the top 15 nationally and student work that routinely earns media attention and competitive awards, we are building upon a strong foundation. Now we plan to accomplish even more, and we invite you to join us.

Through the Innovation and Inspiration Campaign, we will raise $28 million for APDesign in support of our 2025 goals and to benefit

four areas: student success, faculty development, facility enhancement and excellence funds to support emerging needs. We couldn’t enjoy such a high level of success without support from alumni and friends, and we call on you now to help us reach this transformational goal.

Student successWhat makes a college education excellent? For students in APDesign, it’s an innovative academic experience coupled with inspirational opportunities outside the classroom.

For students who analyze how design affects quality of care, it’s the opportunity for research, service learning and community outreach. For students getting a firsthand look at European architecture, it’s the opportunity to study abroad. Who creates these opportunities? K-State alumni and friends like you.

APDesign’s vision is to be a nationally recognized center of design and planning excellence and a nexus of interdisciplinary engagement, outreach and research serving the university, the profession, and society.

We know APDesign students face extra costs for studio projects, field trips and related materials. Currently, only two-thirds are financially able to study abroad and one-third can take advantage of internships. To send the most qualified, prepared graduates into the workforce, we must work together to ensure financial need is no barrier to opportunity.

With your help, we can increase graduate student compensation, research experience and student scholarships for immediate or long-term use. Together we can deliver the opportunities expected at highly-ranked colleges and universities.

Faculty developmentFaculty and staff inspire APDesign students to think big and dream bigger — they are the cornerstone of an innovative academic experience. The ability to hire competitively will support ambitious research agendas and diversify our worldview, better preparing students for a global marketplace.

Our dedicated faculty and staff deserve recognition through professional development and endowed awards. They must have the graduate research assistants and technology they need to deliver a world-class education to our students. This is an investment in excellence for our college, but also in K-State’s strategic plan to become a top 50 public research university by 2025.

Facility enhancementA world-class education needs a world-class home. When prospective students visit APDesign, one of the first things they assess is aesthetic appeal. Is our classroom technology up to date? Do we offer enough physical space to research and learn comfortably? Does our environment encourage collaborative learning across all disciplines? With your help, our answer to these questions will be yes.

APDesign will build Regnier Hall, a three-story center for collaborative learning and design, in present-day Seaton Court. Reinventing how we utilize Seaton Court will increase spatial efficiency, enhance the student experience and serve as a model for innovation in the historic core of the K-State campus. A simultaneous renovation and expansion of Seaton Hall East will improve acoustic quality, energy efficiency and economic viability.

Altogether, the APDesign Complex will see several improvements:• Additional studios• A secure art gallery• A 300-seat auditorium• An outdoor recessed amphitheater and rooftop garden• Additional offices for administration and student services• An atrium lobby with creative common space and a new

accessible Weigel Library• Energy efficiency, aesthetic appeal and collaborative

spaces• Significantly increased technology and security

APDesign is committed to a future in this complex. With your help, we will create a learning environment on par with our national reputation. In support of K-State 2025, the revitalized APDesign Complex will stimulate an inquisitive, creative and diverse student body actively engaged as leaders within the college, university and profession.

Excellence fundsExcellence funds provide us with flexible resources to meet areas of greatest need as well as emerging opportunities. Excellence funds may support specific needs in curriculum areas, lectures, symposia, and student and faculty travel for professional and personal development. These funds are critical to supporting the college’s national reputation as a leader in promoting sustainable design, aesthetic delight, social equity and economic vitality.

Endowed funds connect generationsEndowed funds create a lasting legacy and the assurance that your fund will make a difference well beyond your lifetime. The principal of the gift is never invaded and is expected to continually increase, while awards are made from the earnings. This means that the endowed fund you create today will reach into the future to continue to provide support for the purpose that is close to your heart. Whether you choose to support students, faculty, or another area, your heart goes with your gift to future generations.

Because the size of the endowment is directly correlated to our capacity to serve future generations of K-Staters, the endowment is an important benchmark toward our goal to become a top 50 public research university by 2025.

Supporting students long termInvestment in faculty drives innovative research in APDesign. Under the leadership of Michael Gibson, assistant professor of architecture, student teams recently collaborated to develop, build and test experimental glass curtain wall systems designed for energy efficiency.

The students’ experimental curtain wall designs eventually factored into their comprehensive architectural design for a new branch of the Des Moines Public Library in Iowa. Gibson earned the college’s privately-funded Treanor Architects Faculty Award in recognition of his leadership, and he decided to reinvest funding from that award into future student research projects.

Support from corporate partners Manko Window Systems and BNIM Architecture helped fifth-year students gain

valuable research and development experience.

Designing for the futureKate Gutierrez wanted to be an architect since middle school, when she impressed a teacher with her design-build project.

The Fullerton, California native achieved her dream with an architecture degree from K-State, which she chose for its affordability, scholarship availability and leading reputation among architects.

Gutierrez’s financial aid included the Cleve Humbert Study Abroad Scholarship, which allowed her to study culture and architecture in Italy. Such private investments have helped APDesign become K-State’s leading college for study abroad participation.

“It was quite amazing to actually go see the historical architecture I had studied since my first semester at K-State,” Gutierrez said. “The scholarship truly helped make it happen.”

The Cleve Humbert Study Abroad Scholarship helped Kate Gutierrez study Italian culture and architecture at Centro Studi Città di Orvieto.

Seaton Complex revitalization and expansionAPDesign consistently ranks in the top 15 schools chosen nationally by industry professionals on the Design Futures Council.

When it’s completed in summer 2017, the APDesign Complex will align the college’s facilities with its national reputation and professional values through the revitalization and expansion of Seaton Hall East and construction of the adjoining Regnier Hall.

With $60 million in funding from the state of Kansas, the college now looks to raise $15 million from alumni, friends and industry partners. Founders Guild member Victor Regnier, ’71, Los Angeles, gave $4 million through his family’s V+H Charitable Foundation to support the construction project and other college initiatives. He said alumni support is key to elevating the college to the next level.

“The college has always represented quality, and they do extraordinary things with the financial support they receive,” Regnier said. “They have excellent academic

programs and a dedicated faculty, and with additional funding they will excel even further.”

Nearly $500,000 has been gifted or pledged by the Founders Guild, a dedicated group of professionals who champion the college’s cause. They funded a design study with Ennead Architects, the first step in the project.

“If you want to run a major program, you need the right facilities to attract the right students. People are looking to go where they can excel,” said Pete Kruse, Carlsbad, California, a 1981 graduate who joined the Founders Guild with his wife, Janet. “I want to ensure we keep the college competitive and get the best talent we can. I’m hoping other folks feel motivated to do the same.”

Support and guidance from Founders Guild members proved critical to moving the Seaton Hall project forward, said Tim de Noble, dean of APDesign.

“Whether through direct support or stalwart advocacy at the university and state levels, we are extremely grateful for the dedication of Founders Guild members,” he said. “Their impact cannot be overstated.”

The Seaton Revitalization and Expansion will create a 21st century learning environment by modernizing Seaton Hall East Wing and connecting it with a 114,000-square-foot expansion.
