Epiphany is January 6th
Epiphany always falls on January 6th as we remember the coming of the Wise Men and the end of the Twelve
Days of Christmas! Just as the light of a star called these Gentiles to Worship and Faith, so the Light of Christ
continues to call us, remembering that Jesus is, “...a Light to lighten the Gentiles…” There are seven Sundays in
Epiphany, with readings in Revelation that culminate on the Sunday of Transfiguration!
Thank You To All Who Made Our Advent/Christmas Worship Season So Special!
A special Thank You to Lana Bennett who worked so hard organizing our Christmas Party. Lana ordered the
food for both our Thanksgiving Event and our Christmas Party. We also want to thank those of you who helped
set up and clean up. Carolyn Barbian, Ramona Feldmann, Jeannette Rhodes, Marcia McCready, Mark Calderon
and others. Those who helped set up the Nativity Scene at Mt. Olive were Julia & Michael Ashburn (they also
supplied their truck), Mark Calderon, Allen Griffiths, Carolyn Eisenberg, Pastor Kilian, Joe & Kimshelley Lessard,
Those who helped decorate the church were Lyndonia Spearson, Carolyn Eisenberg, Jeannette Rhodes, Carolyn
Barbian, Letty and Pastor Kilian and John McKenna. We also want to thank Mary Harper, Kimshelley Lessard,
Allen Griffiths, Letty Kilian, Travis Bauer, John McKenna, Sharon Dean and Susan Zeidner for their beautiful mu-sic this Christmas Season. We also want to thank those of you who went Christmas Caroling with us and thank
Gaye & Dietmar Kruger for hosting an “After Christmas Caroling Party” at their home.

The Mission of Pilgrim Lutheran Church is to be an incarnation of Jesus Christ to
people of all ages in the Santa Monica area and throughout the world.
Narthex Prayer Box
Prayer requests can be placed in the Church prayer box in the narthex. Please make use of this blessing and re-
member the power of prayer! Pastor Kilian is the only person who opens the box. Please mark the prayers for
private or public petition. Please see the “Prayer List” in the Newsletter and help us keep it updated.

Office if you would like a personalized set and you will be given a Membership Number. Thank You for giving to the
Lord!
Michelle Montgomery Has Moved
Our Sister, Michelle Montgomery, has moved to Colorado Springs. Although we will miss her, we never say “good-
bye” at Pilgrim. Keep in touch with her and keep her and her husband Michel in your prayers as they transition to
their new home. See the photo of Michelle holding her newborn niece, Clara on the back page.
Pilgrim Lutheran Church/ Pacifica Christian High School Lease Extension
The new Pacifica Lease Extension Agreement has been approved and signed, extending the lease until August 30,
2030, ensuring many more years of ministry together in this special place on the corner of 18th and Wilshire Boule-
vard. Pilgrim is the only church on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica, giving us an important place in the communi-
ty. We celebrate our partnership in the Lord! We are excited about this extension and look forward to working
with Pacifica, partnering with them on Christian Education and holding occasional joint Worship Services and other
events with them. Pastor Kilian has been teaching some religion classes for Pacifica and the students enjoy these spe-
cial teaching sessions.
Luther Court Sign
“Luther Court” is the new name for the gymnasium/auditorium as you will see the special sign, given to Pastor
Kilian on Pastor Appreciation Day. The sign is over the North West entry door of the gym. (See photo on back
page). Please also notice the “Sola” Grace, Faith and Scripture banner hung therein. This is a special area, named
after a special individual...all to the Glory of God!
From Dietmar Kruger
Dear Pilgrim
It has been a most rewarding four years serving you as your President, thank you for this privilege. My work load
and contribution to Pilgrim’s business affairs was very minimal compared to the immense amount of work our Pas-
tor, Nathan Kilian and the Council have accomplished. I am grateful and very much appreciative of your past sup-
port, your contributions, and pledge to support our Church, and our Pastor. May our Lord continue to guide us,
give us wisdom and love so that we will not falter or get tired of our commitment to Pilgrim’s mission. May God
bless all of you, our Church, our Pastor and our Country.
With Love, Dietmar Kruger

Adult Bible Classes, Worship Services and more… “Wednesday Night Live” Reconvenes January 11th
“WNL” (Wednesday Night Live) Bible Class meets at 6 p.m. in the Conference Room. We will continue our study
on the Gospel of St. John the Beloved. Luther said of this book, “(in) John’s Gospel….you find depicted in mastery fash-
ion how faith in Christ overcomes sin, death and hell, and gives life, righteousness, and salvation. This is the real na-
ture of the Gospel.” Please join us, and come early at 5:30 p.m. for refreshments and Fellowship.
“WNL” will NOT meet January 25th, instead, attend the Wednesday Evening Prayer Worship Service!
“Prime Time Bible Class” Reconvenes January 12th at 11 a.m.
Prime Time Bible Class will meet January 12th and 26th. The Bible Class is followed by lunch (bring your own) and
the celebration of birthdays. Coffee and dessert will be provided. The class has begun a new series titled “Heroes of
the Bible” in which we have been exploring heroic achievements of various Bible Characters such as Noah, Abra-
ham, David, Rahab, Esther and others. A hero is often defined as one who shows great courage and strength in
achieving an act of noble purpose. We will take a look at these individuals and a specific event of their heroic action,
all in order that we may appreciate the Hero of Heroes, our great and almighty God. This is a Senior's Bible Study,
but all ages are invited. Check it out! Prime Time meets the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at 11 a.m. in the
Discovery Conference Room. You will be glad you came!
Discovery Seminary January 28th
Pastor Kilian will be holding a “Discovery” Seminar on Saturday, January 28th (10 a.m.—3 p.m.) for prospective
members or for anyone interested in learning about Lutheran Doctrine or Christianity in general. It is always fun to
attend these interesting meetings and refresh our knowledge. Lunch and all materials will be supplied free of charge.
Please contact the Church Office if you are interested in attending this event.
Three New Babies Welcomed into Pilgrim’s Family in One Month!
Chris and Melissa Martin
Little Kaylie Anne Martin was born to Melissa and Chris Martin (and brother Kaiden) on December 1st, and Pilgrim was pleased to welcome her into her eternal life through the waters of Holy Baptism on Christmas Day, December
25th. Please keep her physical and spiritual growth in your prayers!
Jennifer and Joseph Lasher
Little Stanley Lasher was born on December 5th to the delight of Jennifer and Joseph Lasher and big sister Elizabeth.
Little Stanley will soon be baptized.
Jared and Natalie Meyer
Baby Gia Morgan Meyer was baptized on November 27th, the daughter of Jared and Natalie Meyer, and sister of big
brother Jake.
These precious babies are a joyful addition to our Pilgrim Family. We also love having little Evelyn Lily Edwards
join us during our Worship Services. Bringing children to Church is a wonderful way to teach them about Jesus,
and to make them feel comfortable in a Church Service during these very important formative years. Pastor Kilian
does a wonderful Children’s Lesson during the Worship Service. Ann Evelyn is hosting the “Parents and Twos” ses-
sions once a month, further introducing the littlest children to Jesus.
January Bible Class Sunday Morning Adult Bible Class, meets at 9:00 a.m. before the 10:00 a.m. Worship Service, in the Discovery
Conference Room. All are invited. Pastor Kilian leads this Class. We are doing a background study of the Pericope
Readings for each Sunday. This includes an Old Testament Reading, Epistle and Gospel reading for each Sunday specifi-
cally chosen to coincide with this Season of the Church Year. Understanding these Readings for each Sunday will
enhance your Worship experience and build a greater base of Biblical Knowledge, all for the sake of growth in
Faith. You will have a “head start” on the Sunday Bulletin readings! We have had many compliments on this inter-
esting Bible Class!
Gospel Readings for January
January 1 Luke 2:21 (Jesus’ circumcision and naming on the eighth day.)
January 8 Matthew 3:13–17 (The Father’s voice proclaims Jesus as God’s beloved Son.)
January 15 John 1:29–42a (God’s Lamb takes away the world’s sin.)
January 22 Matthew 4:12–25 (Jesus calls His first disciples.)
January 29 Matthew 5:1–12 (The Beatitudes.)
Take home your bulletin and use it as a great source of prayer, songs, readings, and reflections for the week.

Sunday School~ Come and join the FUN!!
Please bring your children to Sunday School! All children are encouraged to participate in the fun time of learning
and spiritual growth. Children will enjoy hearing about God’s love in Scripture through stories, crafts and games.
Invite a friend and let’s build up our Sunday School. Tamara Omwami and Ann Evelyn serve as our excellent
teachers. Sunday School meets at 9:00 a.m. in the Preschool classrooms. Call the church office to sign your child
up for Sunday School by calling (310) 829-4113.

January Sunday School Update From Ann Evelyn
January Sunday School lessons are from the New Testament. Our materials are for Kindergarten to grade 6.
Weather permitting, we meet 9-9:50 am at the picnic tables next to the parking lot patio. Otherwise, class is in
the blue classroom on the lower level. Parents and guests are welcome. Classes aim for Bible literacy, under-
standing of the Word and fun. “Parents and Twos” will meet in the gym January 8th after Worship.
Please read the message from Carolyn Barbian regarding the January 21st event for children ages 3 to 8.
From Carolyn Barbian:
Save the Date! Pilgrim is sponsoring a gathering for children and their parents on Saturday, January 21, 2017 from
Noon to 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be served followed by activities based upon the theme of Noah’s ark. The program
is most suitable for children ages 3 to 8; however, there will be fun activities for everyone. We hope that you and
your children will join us. More details will follow at a later date. If you are willing to assist us on January 21,
please contact Carolyn Barbian.

Holy Humor
From the mouths of children,
regarding what Love is!

bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my

name is different. You just know that your name is
safe in their mouth.” Billy, age 4
“If you want to learn to love better, you should
start with a friend who you hate.” Nikka, age 6
“Love is like a little old woman and a little old man
who area still friends even after they know each
other so well.” Tommy, age 6
“Love is when you go out and give somebody
most of your French Fries without making them
give you any of theirs.” Chrissie, age 6
“Love is what makes you smile when you're
tired.” Terri, age 4
“Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my
daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him,
to make sure the taste is OK.” Danny, age 7
“My mommy loves me more than anybody. You
don’t see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night.”
Clare, age 6
“Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece
of chicken.” Elaine, age 5
“You really shouldn't say “I Love You unless you
mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot.
People forget.” Jessica, age 8
“Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt,
then he wears it everyday.”
Noelle, age 7

Parking Reminder!
Please remember that we are not allowed to park in the “Rite-Aid” parking lot at any time unless we are
shopping there. We want to respect and support our neighbors. Also, when you park in our lot, please pull in
tightly to make space for others. If necessary, you are allowed to double park, but be sure to remove your car
as soon as possible after the Worship Service. Thank you.
Although we now have a Security Guard on Sunday mornings, Security is still everyone’s re-sponsibility. Please help us maintain a safe environment here at Pilgrim by closing doors, turn-
ing off lights, and reporting any suspicious behavior. The back parking lot door is to remain
closed and locked at all times. Thank You.
Email Communication With Members
Members have reported they appreciate the Church Office sending out Event Reminders by email. This is
something we had planned to do long ago and it has now come to fruition. We hope to continue this type of
communication and for those who do not use email, the same notifications will continue to be in the Church
Bulletin and Newsletter. If you are not receiving these communications and would like to, submit your name
and email address to the Church Office and we will make sure you are included.

Pilgrim’s Newsletter Sponsors
Pilgrim's beautiful newsletter “Pilgrim’s Progress” is made possible by the advertising revenue from our generous
sponsors listed on the back of the newsletter. All the sponsors are local, many are our neighbors, and their sup-
port makes it possible for C&M Publications to print our newsletter at no expense to Pilgrim. Please make a spe-
cial effort to patronize our sponsors when the opportunity comes up for their services. And, let them know you
discovered them through their advertising in Pilgrim’s newsletter! Please take extra newsletters and use them as
an invitation to friends, family, neighbors...and everyone else!
. Planned Giving
Are there times when you’ve thought about making a charitable donation to Pilgrim but didn't know quite how to
go about it? Pick up a free “Planned Giving” brochure in the Narthex with explanations about various ways of giv-
ing, and “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good!” (Please see the many Stewardship brochures available in the Nar-
thex.)

Dr. Laura!
Laura Estergreen recently passed an intense examination to become a Doctoral Candidate at the University
of Southern California. Her field is so difficult that no one (except Laura) really understands the extent of it
all, but we are so happy for her and thankful to the Lord for answering our prayers. Many blessings Laura, as
you move forward!

Outside Facility Use Not Permitted
We occasionally receive requests to use our Gymnasium, Kitchen and Conference Room for non-church
related functions. Pilgrim’s Policy does not to allow the use of any part of our facility for outside use due to
liability and scheduling reasons. Thank you for understanding.
New Updated and Expanded “Member Handbook”
Pastor Kilian has updated Pilgrim’s Membership Handbook and it will soon be available for families to receive a
copy. Anita Olanic and Adam Smith have enhanced the handbook with beautiful photos and graphics. The
handbook features information on Pilgrim and also on the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. This handbook is
now also available on Pilgrim’s website.
Pilgrim Council Induction Ceremony on Sunday, January 22nd.
During the Worship Service, we will induct Pilgrim’s new Church Council Officers, Board Chairs and Elders.
This is a special time as we begin a new era in the Ministry of the Church. Please make a point to attend, and
keep these people in your regular prayers as they lead us in Ministry, here in this special place. You can also
help them by offering to volunteer on the Church Boards they lead.
Pilgrim’s New Year’s Resolutions
Regular Church Attendance: Although our Sunday Worship attendance has
remained fairly stable over the last decade, (averaging approximately 70 in a
service) most of our membership attends less than half of the time. Committing to
regular church attendance would encourage others to do so as well and would
bless both us and their families.
Bible Study/ Sunday School Attendance: This single commitment would
radically effect our Church! To be consistently in the Word of God would have a
rippling effect, for God’s Word is “Sharper than a two edged sword, and never goes out void.” Opportunities
on Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings, Thursday afternoons and quarterly “Discovery” seminars make it
easy and convenient to be in the Word here at Pilgrim. This is where the new revolution will take place and
how our Church will see growth inwardly and outwardly.
Fellowship Participation: Staying after Sunday Worship, attending a Soup Supper or other event, allows us
to build the bonds of membership and community here at Pilgrim. Of course we always have coffee and
refreshments but the real reason is to create unity in the Body of Christ. Set aside time to share yourself with
others, and choose to be a part, not apart.
Stewardship (Time, Talents and Treasure): It is true, the same group of people continue to do the bulk
of the volunteering and giving. They know the blessings of doing so, and the importance it carries for the
Kingdom of God. Will you consider joining them and knowing the blessings of giving for yourself? How can God
uniquely use your gifts here at Pilgrim?
Outreach: Statistically speaking, new people attend a Church not because of a Pastor or the building but
because someone invited them to come. We all have a Calling to the Great Commission to actively reach out
to others. Who will you invite to church?
THANK YOU AND MANY BLESSINGS IN 2017!
