From the East

From the East,

During conversations with brothers through the years I’ve noticed something that seems to be a common theme and also a major reason for people not attending lodge. It may not be what you think, we always hear that the lodges are getting older or they don’t do anything interesting. While those are real problems there is another concern that has come either by complacency and sometimes choice, it is the loss of the lodge character.

Lodges used to be grand places filled with history and tradition. There used to be rooms filled with artifacts from days gone by, elaborate furnishings and inspiring architecture. For the brothers that spent so many years and in some cases generations in the same lodge, it was regarded as a true second home. As career Masons we are not only brothers, we are family and the lodge becomes the place where the family gathers for good and on occasion, difficult times.

Walking into lodge has a special feeling for me, it is warm and welcoming, and as I pass the photos of Masters of the past that adorn our walls and the seemingly unending collection of symbols and art I feel like I’m part of something timeless. As our lodge has well over one hundred years of activity, there is much to explore and learn from.

Lodges aren’t just buildings or convenient structures where we meet, Masonic lodges are living history where tradition is passed down through words and deeds. Lodges are places where charitable actions are conceived, plans of action are refined and service rendered. Where we as citizens of our community come together in a common bond to do good to each other and those we encounter every day.

Unfortunately, lodges ultimately suffer the same wear and tear as we humans, eventually they deteriorate and the decision must be made how to keep these wonderful places in operation. All too often the buildings are sold for the value of the land and the members strike out to find a new home. Newer buildings just don’t have the grandeur and intricate architecture anymore. To hold lodge in a modern office space seems so lacking and disconnected from the rich warmth and traditions of times gone by. It is almost as if the ghosts of brethren past don’t warm the halls with the feelings of fraternal bond.

When brothers come to visit Harmonia lodge they often comment on how incredible our lodge is, how great the food is and how welcome they felt as they crossed the threshold. While I concede a Masonic lodge is far more than just a building, the atmosphere is set long before any visitor enters the front door.

By reputation, Freemasonry offers the intrigue to the interested visitor, the handshake by a member creates the welcome feeling, but the overwhelming reverence felt upon entering a well-appointed lodge room says, “I’m home.”

See you in lodge!

Fraternally,

Charley Hogwood, Worshipful Master

From the West

From the West,

Hello Brothers. Before we knew it, April snuck up on us. It’s hard to believe the season is almost over. The end of the season is getting closer but the Lodge attendance is still growing. New faces are coming into our Lodge each week. All of your time and support makes this all possible my Brothers.

First off, I want to congratulate our newly obligated Brothers who moved from darkness to light. It was an amazing and enjoyable night, and a privilege to watch them become initiated. The degree team did a great job and thank you to brother Mike Hart for his great lecture. Also, thank you to all the brothers who were present and showed their support. It is always a pleasure to see the members of Harmonia supporting their fellow brothers.

Secondly, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to the Brothers of the Lodge who have always and continue to support and help whenever a meeting is held. It makes everything easier and smoother and keeps things going. I look around and see how members and guests are appreciated and how everyone enjoys their nights with us. I feel proud and privileged to be one of you. I thank you all and let’s continue to bind ourselves together and lift each other up.

Mark your calendars for the following upcoming events:

-Bible and Apron ceremony for Bill Murray on Saturday, April 9th, 6:30 PM.

-Stated meeting- April 11th, HPM Edgar Mitchell Memorial service 6:30 PM.

-District 32 MM association picnic April 17th at Buttonwood Park, Lantana 12 – 4pm.

-Harmonia Table Lodge, April 21, 6:30 PM, MM only.

-Stated meeting- April 25th- Joint meeting with Bykota Lodge. We will be preparing a full BBQ dinner for the meal prior to the meeting including hamburgers, hotdogs, accompanied with sides and fixings.

Hope to see you all in Lodge!

Ricky Espiritu, Senior Warden

Off The Shelf of the Harmonia Library for April

Bro. David J. Reilly, Librarian

Lexicon of Freemasonry ~by Albert G. Mackey, M.D.

The Lexicon of Freemasonry is a book in our library that sheds light on the arcana of Freemasons from Abraxas to the Rite of Zinnendorf, giving readers a glimpse into the secrets of this centuries-old brotherhood. It also gives an account of the Myriad Rites, symbols, mysteries, and the traditions of Freemasonry.

Albert G. Mackey (1807-1881) is one of the 19th Century’s most prominent scholars of Freemasonry. His many books and materials include a multi- volume Encyclopedia of Freemasonry.
