Hi everyone,
Thank you to the members who attended the Taskforce AGM and to Greg Hendy for officiating the
election of office bearers. Appreciation to Kasey Shaw who due to other commitments has opted to
resign from her 2013/2014 role of Vice President. Congratulations to the 2014/2015 Executives:
welcome and thank you to Mel Elledge for accepting the role as Vice President and thanks also to Kylie
Luce and Pete Carnsew for staying on for another year as Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Last but
not least thank you to Mel & Pete for voting me back in for a fifth year.

Hello all, what fantastic weather winter is bringing us. Beautiful long sunny days, especially for the school
holidays. I would put a plug in that this will not last too much longer, before we know it, the wet will return
and with it the cyclone season. The cyclone season officially starts on 1 November. Lets get ourselves and
our households prepared. Check for tinned food, refill gas bottles, start the generator and replace old

I am also the Chair of the Cairns Local Disaster Management Group. I regularly post updates on
Emergency Management issues on my Facebook: Cr Steve Brain if you would like to friend me. In fact, I
regularly post Council events, decisions and actions on that facebook site. Please consider making a quick
visit to any of your neighbours who are elderly or have a disability. Elderly people are less likely to read
newspapers to find out what services are available and are also more likely to wait in silence for help.
With the change to the timings of the Babinda Taskforce, I will come to Babinda on Thursdays now. If you
would like to catch up with me, please call me on 0488148778 or send me an email on
[email protected]. Rachel will also know if I am around or not. But a friendly reminder, you do
not need to wait until a Thursday to call me.

Babinda School Centenary celebrations a credit to all involved
It was wonderful to attend the recent celebrations at the Babinda P-12 State School marking the school’s centenary (it was an enormous turnout considering the Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival and Cowboys v Broncos game were also on the same day). The atmosphere reflected the festivities and it was great to see so many people return to their old school to catch up with friends they hadn’t seen for many years to share stories, pictures, and memories about the place that has been such a formative part of their lives. One of the highlights was the Indigenous dancers who did a fantastic job showcasing the distinct cultures of Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The school’s motto is Strive to Excel and it was clear that the school does excel, the way people from throughout the Babinda community continue to stay involved in the school. P&C President Michele Dale remembered as a child the parents who were involved in her school and to see the impact the current P&C has in involving so many community members in helping all students reach their full potential was really encouraging. Congratulations to all involved in organising the celebrations, particularly Principal Matt Thompson, Paula Spokes, Ange Wilkins and all on the P&C. Babinda P-12 State School is a great school that continues to produce great young people, and continues to be one of the most important parts of the Babinda community. AROMATHERAPY--TIRED DRY FEET MASK This is a great recipe to experience at the end of a hard day or to experience while catching
up just relaxing with friends. Begin by soaking your feet in some warm salty water for 10
minutes great way to detoxify your feet. Honey and lemon Tea Tree are naturally
disinfectant, and can help to eliminate smelly, foot odour. Yellow Kaolin helps to draw out
dirt and purify the skin. Apricot Oil and Shea Butter are intensively moisturizing, which is
great for dry feet. This recipe is topped off with a drop of cooling and refreshing
Peppermint Oil.
Ingredients 1 teaspoon Apricot oil 1 teaspoon Honey
2 tablespoons Yellow Kaolin 1 teaspoon Shea Butter
1 drop Lemon Tea Tree Essential Oil 1 drop Peppermint Essential Oil
Directions-
1- Blend the above ingredients together in a clean glass jar and set aside.
2- Next place 1 tea cup of rock salt to 1cup of hot water in a bowl till dissolved. Top with
enough warm water to cover feet and soak, after 10 minutes dry feet.
3- Check for any skin sensitivity if ok after 5 min apply the foot mask evenly to your feet,
this mask should be used immediately it is not designed with storage in mind. If you have
too much for one application, share with a friend .This intensive mask should be applied to
clean feet, and then covered with linen cloth, bandage or clean cotton socks and wrapped in
glad wrap. The mask should be left on the feet for 15 minutes. Any residue should be
washed from the skin after the mask is finished. If you like, you can follow this treatment
with a body butter or lotion. Your feet will love you for this. For essential oils, appointments

Info Centre Illuminations The Babinda State School Centenary certainly drew a lot of ex residents back to the fold. Our Centre had many enquiring details of events. Some visitors opted to stay with friends or relatives, with others choosing to stay at local caravan parks. We have heard many reminiscences of life in “those days”. Quite delightful! Congratulations to all who worked so hard to make it happen. I think that is our lot for
centenaries this year.
A young Aussie couple travelling around Australia asked if it was OK for them to have their cat at Rotary Park. We often have visitors here with all varieties of dogs, but occasionally we do have visitors with
felines or birds that are perfectly happy to travel around with their people.
We recently had a group of 8 from Townsville who were intending to do the Mt Bartle Frere summit climb in one day. They were experienced walkers who had all the emergency equipment in case of accidents. They intended to leave at 5am. We don’t get that many visitors keen to do the climb, so it was with some surprise that another 2 German visitors intended to do the exact same climb on the same day – hope they
teamed up.

Resident evacuation & recovery register:
for residents of the Cairns Region who are elderly,
infirmed and/or disabled and have no transport or
friends or family in the area.
If an evacuation is required, those listed on the
register will be assisted by emergency service
personnel to evacuate their residence. In this event,
evacuees will be taken to a safe designated area.
Unfortunately emergency services will not have the
resources to assist with moving large quantities of
personal belongings or pets (except seeing-eye
dogs).
This register is updated annually. By placing your
name on the register, you are authorising Council to
give your details to any agencies that may be
involved in an evacuation.
If you answer yes to all of the following questions,
you may qualify for the register:

WALKING STEADY STEPS TO ACHIEVING
FANTASTIC RESULTS. We are now 12 months on from when we first commenced our walking group so
the MPHS team wanted to congratulate and promote the fantastic achievements
made by all our members that participate. All members have made improvements
in their strength, endurance whilst also reducing their falls risk and improving
their overall health with regular exercise.
This month we spoke to Alma Cole, to get her opinion on the Babinda Walking
Group. Alma has been a member of our walking group since we first commenced
and continues to attend regularly. Alma has made significant gains to all areas of
her health and function so was happy to share her story with us and encourage
other locals to join and enjoy the benefits. When Alma first commenced the
walking group she used a 4 wheeled walker and walked 1km, in the last few
months she has progressed to a walking stick and is now able to walk without any
walking aids 2km. Truly outstanding, Well done
Alma, what benefits have you noticed from walking regularly over the last 12
months?
My walking has improved, I can now walk a further distance without getting as
tired, and I also have less pain in my leg. Previously I used a 4 wheeled walker
but I no longer have to rely on this walking frame or my walking stick when I am
out and about as I can get around without them. I find it easier to get in and out of
my lounge chair and the car. I can walk around shopping centres much easier and
I have more energy to do things around the house and in the community.
What do you feel has contributed to your success?
Other participants are all very friendly and walking with a group of people
provides motivation and encouragement to continue attending. I enjoy seeing the
results and gains I have made, this also keeps me motivated.
And what do you enjoy most about the Babinda Walking Group
I enjoy the company and socialisation with the other group members and the benefits that I get from exercising
regularly. I also enjoy the company and support from the Multipurpose Health Service staff that walk with us.
What helpful advice can you give to other people in the community contemplating joining the walking group.
I encourage all of our valuable ageing local residents to attend. The group caters for all levels of walking ability and
it will benefit your health greatly.
If you would like to join our walking group and achieve great outcomes for your health, we highly encourage you to
attend. Our group meets every Monday, Wednesday & Friday at the front of the hospital at 7am. For enquires phone

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. Breast cancer is the name of
a disease that develops in breast tissue as a result of abnormal cells. This awareness month pro-
vides us an opportunity to focus on breast cancer and the impact it has on those affected by the
disease. The biggest known risk factor for developing breast cancer is simply being a woman
and getting older. 76% of women diagnosed are over 50. Although this is not only a womans
disease, men should be mindful that this disease targets about 1% of men. Get to know your body, breast
examination and visual assessment is a simple method of noticing changes to your breasts. Breast screen
Queensland is provided free for early detection of breast cancer via mammograms and is the most effective
proven method in reducing cancer morbidity.
If you suspect that something is abnormal, don't hesitate-do something about it and see your doctor.

decorations. The kids would love to get involved and
think of how much satisfaction you will get from
having your house hung with handmade garlands. And
what does this have to do with your library? Well, we

table displays and lots of other Christmas crafts. Just

around the sun for 24 hours a day, so they decided
to pull a 12 hour shift and call it a night.
Every time I start thinking too much about how I
look, I just find a Happy Hour and by the time I
leave I look just fine.

Happy 100th Birthday Neriade
(Ghiradelli) Bettini
A long time resident of the Babinda district is celebrating her 100th
Birthday this month. Neriade (Ghiradelli) Bettini was born on 24th
October 1914, at Halifax, near Ingham. The 5th child of 10 children,
Neriade has 4 older brothers all now deceased and 5 younger sisters,
two of whom are deceased. At the age of 5, with her parents and siblings
they moved to Italy. After living there for 5 years Neriade’s parents’
realized they could not stay under Mussolini’s rule so they returned to
Australia where her father purchased a cane farm at the end of what is
now Anderson Road, near Woree, Cairns.
She and her sisters attended Woree State School on Horseback. The School has long since been demolished
to make way for a Caravan Park and an Apartment Block. Her parents went on to buy various Properties in
Cairns.
On the 11th May 1933 Neriade married Angiolino Bettini. He had migrated to Australia in 1924. They lived
and raised their 4 Children, Laura Quabba, Vanda Ghidella, Ivan Bettini and Edna Pozzebon on their farm
in Bellenden Ker near Harvey Creek. After 56 years together sadly Angiolino Died on 6th April 1989, aged
86. Neriade stayed in her home on the farm till mid 2001, when after a series of heart attacks & heart
surgery she moved into Abbeyfield. Neriade was the 2nd person to take up residence in Abbeyfield, the first
being Anna Tsakissiris. Time took its toll physically and in July 2007, Neriade moved into Pyramid
Retirement Centre, Gordonvale, where she still resides very happily with most of her very large family
close by. At this point in time Neriade has 4 Children (1 Deceased), 13 Grandchildren, 31 Great Grand
Children and 11 Great Great Grand Children plus 1 due on her Birthday.
Neriade is the last of a group of long standing friends who all lived in and around Bellenden Ker. She has
witnessed many changes in our world over the past 100 years and is continually amazed by it all.

A Mother’s Letter to the World
Dear Worlds:
My son starts school today. It’s going to be strange and new to him for while. And I wish you would sort of treat him gently. You see, up to now, he’s been king of the roost. He’s been boss of the back yard. I have always been around
to repair his wounds, and to soothe his feelings. But now-things are going to be different.
This morning, he’s going to walk down the front steps, wave his hand and start on his great adventure that will probably include wars and tragedy and sorrow. To live his life in the world he has to live in will require faith and love
and courage.
So, World, I wish you would sort of take him by his young hand and teach him the things he will have to know. Teach him –but gently, if you can. Teach him that for every scoundrel there is a hero; that for every crooked politician there
us a dedicated leader; that for every enemy there is a friend. Teach him the wonders of books.
Give him quiet time to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on the green hill.
Teach him it is far more honourable to fail than to cheat.
Teach him to have faith in his own ideas, even if everyone else tells him they are wrong. Teach him to sell his brawn and brains to the highest bidder, but never to put price on his heart and soul. Teach him to close his ears to a
howling mob….and to stand and fight if he thinks he’s right.
Teach him gently, World, but don’t coddle him, because only the test of fire makes fine steel.
This is a big order, World, but see what you can do. He’s such a little fellow.

I’ve been around Babinda town since 1944
A lovely little town with things to do galore
Where everybody knows you and you know them as well
It’s just like one big family as everyone will tell
We get our share of cyclones not forgetting all the rain
This will cause some consternation sometimes a lot of pain
But give or take a day or two or maybe just a week
And things will be okay again living here’s not for the meek
I recall the time it was in its prime and the Babinda State Hotel
With the longest bar you’ve ever seen and the coldest beer as well
There was always entertainment with a punch up out the back
Or the cheer went up when a keg was lowered from the overhead rail track
But things have sadly changed now the cutters have all gone

Dear Lord, I am 80
Dear Lord, I am 80 and there’s much I haven’t done.
I hope dear Lord, you’ll let me live until I’m 81.
But, if I haven’t finished, all I want to do,
would you let me stay a while, unit I’m 82?
So many places I want to go, so much I want to see,
do you think you could manage to make it 83?
Many things I may have done, buts there’s so much left in store,
I’d like it very much, dear Lord, to live to 84.
And if by then, I’m still alive,
I think I’d like to stay until I’m 85.
The world is changing very fast, and nothing really sticks
but still I’d like to see the world, when l’m 86.
I know it’s a lot to ask, as I’m sure it’s nice in heaven,
but it would be so pleasant to be around at 87.
I will have seen so many things and had a lovely time,
So I’m sure that I’ll be willing then, to leave at 88.
(Well, maybe.)
By the time you’re eighty years old you’ve learned everything.
The only challenge is…..Being able to remember it!!
