It’s hard to believe that in two weeks it will be Christmas and 2015 will just about
be gone. When one starts to look back on 2015, they start to think about all the different
projects and over 1400 work orders that were completed by the crew this past year. The
amount of time that our crew of 7 puts in every year is amazing,14,560 hours a year we
work and that was done with no lost time due to accidents. We want to keep that record go-
ing into 2016. As for the central coping office, they will have done 4.8 million copies for
the school district in 2015, and that’s with two copiers that are six years old.
Meade School District has made some big improvement over the last three years,
and we hope to continue making improvement in 2016. With a school as large as ours,
there is always challenges and problems that will arise. The crew has done a gre4at job in
keeping everything running and also building new things to our district. Have a safe and
Merry Christmas from the Buildings &Grounds crew of Meade Schools District 46-1.

Re: December 2015 Meade 46-1 School Board Report From: Jeff Ward, Curriculum and Technology Director Subject: Rural Internet and Network Connectivity Through careful analysis of the existing frame relay system in place in 2007, it was determined that the district would benefit greatly by going to a point-to-point fiber connection between Whitewood, Piedmont and the Sturgis schools. This change would allow scalable increases for bandwidth usage as the District’s needs increased. This network allowed for remote access to computers and the ability for end users to access data stored on District servers. This option was not available for the remote schools throughout the rest of the District. In an effort to make the network resources available to the rural schools, a virtual private network (VPN) was implemented two years ago. The South Dakota Bureau of Information and Telecommunications (SD BIT) recommends the use of VPNs for schools that have remote locations. This VPN allows teachers in the rural the ability to access the media server which houses our audio books as well as allowing the techs to manage and provide support to devices in the rural over the VPN which would avoid having to drive to the rural school for many of the day to day technology issues. Golden West provides the digital subscriber line (DSL) at the rural schools that brings the Internet into the schools over copper phone lines, and they have done testing to make sure their equipment is set up and functioning correctly. SD BIT has set up and monitored the VPN and states that it is functional, and they have also stated that a fast Ethernet connection would help solve the problem. A further analysis of our network’s current content filter shows that traffic levels are at a level higher than the device is rated to handle. This could be contributing to the issues in the rural by causing the Internet connection to be slow or interrupted. Options at this point are to get a larger capacity content filter, find a provider of fast Ethernet to the rural schools and/or stop using the VPN.

To: Supt. Don Kirkegaard From: Ann Nonnast Subject: December Board Report Date: December 8, 2015 Sturgis Williams Middle School took the opportunity to educate our students about our military branches during the month of November. On the 10th, our students took a field trip to Fort Meade for the day. The students were divided into groups and assigned a platoon. Their platoon learned how to march and one student was appointed the platoon leader. Each of the platoons rotated through a variety of activities such as an obstacle coarse, MRE, strategic planning, and touring the museum. We continued our Veteran’s Day activities with a program on November 11th. We gave special recognition to the local Sturgis volunteer Honor Guard. The TAG group made a presentation on the history and duties of the Honor Guard. Cindy Ferguson, a paraprofessional at SWMS, was awarded the American Legion Educator of the Year award for her dedicated and positive efforts to our students in and out of school. Ms. Novak, the 6th grade science teacher, has created an exciting Exploratory class. During the six weeks in the class the students will take a variety of materials and create their own Ecosystem. The students will learn how things in our environment work together to create a balanced ecosystem. The November Character Trait of the Month was “Citizenship”. The Students of the Month for November were: 6th grade Devon DuBray, Jessica Matthew, Cora Burnett, Sidney Peterson and Sawyer Holzer. 7th grade Megan Petrocco, Hunter Rosten, Savannah Burton, Brody Brink, Dani Master, Grace Cooper, Jordan Kitzmiller, Payton Henderson and Jarrod Duran and 8th grade Courtney Hobbs, Lukas Weidmann, Mazie Hoffman, Abbey Steele, Avery Bunch, Ryan Conover and Kiara Brown. The staff at SWMS continues to focus on the implementation of the MacBook computers at in-service. We will be joining forces with the high school for the December In-service. We will begin with departmental meeting and presentations on implementation of the MacBook into instructional units. In the afternoon we will have a presentation on Drugs in our School and School Law. The choir students at SWMS kicked off their holiday season with their annual holiday concert on December 7th. The students did an outstanding job of capturing the holiday spirit. “Congrats!” Ann Nonnast Principal Sturgis Williams Middle School

RE: Board Report
December 2015
Wranglers of the Month from Whitewood for the month of November are as follows: Eric Schneller,
kindergarten; Ryan Hale, first grade; Ethan Graf, second grade; Virgil Brown, third grade; Sydney
Underhill, fourth grade; Aaron Werlinger, fifth grade; and, Dustin Alan, sixth grade.
Rural students of the month are as follows: Jaysee Jones, grade 5, Enning/Union Center and Beau
Austin, grade 8, Enning/Union Center.
The month of November’s character trait is citizenship. I am very proud of the efforts of the staff
and students to participate in activities which show their concern for the betterment of their com-
munity and country; activities which show their concern for staying informed about issues and to
voice their opinion as participant citizens; and activities which demonstrate their respect for those
who serve and have served our country.
All the schools are busy preparing for their Christmas programs. Those programs are such a great
way to practice the skills of speaking, listening, singing, performing, and acting. It is amusing as
to how stressful it is in the preparation stages and how wonderful the performances end of being.
We couldn’t do it without dedicated staff.
The students of Whitewood are to be commended for encouraging 19 adults to donate blood in a
community blood drive held on December 1 in Whitewood. They also collected canned food for the
Whitewood Food Pantry and donated money to go to the food panty.
The Enning/Union Center students used their money to purchase gifts and food which was given to
the Sturgis Kiwanis Food Pantry, the Toys for Tots program in Sturgis, and children at the Chil-
dren’s Home Society near Rockerville.

Merry Christmas!!
The Special Services office has been extremely busy gathering needed information for the mandated “Child Count.” The state requires all types of information on students who have disabilities. As of December 1, the total number of students that are on active Individual Education Plans (IEP) is 440. This is approximately 16% of the total enrollment; the highest it has been. For each student on an IEP as of December 1, money is allocated per their disability. The less severe disabilities generate $4,800 per student and the severest of disabling categories generate $21,210 per student. The special education numbers continue to increase as well as the intensity of services. As per the table below, the number of students with disabilities has grown and remains steady.
2007 Child Count 342
2008 Child Count 343
2009 Child Count 343
2010 Child Count 361
2011 Child Count 366
2012 Child Count 389
2013 Child Count 400
2014 Child Count 410
2015 Child Count 422
The special education teachers and their students at the middle school are embracing the tools the new Mac Airs laptops have available. The special education teachers are teaching their students how to access and use the text-to-speech and speech-to-text program. These simple options have motivated the middle school students to read at grade level and complete assignments by speaking into the laptop to reduce the frustration of written expression disabilities. Students are driven by technology! The new devices have helped the students accommodate their disabilities and ignite a new passion for learning! This is success! The Ronald McDonald Dental Care Mobile did over $26,000 worth of dental care on forty-three students while at the middle school, November 16-20. The dental care included fillings, extractions, sealants, x-rays and cleanings on all students seen. The care mobile has two complete dental offices on wheels. The staff included a dentist, dental assistants, dental hygienists and a registered nurse. The Dental Care Mobile will be in the Piedmont area again on February 8-12, 2015.
