EBONÉ M. LOCKETTM.S.ED.

It wasn't until she was 13 and published a book of poetry that Eboné Lockett even considered herself a "poet.” In collaboration with Trinity College, her middle school held a book publishing contest and her collection of poems won. Thus, with an adolescent affinity for alliteration, "The Classy Collection of Catastrophic Poems" was born!

“Another thing that was evident early on in life was that I was born with a "rebel-utionary" spirit,” she writes. I have always despised and taken a stand against injustice, and I learned- and continue to learn- the power of words during times of resistance. Marry the two revelations, and I have been writing and performing activism through poetry for the majority of my life.”

Winner of national awards, Eboné has performed solo and as a member of an ensemble with diverse groups and contributed to the national and international voice of poetry through WestChester University, Poetry by the Sea and a host of community engagements. She has written and performed multicultural, multi-lingual poetry with her students at both West Mecklenburg High School and CATO Middle College High School and believes that engaging in, and building, community is an essential outcome of the artistic expressions of performance poetry.

Eboné has also served as the Mecklenburg District Coordinator for Poetry Out Loud (a National Recitation Contest created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation) since 2007 and coached the 2010 NC State Champion to Nationals. This past summer she studied under the tutelage of current NC State Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton-Green during a writing retreat in Morocco. She currently teaches English at Cato Middle College High School, applying her pedagogy and love for literacy and learning to lead in the classroom, at her school and in her local, national and global communities.
