“School Bored

But isn’t it a fact

It’s the kids who get promoted

It’s the teachers who stay back.

A Prayer of Healing: Victims of Abuse

God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong

always present, always just;

You gave your only son to save us by his

Blood on the Cross.

Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace,

join to your own suffering

the pain of all who have been hurt

in body, mind, and spirit

by those who betrayed the trust

place in them.

Hear the cries of our brothers and sisters

who have been gravely harmed,

and the cries of those who love them.

Soothe their restless hearts with hope,

steady their shaken spirits with faith.

Grant them justice for their cause,

enlightened by your truth.

Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts,

heal your people’s wounds

and transform brokenness into wholeness.

Grant us the courage and wisdom,

humility and grace, to act with justice.

Breathe wisdom into our prayers and labors.

Grant that all harmed by abuse might find

peace in justice.

We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Pastor’s Post-It

Once again the heinous crime of the sexual abuse of children at the hands of clergy is back in the news. I thought we had turned that corner and were on the way to recovery. I was wrong. During the Watergate hearings over forty years ago, Senator Howard Baker framed the issue with three basic questions: “Who knew? What did they know? And when did they know it?” These same questions apply to the church’s handling or mishandling of child abuse by priests. Only now, with the recent report from the Attorney General of Pennsylvania and the allegations against Cardinal McCarrick, is the Church forced to deal with the matter of the cover up by the hierarchy. Until this point the hierarchy was mute in regard to the malfeasance of their own fellow bishops who reassigned pedophiles and failed to protect children. In the dark days of the Boston scandals in 2002 a group of laity came forward to raise their voices of outrage. Voice of the Faithful was formed at St. John Evangelist Parish in Wellesley, Massachusetts (next to my hometown). The founder was Dr. James Muller a Noble Laureate, professor at Harvard Medical School and distinguished member of the Vatican Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Rather than remain silent and docile in the face of the lies coming from Cardinal Law’s chancery, Dr. Muller and others decided to advocate on behalf of victims and the truth itself. Voice of the Faithful spread rapidly throughout the United States and abroad. My own late father founded a local chapter in the diocese of St. Petersburg, Florida. If you too are upset with the most recent scandals, do something constructive and positive. Check out VOTF.org as a possible way to be heard. The Church is the Body of Christ—bloodied and bruised right now but still beautiful and worth fighting for.

HOLY INNOCENTS SPEAKERS SERIES Presents:

“Pope Francis & the Politics of Polarization”

Sunday, September 9th at 7:30pm

in the Social Hall

Guest Speaker: Fr. Matt Malone, S.J.

Matt Malone, S.J., has been the President and Editor in Chief of America Magazine since 2012.

He entered the Society of Jesus in 2002 and was ordained a priest on June 9, 2012.

Prior to religious life, Fr. Malone served as special

assistant and speechwriter to Representative Martin T. Meehan (D-MA).

In remembrance of the tragedies of September 11, 2001, the lives that were lost, and for the loved ones they left behind who are still grieving every single day, we have chosen Let There Be Peace on Earth as our recessional hymn. This song was written by Jill Jackson Miller and her husband Sy Miller in 1955 for the International Children’s Choir of the Granger Dance Academy in Long Beach California. Jill and Sy worked with the children’s choir from 1955 to 1957 and the song continues to be the theme for this group of children who represent a host of nations. Jill Jackson's early life was filled with tragedy and self-doubt. She was an orphan at the age of three, and had a difficult journey into adulthood through foster care. Although she had moderate success as a film star, she tried to kill herself after her first marriage fell apart. Her unsuccessful suicide attempt led to a deep spiritual awakening, described in her own words: "And when I attempted suicide and I didn't succeed, I knew for the first time unconditional love--which God is. God is unconditional love. You are totally loved, totally accepted, just the way you are. In that moment I was not allowed to die, and something happened to me which is very difficult to explain. I had an eternal moment of truth, in which I knew I was loved, and knew I was here for a purpose." Jill realized the presence of a higher power in her life, and eventually came to write this song. The song has spread around the world because of its universal message of longing for personal and planetary peace. The Music Ministry hopes you will take a moment today to pray for peace in our world, and use this day as a reminder of how short life is, and that we should treasure each day with affection, tenderness, love and laughter.

OUR LADY OF POMPEII CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

Sunday, September 23, 2018

Mass at 10:00 a.m. Rosary Procession immediately following Mass

Food & Activities after Procession & Benediction

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Isaiah 35:4-7a Isaiah tells the people to be strong and unafraid. God will save his people, and the blind will see, the deaf will hear, and the lame will walk. Streams will come forth in the desert, the sandy ground will become springs of water. Second Reading: James 2:1-5 James encourages the people to never show favoritism. He discusses an usher who escorted a rich man to the best seat, while ignoring a poor man. God chose poor people to be rich in faith, so we should never judge people by their riches. Gospel: Mark 7:31-37 Some people brought a deaf man who could not speak to Jesus and begged him to lay his hand on the man. Jesus opened the man’s ears and cured his speech impediment. He ordered the people not to tell anyone, but they were too amazed to keep this to themselves.
