FROM THE PRESIDENTS Hello Everyone, Summer was a busy and productive time at HCS. Services were well attended and beautifully led by Cantor Ruth Ossher. There were also several Lay-Led services made possible with the sterling efforts of Cantor Ruth Ossher, Alan Most and Bob Fischer. Thanks to all participants as well. Lunch and Learn was generously sponsored all summer enhancing a wonderful social/educational HCS tradition. Please watch for a published list of Lunch and Learn dates still available for sponsorship in honor of a loved one, a special event, or just for fun! Thank you, Danielle Greenberg, for running interesting and informative Adult Education sessions at TURCO’S this summer. Many thanks to Bob Fischer for coordinating summer renovations and thanks too to our caretaker, Oscar, for his assistance. With our new awning, new front staircase masonry and paint our synagogue home has a fresh face for the High Holidays! As the High Holidays rapidly approach, we look forward to services led by Cantor Ruth Ossher this year. Special thanks to Alan Most, Irene Herz and all our volunteer readers and speakers who have been busy creating a meaningful holiday experience. The High Holiday schedule can be found online, posted on the lobby bulletin board and in a take-away stack on the round table in the lobby. Several other noteworthy events will be taking place this Fall. Hebrew School Opening Day is September 16. All are invited to the Opening Day Picnic. Our Hebrew School is growing under the expert guidance of Principal Jill Lifflander and Cantor Ruth Ossher who are leading the way with innovation and creativity. Our monthly Friday Pot Luck Dinners and Services, for instance, have been reworked going forward to begin with a Family Service at 6:30 followed by a dairy Pot Luck at 7:15 affording a greater

All HCS women are invited to attend meetings to learn how Sisterhood is the heart of HCS. Sisterhood is already actively planning terrific events such as an outing on September 30 at 9:00 A.M. at Harvest Moon Orchards, a clothing drive for the needy during September/October and the HCS 75th Anniversary Celebration to be held in Spring 2019. New faces, new ideas and energy are always welcome! Reminder: Thank you for your timely dues payments and upcoming High Holiday pledges. Both are very much appreciated and keep HCS running smoothly. Finally, and most sincerely, Co-Presidents Gloria Caldarella, Bob Fischer and I wish each and every one of you a healthy, peaceful and sweet New Year 5779! Shana Tovah! Shalom, Vicki Prusnofsky

The Ritual and Buildings & Grounds committees have been making final preparations for this year’s High Holiday services. Thank you to all of these hard working volunteers. Sisterhood is sponsoring a congregational break fast following the Neilah service on September 19th. Help with set-up and clean-up is appreciated. All are welcome. The Rabbi Search Committee is on hiatus for the High Holiday period and will resume in October or November. Hebrew School will begin on Sunday September 16th at 9:00am. This is also the date the first Sisterhood meeting of the new year. The meeting begins at 9:30 and will be followed by the Hebrew School Opening Picnic at 11am. From HCS Educational Director: Jill Liflander I am so excited for the Fall…all of it! The intense reflective times gathering

around Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, family meals, seeing everyone at

services, the beginning of the HCS Hebrew school year, and getting rolling

with the children, teachers and families! I am looking forward to a

wonderful, healthy, empowered and lively year with you all.

Much love, and L’Shana Tova! -Jill

A Very New York conversation:

a vignette from the C-town deli counter by Jill

We were standing by the deli counter, waiting. An older man with white hair, a beat-up tank top and khaki shorts ordered a baloney and American cheese sandwich on a roll, with "lots of mustard." I turned towards him and commented, "That sounds good."

“I’ve got a craving!” he shrugged. “I am into tuna. I’ve asked my family for a tuna sandwich to be my last meal.” My mind drifted to that perfect sandwich- toasted rye, Russian dressing, Swiss cheese, pickles… “Yuck. That’s my least favorite food ever!” he remarked, interrupting my reverie. “I don’t know. My brother thinks it’s weird, but I am so into whitefish salad and tuna salad. Old Jewish food.” “I didn’t know that Jewish people liked fish!” “I dunno! I always had lox and kippered salmon and whitefish with my grandparents and relatives on Sundays. I suppose it’s from Eastern Europe. It definitely reminds me of them.” “Do you like tuna melts?” he asked. Had we come upon common ground??? “Oh, I LOVE them” I replied hopefully…. greasy, buttery, open faced tuna… “Uch. I hate em!!!” he emphatically replied. We went on to talk more about the economics of baloney and of sandwiches in general, and as his order came up, I wished him a good afternoon. “Good Shabbos!” he smiled as he wheeled his cart away.
