Beware of Phone Fraud! For nearly three weeks now, there has been a man with a for-eign accent calling not only our house, but others here on theisland. These calls have started at 4 am and continuedthroughout the day and evening.

The caller says “This is Bell Mobility calling to say that be-cause you have been a loyal customer of Bell, we are able tooffer you this great deal for you at this time. A free cellphone!” Well.......I stop him at that point. I have called Bell onthis a few times and they have said they are NOT offering afree cell phone and they would NOT be calling people to dothis. It is fraud!

Bell Mobility suggests that, if you receive these calls, emailtheir “Fraud Prevention Team” at [email protected]. You can alsopunch in *57 after you hang up and before someone else callsin. *57 is a way to “trace the last number that has called yourline” even if they have blocked their phone number. The callerhas indeed blocked his number, because I have tried *69 a fewtimes and it couldn’t be done by that method.

On Bell’s advice, I did the *57 just after he hung up on meand the recording said the call trace has been done success-fully. What I had to do next was call the OPP so that theycould put a file to the traced call that was sent to them fromBell. By hitting *57 you do not get the information on thetraced call number, the OPP gets it.

You can set up a fraud file with the OPP first, so that whenthe call you want traced comes in, all you have to do is hit *57and when the OPP gets the information from Bell of a tracedcall they can add it to your file immediately. The OPP num-ber is 1-888-310-1122.

Please pass this information along to others so that no onewill be the victim of fraud.

Recipe ThanksPlease thank Lorraine Gourlie for the recipe. My grandmother used to make these andshe called it “matrimony cake.” I often wished I had the recipe and this brought backmemories of my childhood, watching her make them.

Thanks also for a great newspaper and the opportunity to read it on line. It makes meappreciate and miss Island life and look forward to being there again.

PC Doctorby George Skardis

QUESTION: My Christmas present this year was a new laptopcomputer. How will I be able to get the Internet while on vaca-tion?

ANSWER: There are three ways to connect to the Internet:dial-up, wired, or wireless. The slowest connection type is dial-up. Many new computers today do not have the phone jackand modem necessary for dial-up Internet. If you are stillusing dial-up Internet at home, check that new computercarefully. Look for a phone jack. No phone jack means nomodem available. Purchase and install either an internal or ex-ternal modem for use at home.

While away on vacation, hotels, motels, resorts, and camp-grounds provide high speed Internet. High speed Internetcomes in two flavours: wired, or wireless. A wired networkjack is always present on new laptops, towers, and all forms ofdesktop computers. A wired network jack is slightly wider thata phone jack. No, you cannot plug a phone line into a networkjack and expect to get the Internet. Do not stick foreign ob-jects into a network jack as this might damage the delicatecontacts. A few vacation spots continue to offer wired highspeed Internet as an alternative for travelers with older laptopcomputers. Do not forget to pack a length of network cablealong with your swim wear. Currently, the popularity of wire-less Internet connection has made wireless Internet a necessityin vacation spots and over-night accommodations. A word ofcaution: please, please, please practice connecting to a wirelessnetwork before embarking on your vacation.

Let’s run through a typical wireless Internet session. When vis-iting a location which you have confirmed offers wireless In-ternet, know the name and password for the wireless network.Desk clerks and resort staff will provide this information. Un-pack your laptop and set it up on a hard table surface. Softcushioned material will smother and cause laptops to over-heat. Check the lower right-hand corner of the computer’sdesktop, the system tray. A pop-up balloon will alert youwhenever a wireless network is available. Click on this notifi-cation to view all available wireless networks. Be sure to clickon the correct wireless network if multiple wireless networksare broadcasting within range. Click Connect. Type in a pass-word if required. Click check-boxes to indicate that this wire-less network is trusted, should be remembered, and shouldconnect automatically in the future. Never, ever disconnect anautomatic wireless connection. Just shut your computer offwhen finished.

Having trouble connecting? Go to Control Panel, System,Hardware, Device Manager. Look under Network devices. Doyou have a wireless adapter? Enable if disabled. Many laptopcomputer designs incorporate a wireless radio ON-OFFswitch. These tiny sliding switches or illuminated buttons areusually marked by a radio mast with radio wave halo. Is theradio switch turned ON? Return to the network notification inthe System Tray, Refresh, and Connect. Let’s go surfing now!
