11AORAKI POLYTECHNIC TRADES PROGRAMME INFORMATION

BUILDING SUCCESSSTUDENT PROFILE

Willie Murphy, Certificate in Ecological Building and Design (Introductory)

Mr Murphy, who holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from Lincoln University, has added an ecological focus to his qualification by completing Aoraki Polytechnic’s Certificate in Ecological Building and Design course, studying online. He is crediting his successful entry into the increasingly in-demand eco-landscape business to that.

In fact, he says, his introduction through Aoraki Polytechnic to the concepts of building sustainably and using materials and design principles related to the environment in a way that doesn’t harm the environment has given his new business the edge in the province over others in his field.

“Mr Murphy sees the Aoraki Polytechnic course as his springboard to business success.

“Aoraki staff Ann Fitzgerald and Jenny Rattenbury have designed and delivered this course around the concept of working with building architects and I will be expanding on that,” Mr Murphy said. “The focus for all architects is sustainability and I now have the edge now in this area. “The fast pace of the building industry today means that cheaper material options are often used. Cheaper does not always mean the best. By using local materials and local labour you can create a regional identity and a better environment.

“Building architects like to work with landscape architects who use that philosophy well. Aoraki Polytechnic has given me that edge.”

STUDENT PROFILE

Jose Valdes, Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4)

Jose Valdes, 38, often drove to his job in the Timaru District Council’s water department past two buildings on Aoraki Polytechnic’s campus that would ultimately change his life.

The two buildings were pre-fabricated houses being built by Certificate in Carpentry Level 4 students on the corner of North and Theodosia Street and Jose watched as young students started work on them from the ground up. He was envious.

Having reached a point in his working life where he was looking for a change, the trained automotive technician by trade and then water technician stopped off “for a yarn with one of the students” who suggested that he approach carpentry course coordinator Eion Miller.

“Eion was fantastic. He said that even though the course had started and there would be some catching up to do, I was welcome to join in.

“I had a look at my bank account and decided to make the career change,” Jose said.

“I found the course excellent. It was very comprehensive and touched on all aspects of carpentry. It wasn’t until I went out on eight weeks of work experience that I discovered just how relevant the programme was. It was good to feel up with the play.”Jose is now looking forward to his new life as a builder.

“It is great to be given such a good start and as a more mature student I found Aoraki Polytechnic welcoming and friendly.”
