“ NOW, LET’S LOOK AT ANOTHER
QUESTION 3 PROMPT
Palestinian American literary theorist and cultural critic Edward Said has
written that “Exile is strangely compelling to think about but terrible to
experience. It is the unhealable rift forced between a human being and
native place, between the self and its true home: its essential sadness can
never be surmounted.” Yet, Said has also said that exile can become a “a
potent, even enriching” experience.
Select a novel, play, or epic in which a character experiences such a rift and
becomes cut off from “home,” whether that home is the character’s
birthplace, family, homeland, or other special place. Then write an essay in
which you analyze how the character’s experience with exile is both
alienating and enriching, and how this experience illuminates the meaning
of the work as a whole. You may choose a work from the list below or one
of comparable literary merit. Do not merely summarize the plot.

OTHER TIPS
• Remember that essay #3 is all about theme.
You MUST discuss the meaning of the work
as a whole in this essay, or you can’t score
above a 5. Let’s look at a general rubric for
essay #3 now.
• MOWAW = meaning of the work as a
whole.
• Remember: this entire essay revolves around
showing HOW the author uses specific
instances, characters, situations, etc. to
demonstrate the theme you’re discussing.
• Theme is what your essay needs to focus on.
Tie each paragraph back to that central idea.
OTHER TIPS
•Whenever possible, mention the important
characters by name. Chances are, pivotal
characters are involved in delivering the book’s
theme and thus warrant mentioning.
•While you don’t want a lot of plot summary, you
should give enough details to bring your reader
up to speed on what’s happening in the book.
Provide enough explanation so you’re not just
dropping character names with no explanation.
•You can assume the reader has read the book,
but it’s also likely that he/she will appreciate a
quick reminder of the basic plot and/or
characters.
OTHER TIPS
•If you have written anything less than two pages,
you need to write more. Use the entire 40
minutes.
•Organize your writing. A safe bet would be one
paragraph for each part of the prompt.
•Be specific. Use as much specific support as
possible to PROVE what you’re writing.
•Book titles are underlined.
•No personal pronouns (I, we, you)
•Your handwriting needs to be legible.
•Write a theme statement thesis and focus your
entire essay around proving that thesis.
•Write in present tense. ALWAYS!
