1. Finish discussing the AP sample set from Friday: applying meter.
2. The Victorian Era: to better explore Jane Eyre, we need to understand a bit about the Victorian Era. To do this, we’ll complete the following:-Victorian art viewing and discussion.-Non-fiction reading selection (Thomas Carlyle’s Past and Present).
Viewing Activity:
Each of the following paintings was selected because it represents a characteristic of the Victorian Era.
For each painting, record your initial observations just as though you were performing textual analysis: What is the dramatic situation of the painting? The setting? The tone? The subject?
The Fighting “Temeraire” – J.M.W. Turner
Dickens’ Characters – William H. Beard
The Questioner of the Sphinx – Elihu Vedder
Jonah at Sea – Albert P. Ryder
Thomas Carlyle’s Past and Present:
Non-fictionOne of Victorian Era’s most prolific treatise.
As you read, you should mark the text. Be prepared for tomorrow’s discussion on the Carlyle’s argument and on the Victorian Era as a whole.
