For several decades now, WE-EF has been a trusted manufacturer
of high-performance exterior luminaires, combining state-of-the-art
lamp and control technology with advanced optical systems and
sound mechanical engineering. In our rapidly changing industry,
tungsten halogen and 'old generation' discharge lamps have mean-
while been superseded by modern light sources such as ceramic
metal halide and LEDs – both of which can be found in luminaires
featured in this catalogue – offering distinct advantages in their
respective fields of application.

Light-emitting diodes have now been available as a new source of light for about a
decade. LED technology offers a broad range of benefits, the most significant being that
it offers massive potential for energy savings. Additional opportunities for protecting the
climate and environment result from other properties such as, for example, a long service
life, excellent control potential, and small size and flexibility. These strengths have made
LEDs a popular replacement for conventional lighting technologies. Their technology-
based advantages are ideal for exterior lighting applications.
WE-EF is numbered among the pioneers of LED applications and, with its extensive
knowledge and experience has brought technological developments to market maturity
that have resulted in particularly efficient lighting solutions. Inventions such as the
OLC® One LED Concept or RFC™ Reflection Free Contour technologies demonstrate the
level of innovation at WE-EF. The desire to always be one step ahead of the state-of-the-
art combined with a reliable sense for current technological trends and quality of design
has resulted in great strides being made – to the benefit of both users of luminaires and
the environment.

Design and Engineering
The most important element in the design process is the development of luminaires that
encompass timeless design; in other words, design that best reflects their enduring
qualities.
In addition, state-of-the-art engineering brings with it the highest standards with regard
to environmentally-friendly materials and processes, i.e., high IP ratings, excellent ther-
mal management and innovative optical systems. The development of high-end, efficient
reflectors and lenses is one of the core competencies of WE-EF. This means compliance
with international lighting and safety norms, while meeting the criteria of such organi-
sations as the Dark Sky Society. Continual investment in research and development is
the basic condition for meeting these requirements. WE-EF innovations, such as
IOS® Innovative Optical Systems, CTA® Cool Touch Adaptor, ASC® Anti Slip Coating and
OLC® One LED Concept, are just some examples of the company’s continuing investment
in technology.

Production
'Made by WE-EF' is more than just an expression; the high quality level of in-house
production processes includes:

Through continual investment in tooling and production processes, and ongoing training
programmes for WE-EF employees, the highest standards of quality are achieved. In
exterior lighting, the corrosion-resistance qualities of a product are crucial to their relia-
bility and longevity. Durable and reliable corrosion protection can only be achieved when
product development and production processes are considered together. Years of
research, development and practical testing as well as experience in some of the most
extreme climates on Earth have resulted in WE-EF’s unique 5CE corrosion protection sys-
tem. This system encompasses five critical elements:
n Substrate
n Conversion coating
n Powdercoating
n PCS hardware (polymer coated stainless steel)
n Process control
Application
Real and sustainable cost and energy savings can only be achieved through professional
project planning, including the application of the latest optical systems and light sources.
In streetlighting applications, for example, this means minimising the number of lumi-
naires required by optimising the efficiency of the optical system, while at the same time
limiting glare in line with international standards. In short, reduced installation and
maintenance costs, less CO2 and improved quality of light.
Recycling
More than 90 per cent of a WE-EF luminaire can be recycled. The main component, a
marine-grade aluminium substrate, is refined from recycled aluminium. This recycled
aluminium is also an 'energy storer'. Only five per cent of the original energy needed to
process bauxite into aluminium is required for recycling. In other words, 95 per cent
of the original energy input is also recycled.
The most signi� cant WE-EF contribution to protecting the environment is the creation
of products that are engineered to endure, essentially minimising the need to replace
or recycle them for many years.

There are three key players in any lighting project: the lighting designer who uses creativity
and technical knowledge to conceive lighting solutions, the luminaire manufacturer who produces
the tools needed by the lighting designer, and the object to be illuminated.
