AP® Spanish Language and Culture
Course OverviewThe AP® Spanish Language and Culture course is conducted completely in Spanish. Weencourage all students throughout their Spanish studies to practice the targetlanguage consistently with their teachers and peers. They should be able to usethe Spanish language to:
Read authentic materials and do applied research of subjects that either directly influence, or are directly influenced by the cultural factor (to include geography, sociology, anthropology, history, and other related content areas).
Express themselves orally by convincing, arguing, inquiring, and describing. Evaluate and analyze authentic written, audio, and visual artifacts Understand conversations, lectures, oral presentations, newspapers,
letters, instructions, Internet articles, and short stories. Express themselves well in a variety of styles, using different strategies for
different audiences.
Course OutlineTo teach the AP Spanish Language and Culture course, our school will use Temas (Vista Higher Learning Inc.), AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam Preparation (Vista Higher Learning Inc.), with supplementary materials Nuevas Vistas I & II (Holt, Rinehart, Winston). Additionally, we will use AMSCO 3rd Year for grammar practice, and AP Spanish Preparing for the Language and Culture Examination, Fourth Edition Pearson Prentice Hall, 2014.Students will also use the internet, Spanish newspapers, radio and television programs, and live interviews and presentations to ensure authentic exposure.
The course will be taught in Spanish and students will have extensive practice with listening, speaking, reading, writing and cultural exercises. Weekly comprehensive quizzes will be given to assess growth in all areas through contextualized readings as well as grammar quizzes to reinforce the mechanics of the language. Students will also complete weekly essays concerning the cultural component of the language. Every unit/chapter will include a comprehensive assessment/exam, and every 9 weeks students will review their classroom portfolio. Classroom portfolios will have a self reflection as well as be subject to peer editing. All classroom portfolios will contain materials that can be added into the students’ senior or graduation portfolios.
