The Trans Canada Trail has a vision to be completed by 2017. In Pictou County, Sally has been working with NS Trails’ TCT Consultant, Garnet McLaughlin, and local trail groups to create a TCT route that will connect our towns, rural communies and First Naon’s lands. Approximately $945,135.00 has been reserved for Pictou County. This is 50% of the esmated total project cost. Therefore, having a Trail Development Coordinator is essenal to secure funding from numerous sources, including in-kind, community, corporate and government partnerships in order to make the construcon of the trail a reality . Thanks to funding from DHW, a total

of 160 hours of free unstructured

activity was provided for families in

Pictou County at local arenas and

pools from November 2013 to

March 2014.

Arenas: Estimated attendance = 6000

Swims: Estimated attendance = 2580

Funding has been approved for 2014-

15 and planning is underway to

expand to include access to

snowshoes, community use of school

gyms and more promotion of

equipment loan programs & swaps.

Memorandum of Understanding signed with the province to confirm participation until 2018 in the MPAL Program

Securing funding from NS Moves to install bike lanes/route between downtown New Glasgow & Trenton Park

Sharing information on recreation and physical activity opportunities to residents using social media, radio and stories in local papers and presentations

Supporting the work of New Glasgow Academy to construct a natural play space

Representing Pictou County on provincial level on the UNSM Active Transportation Committee, Recreation Nova Scotia board, and as planning member for Physical Activity Practitioner Exchange

Supporting leadership development programs such as High Five, Fundamental Movement Skills , and an Instructor Courses.

Partnering with Dept of Community Services and NSCC to host student placements & provide employment experience to youth in our community

Building relationships with Let Abilities Work, Northern Region Respite, CCRSB and PC Autism Support Group to improve municipal services for residents with disabilities

HIGHLIGHTS 2013-14

Fifteen 8-week sessions offered throughout the year at

various locations across Pictou Co, including: North End

Recreation Center, Thorburn Consolidated, Brown Street

School, East Pictou School, YMCA, Stellarton Youth Centre,

Pictou Youth Centre, Westville Municipal Building and Pictou

Elementary School

Five program staff hired to lead activities at each site

Partnerships with local organizations who were already

offering after school program to assist them in improving and

increase attendance (i.e. Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Roots for

Youth, Dr’s NS Youth Run Clubs)

Coordination of special event day for all students

participating in special education programs throughout the

Celtic Family at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. Students

and support staff participated in a variety of activities and

adapted programs/services were showcased.

Completion of the on-line course “Movement to Inclusion”

Participated in evaluation study led by Dalhousie University

on the process of establishing community-based after school

programs

Development of positive working relationships with

administration and staff at local schools. Increasing the

visibility of Active Pictou County as a resource.

Creation of a calendar on www.activepictoucounty.ca that

highlights all FREE after school activities in Pictou County

After School Time Period Funding from Dept of Ed is now considered CORE funding.

Great foundation on which we can build a stronger

after school program across the county.

Increase promotion of after school programs by improving the

content on www.activepictoucounty.ca

Improve the quality of programs by coordinating training

events for staff working in after school programs across Pictou

Co.

Continue to identify and address gaps in after school program

delivery in rural areas and among inactive groups (i.e. youth

with disabilities)

Increase funding sources for After School Time Period Project

(municipal investments, grants, foundations, etc..)
