In Iraq the world’s most fragile country, we seek out local peace builders who are making a real difference – building peace from the grassroots up, preventing conflict in the places where it starts – locally.

We believe that local people have the power to find their own solutions to conflict – and to build their own better futures. APHRO task is to help them make this happen.

Human Rights are the very foundation of a society that guarantees equality, dignity and freedom for each human being. APHRO, through its legitimacy, its experience, its methods and its credibility, has a unique role to play in contributing to their realisation.

APHRO is an NGO defending all civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It acts in the legal and political field for the creation and reinforcement of international instruments for the protection of Human Rights and for their implementation inside Iraqi community.

1. An ethic: Independence and Objectivity

APHRO is a non-partisan, non-religious, non-political and non-profit organisation, and it is based in Erbil. Its independence and objectivity are the very foundation of its credibility.

2. An organization to serve its members

APHRO is a civil society organization that acts through and for its national member and partner organisations. This principle of independency and non-governmental shapes its decision-making processes, its mode of action and the way it operates. It is what makes APHRO truly representative of its member and gives it legitimacy. By remaining in permanent interaction with local civil societies, APHRO can rapidly identify local obstacles to the work of defenders and take the necessary steps to mobilise support for them.

APHRO does not represent either party to the conflict, it draws on the trust and relationships built by its members to gain insights into the Iraqi complicated perspective that are not available to those outside the Iraqi Civil Society.  By combining intellectual rigour with a sound practical understanding of ground realities (APHRO) seeks to increase the quality of interaction between the parties to the conflict, civil society groups both Kurdistan Region and in the rest Iraqi many aspects communities, and with the international community.

(APHRO) strives to provide a forum to channel diverse opinions and facilitate the formation of political opinions amongst all those who have an interest in resolving the conflict. By conducting primary research, publishing reports, carrying out analysis and organising conferences, workshops and seminars, (APHRO) contributes to the conflict resolution discourse on Iraq.

Our vision is to connect people and organizations that are willing to step forward, co-create solutions and take action in creating Cultures of Peace and greater well-being. This will be accomplished by integrating personal, professional and global initiatives and by recognizing shared principles and proven daily practices.
