From the President
Dear APIBA Members,
I feel most honoured to have been elected
APIBA´s new president. Our dear
Association has always been part of my
personal and professional life. Back in 1989,
as a very young graduate teacher, I became
a Committee member and acted as
Treasurer for a two-year term. In those
days, Jorge Ghenadenik was President and
our dear friend and colleague Daniel Reznik
- forever in our hearts - was Secretary. Now
Jorge, who retired last May after more than
40 years as a distinguished teacher trainer, has kindly agreed to join APIBA once again,
22 years after. As for me, I joined APIBA´s Executive Committee for a second time at the
end of 2005 and acted as Treasurer once again till October 2011. It feels like I’ve never
left, just like home.
Before the end of this very eventful year, in which APIBA hosted the successful FAAPI
2013 Conference, I would like to express my immense gratitude to the outgoing
president, Analía Kandel, who did such an outstanding job during her four years as
president. APIBA is not the same after her incredible work towards the modernization of
our dear Association and its expansion in terms of membership and visibility in the virtual
world. And FAAPI 2013 was the icing on the cake, no doubt! Great job, dear Analía, and
the rest of the Committee: Corine Arguimbau, Belen Tur, Cecilia Cicolini, Laura Karina
López, Mariángeles Portilla, Laura Renart, Valeria Kharsansky and Laureana Moreno.
I wish you all the best for this NEW YEAR which is just about to start. Let’s take a well-
deserved rest and meet again in February, with renewed energy and lots of ideas to put
into practice. Your feedback and suggestions are most welcome.

Annual General Meeting: 30 Nov 2013
On 30 November 2013 APIBA held its Annual General Meeting, where the Executive Committee presented an exhaustive account of the year’s activities and finances. See Memoria 2013

End-of-Year Toast
At the End-of-Year toast we all raised our glasses to this year’s achievements and to a very happy and successful 2014 for APIBA. Viviana Myslicki dedicated a beautiful and heart-felt song to Analía Kandel as a token for the years they shared in APIBA.
Historian Dr. Raymond Day made a presentation of the APIBA History reedition (see below). APIBA is grateful to Ray Day for his generous and disinterested pro bono work in support of our Association’s mission.

Preface to the Second Edition
In 2001 APIBA commissioned me to write a history to commemorate their thirtieth
anniversary. In 2011, after another decade of determined activity in the face of complicated historical and social circumstances in Argentina, I was asked to do an update of the history for the fortieth anniversary. This update, like the original history, aims similarly to describe APIBA’s work and achievements in the last decade, and provide some critical appraisal of how the association met the challenges it was facing in 2001. Also, as in the original, it is intended as a basis for further discussion about the association’s future role.
As in the first edition, significant space has been allotted to the reflections of former presidents, in this instance, Cristina Banfi, Sandra Revale, Stella Schulte,
and Analía Kandel (the incumbent at the time of writing). APIBA presidents, past and present, offer a fascinating insight into the identity of the association, because they are themselves, generally among the most dedicated and long serving members. As there are no earnings, little power, and not much prestige involved in the job of APIBA president, those who take it on generally do so as a duty rather than a reward, based on perception of civic obligation rather than professional ambition. Unsurprisingly, they come from the same core membership that has perpetuated the association through the upheavals of forty years of Argentine history.
Times have changed and this edition comes out on the internet rather than in print. This, in itself, is indicative of the new historical context in which APIBA now finds itself. There has been a digital revolution in the last decade and APIBA has moved on from workshops and newsletters to tweets, blogs, and webinars. It has taken advantage of new technologies to increase ‘its visibility’ in the words of the current president. But innovation in communication media has been part of a broader trend in the last decade that can generally be summed-up as a sustained effort to reach out to the young. This theme is pervasive in the account that follows.

ELT Journal Editor, Graham Hall, and a group of Argentinian authors will
share their experiences in March 2014. As English language teachers, we
constantly encounter ideas and suggestions about how we might teach. We are
often encouraged to 'engage with theory' and to share good practice as part of
our professional development. One way of doing this is by reading and writing
for publication in "academic" journals. In this workshop, we will examine why
you might want to get published in an "academic," peer-reviewed journal, and
how to go about it.
