"" Have, for the benefit of fuch as delire to learn on the Fiolin^zn^ may li'sje in the CountryI far from any profefled Teachers, fet downthefe brief Inftrudions.
M Firft, It is ufual for the Praditioners to learn on the Trebk-p^iolin by Ear; ( but few there arc
Ml that do fo, that ever attain totriie Stopping in Tune at firft: Therefore, for a raorfc true andipeedy way of learning to ftop all Notes in Tune , I have here fet down a Rule by Letters on four
JLines aifigned to the four feveral Strings, by Frets and Stops on the Neck of the Fiolin^ which is away I have known ufcd by the beft Teachers in and about London^ as a moft fure and ealle way for thefirft entring their Scholars j and after, to ciit them off when they became perfed in the knowledge ofall the feveral Notes, and their true flopping in Tune. Note, That from the firft Fret to thefecond,is a Semitone or Half-Note ; but from the firft to the third, is a whole Tone or perfed Note ; and fois the third to the fifth.
For accomplifhing of which, procure him of whom yoy buy your Fiolin, or forae other Artift, to tie
five Frets on the Neck of your FioZ/V?, as is on the Neck of a l^iol or Lpite, at a true diftance. YourViaRii being thus fretted, it will be proper next to underftand the way of Tuning it, which is by Fif:hs,
that is, five Ndtes, each String higher than the other. For the better underftanding of which, this
Exartiple hath the Letters upon the four Lines, alluding to the four Strings of the Vklin, viz., That J^;is the firft Fret, _£. the fecond,^ the third, &c. .^ is the String open, that is, the String unftopp'd.

Thus in the following E}cample, which is a Tune,as the Letters are varioudy placed on the four Lines,
foBie upon one Line, and f9rae upon another ;, fo they are to be ftopt on the feveral S trin^s,according to
their
their places when lingle : It begins with three X's alone on the feeond Fret of the Treble or higheft

Letter is .d.> w hich is the String ftruck open ; the fifth is JL again, as before ; the fixth is _£. upon the
feeond String, ftopt on the fifth Fret ,and fo forward. The fame Tunc being placed under it in Notes,
according to the Gam-ut.

Of Tuning the F10 LIN.Next, for the Tuning your Violin^ there be two ways ; firft, by Fifths, which is moft ufual, and is
Tuned, the Strings open j feeond by Eighths, which is, by ftopping the fifth Fret, which is
F, viz.. Firft, to wind up the Treble as high as it will bear without breaking, found it with yourBow to the feeond, and you will hear it an Eighth to the Treble \ which done, ftop your feeond in
like manner in i., and tunc your Third to that i and laft, ftop your Third in JL-, and tune yourFourth to that : When thus tuned, if you ftrike your Treble and Second together without. ftopping,
you will find it a Fifth, and fo the reft to be Fifths to each other. By this Rule, your four Strings will
be in Tune, and you may proceed to play thofe Tunes foregoing. /
