APOSTLE
PRESBYTERIAN
CHURCH

Apostle
Welcomes you
“For inquire now of bygone generations, and consider what
their ancestors have found; for we are but of yesterday, and
we know nothing, for our days on earth are but a shadow.
Will they not teach you and tell you and utter words out of
their understanding” Job 8: 8-10
This is always an exciting time of year for me—I LOVE having folks
back in church after they have been away for the summer. I love the new
programming year; Sunday School back in full swing; WOW ready to
begin with an exciting PRE WOW program on September 25! The 3
Score and Ten Dinner –Senior Moments—and of course all kinds of other
events that come with this fall season. I love it ALL.
I am doing a sermon series based on the recently released Mission
Study of Apostle. Yesterday I used the scripture I quote above (found on
page 4 of the mission study, OUR HISTORY). Many have asked me to
sum up my sermon in the newsletter so here it is!
Job had 3 friends who came to him during the worst time of his life.
These friends ASSUMED they knew what Job had done wrong and what
he needed to do to get back into the righteousness of God. They couldn’t
have been any more off target if they tried NOR could they have been
worse friends!! So where are the false assumptions that you have made?
Where do you see that Apostle has made false assumptions in the past?
How can we build a healthy future without using these false assumptions
that might still be lingering?
I am blessed to spend some time out in the community and I think I have
seen where ONE of our false assumptions might be. I hear from many in
our congregation that “no one wants to go to church” but that is a false
assumption. I hear young moms wanting to find a place where life can
slow down for them a bit—I hear young men asking RICH questions
about life that could certainly be kicked around at church a bit—I hear
older folks who are frightened in the big world, feeling alone and they
certainly could be part of a church who would minister to them in a lov-
ing, life affirming way. What stops these folks from just FLOCKING IN?
We do. We don’t invite folks in (and if you want to talk about HOW to
invite folks to church, I have just taken a course on that—would love to
share!!) We don’t talk about our faith in terms that folks can hear.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE CONTINUED
We DO talk about the “work” that we need to do to keep the church going and we use tones of
voice that indicate that “work” is pure drudgery and hell. Who would want to come then?
I am spending this week looking at the false assumptions I have made. I hope you too can take
some time to reflect. And what better way to get to know someone than to ask a clarifying ques-
tion?
God makes a way for each of us to be in relationship if we only see the opportunity. Indeed we
serve a God who longs to be in relationship with us. Why not start a conversation with someone
who doesn’t come to church and invite them in to learn to play drums with us on September 25. I
ASSUME everyone will want to do that!!
In Gratitude
Cathy
PLEASE BEWARE OF THIS INFORMATION!
In an attempt to make certain medications don’t end up in the wrong hands the
West Allis Police Department is sponsoring Drug Take Back Day on Saturday Octo-ber 26 from 10 AM to 2 PM. If you have medications that you are no longer taking but have some left in your home, take them to the police department at 11301 W. Lincoln Avenue. They work with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to destroy these medications. Last year West Allis collected almost 700 pounds of medications to be de-stroyed. This is a great way to help keep our kids safe from drugs!!!
Apostle will celebrate TRICK OR TREAT at WOW on Wednesday
October 30. If you would like to have a “household” represented, please contact
Cathy so she can make appropriate arrangements. Then all you need to do is
COME to WOW and be ready to hand out treats to our kids from your
“household”!! It is as easy as that!! Showing God’s love in different ways
is INDEED what we are about. Questions? Contact Cathy at crecathy-
[email protected] Or call her in the church office.

Friends:
Have you heard the news? THE STAGE ( see the picture) and THE THEATRE have both been CLEANED
and are ready for use. We are very excited to be able to use these two amazing areas of our church to enhance
ministry!!
HOWEVER we need your help!!! Many areas of our building have become, for lack of better wording, a
dumping ground. I have had MANY people come to me complaining that someone has taken something to use
and then rather than RETURN IT TO WHERE THEY HAD FOUND IT, they leave it wherever they feel they
want!! This is not going to continue. If you take something to use, please return it to the exact place where
you found it. Please do NOT leave things wherever you please. We are working very hard to get our building
cleaned up and presentable. It is more than discouraging to turn around and find someone has left things in the
newly cleaned space--and things that clearly belong in the trash OR need to be put back where they were taken
from. We need your help to make this a place where ministry can be done well.
As always if you have questions or comments, I welcome them!!!
Cathy
PS Please join me in thanking the following for helping this clean up effort-- Joyce LaConte, Theresa
LaMott, Brenda and Mark Thomas, Gail Rogers, Adelle Sanford, and Judy Puschnig. These folks deserve
a huge round a applause for all of the hard work they have put in!!!!
MUSIC NOTES
CHURCH MUSIC IS STILL CHANGING
Last Sunday I introduced a new hymn by singing it during the offertory. The song was “In Christ Alone” and is
probably the most popular of the “new” hymns in our churches. It was introduced and will be used the next two
weeks in our Sunday service. This hymn reflects a time of change in an interesting way toward a new music skill;
the writing of contemporary hymns. We have seen about thirty years of the “praise song” as part of our service
liturgy. These songs were basically written to stir an audience’s emotion toward a positive worship experience and
many times would be a repetitive phrase that signaled a building reverence and spirit in the worshipper.
Many times they are led by a worship leader whose voice was carefully crafted to sound beautiful and profession-
al. Many times, also, the participation of the audience was just to follow along, sometimes with difficulty, as the
musical lines grew more complex rhythmically and note range.
With the advent of new hymn writers Keith and Krystyn Getty, the search for more meaningful hymns has begun.
“In Christ Alone” is one of the new hymns now used in worship. Rev. Jeremy Rose writes: “Many new songs used
in worship focus on how worshippers feel about God but doesn’t contain much theology. Older hymns often have
good theology but lack a personal touch. “In Christ Alone” has both.
This hymn takes theology and attaches it to my day-in and day-out life and practice. It has such depth and truth put
to music. “ Similar to “Amazing Grace” and “Be Thou My Vision” the song makes people want to sing along.
It is my hope that our congregation will enjoy being introduced to some of the new hymns by the Gettys, Stuart
Townsend and Rueben Morgan and others and the words and music will enhance your faith and your worship ex-
perience.
Blessings,
Carl

take part! The Greater Milwaukee CROP Hunger Walk raises funds for global and local disaster

collects food for Hunger Task Force which is distributed to food pantries and meal programs
throughout the Milwaukee area. Starting September 22nd you can place your food items in the Mis-
sion Basket at the rear of the Sanctuary anytime before October 13th. Let’s all contribute and help

The Family Resource Center located in the lower level of the Christian Education
Building, is now open for the new school year. However, the days have changed.
They are now open only on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00 am to 12:00
noon. Funding has become an issue and the financial resources are not available at
this time to keep it open the four days it had previously been open.
The Resource staff is trying to get this new information out to the families to save
them a trip here when it is not open. Should any Apostle member be in the
building on days that the center is not open ( Tuesday, Wednesday or Fri-
day), please be aware that families are not allowed the use of the resource
room without a resource teacher present.
If any resource family member or church member has any questions regarding this
policy, please contact the church office at 414-476-2043.

TThank you for all the prayers, love and concern that you have shown us during my mother’s
illness and death. They have been of great comfort to us and we appreciate all that you have
done. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful church family, especially when our families
are so far away. We were blessed to have her with us almost 82 years and now she is celebrating
her eternal life in heaven.
Mark and Brenda Thomas and family
I I wish to thank my church family for all the thoughtful sympathy cards, prayers and phone
calls that I and my family received when my very dear son-in-law Wally died unexpectedly. It is
very comforting to know that so many extend their support at a time like this. Once again,
thank you all and may God Bless You.
Joyce LaConte and The Walter Wrobbel Family
TThank you for the loving cards, flowers from church, phone calls and visits. Special visits
from Cathy and Heidi and the Deacons. Thank you especially for the many prayers from my
Apostle family. I am improving each day in rehab.
With Love,
Ginny Treviranus and family
Thank YOU!
Apostle’s caring and supportive family has truly blessed us in so many ways! We are immensely
grateful for all the acts of kindness we’ve experienced during Mike’s neck surgeries and serious
infection. “Thank you” seems so trite however it comes from our hearts. Your continued prayers
are appreciated.

AAs many of you know our BUNN coffee maker is no longer working. This machine gets plen-
ty of use and would have been a big loss. Then came the Apostle Pals who said, “why don’t you
use the money we collect from the aluminum cans to pay for a new coffee maker”. Well this was
a wonderful gesture on their part and it saved the church from having to go without this coffee
maker. The coffee maker cost several hundred dollars and it cost almost another two hundred
dollars to have the wiring that was needed, changed. Thank you to the Apostle Pals for the work
they do in collecting and transporting those cans. Their work was not in vain and their generosi-
ty was very much appreciated.
PS: To all Apostle members who use aluminum cans of any sort, the containers for the alumi-
num cans are located in the hall by the handicap door entrance. You can help to bring that alu-
minum can account back up to a useful dollar amount by bringing in your rinsed out aluminum
cans. The Apostle Pals would appreciate your contributions and so does the rest of Apostle.

A SPECIAL MEETING WITH A SPECIAL MISSION REPORT
One of the most important aspects of being an Elder is the understand-
ing that the decisions that are to be made, are based on the thought of
what God would want us to do, not what we personally want to do.
This is the basis of what it means to being a Christian. It is all about
what God would have us do and intentionally acting in that manner.
Your Elders are very dedicated to this aspect of their role as an Elder.
They are a wonderful caring group of individuals who, for the good of
this church, work hard to ensure that the word of God is captured in all they do and that the
best interest of Apostle and it’s members, is always in the front of their thoughts.
As you know, the Session is comprised of several committees. These committees are as-
signed the various tasks that keep the operation of Apostle functioning as necessary. Each
committee is dedicated to a certain function that may or may not be visible to the eye. You are
always welcome to join any one of the committees which would allow you to have a part in seeing
that the needs of your church are being met. This does not mean a huge commitment but it does
mean that you care enough to help serve your God and your church in some meaningful way.
