APOSTROPHE (‘s) is used to show property. The way to use apostrophe (‘s) is by adding it at the back of the object or person that has the object.

For example : Amir’s book means the book owned

by Amir.So, Amir is the owner of that book.

Shortly, Amir’s book translated with buku Amir.

The following are the rules of using the Apostrophe (‘s) :

• Apostrophe (‘s) is used at the back of person name or animal. Owned objects are placed at the back of the apostrophe (‘s).Examples :

Linda’s bag is big enough.

Irma’s father is a teacher

My mother’s hair is curly.

Look! That is the rabbit’s fur.

• If in one sentence there are two same objects owned by different owner, the same objects can only written once.Examples :

Andi’s car is more expensive than Kardi’s.

VS

My hair is straight but my father’s is curly.

Andrew’s house is bigger than his sister’s.

• Apostrophe (‘s) is also used to follow the place.Look at the examples !

The city’s people usually work very hard for their life.

We all know that the world’s population grows greater and greater.

• Apostrophe (‘s) is also used in conjunction with the time.Examples :

Today’s seminar will be participated by more than 300 teachers from all provinces in Indonesia.

Tomorrow’s meeting will discuss how to solve global crisis.

• Apostrophe (‘s) is also used in conjunction with noun or person in plural, to show property. But the ‘s’ must be removed.Look at the examples :

These are my schoolmates’ names

Our teachers’ book are all interesting to read.

• Apostrophe (‘s) is also used in conjunction with the organization name or groups of people. But, the apostrophe (‘s) in here can be changed with of phrase.Example :

The government’s policy will influence the economic levels of the people in the country.The policy of the government will influence the economic levels of the people in the country.

NOTE!The way to show the ownership by

using the apostrophe (‘s) is also can be changed with the of

phrase.

Example :My father’s name is Mr.Harjono

The name of my father is Mr.Harjono
