Appendix A: Land Use Planning Survey 2012 | Summary of Results The following summary is based on the results obtained from 110 complete questionnaires of the ʔaqʾam Community Land Use Planning Survey 2012. Questions were grouped in to common themes. Land Use From 104 responses, 82% of the participants felt that there was undoubtedly a need to improve the use of the ʔaqʾam lands. Although 12% were unsure, only 6% felt the Land Use was sufficient as is. Agriculture While just less than half of 106 respondents were in support of increased farming on ʔaqʾam lands, only 20% were contrary to it. When asked “Would you support allocating land to support a greenhouse business if ʔaqʾam secured a proven partner in greenhouse management, and was able to expand out bioenergy potential?” participants expressed significant approval, with 78% stating they would. Eco-Tourism More than two thirds of the participants answered positively to the introduction of Eco-tourism to ʔaqʾam. Again, a higher portion of 22% of responses were Unsure, compared to 11% stating they were against it.
Fishing & Hunting 73% of respondents stated that they fished on the reserve and 59% claimed to hunt the lands. When asked for feedback on introducing a Guide Outfitting business to cater to non-native hunters, 54% of participants were not in favour of this type of eco-tourism, only 31% showed support.

Forestry On the topic of Forestry, almost three quarters of the responses gathered indicated that the participants were in favour of multiple uses such as logging, wildlife and Wild-fire management. Stemming from this, 59% of participants supported the notion of allocating a portion of the forest for a Christmas tree business. Although a higher percentage of respondents were in favour of designating some of the forest for community members to gather firewood, those against made up 29% of the answers. Mining Just over half of responses agreed to support the expansion of gravel mining on ʔaqʾam, while 17% were still unsure and 31% against. Sewage & Water When asked about the sewage and septic facilities on the reserve, 66% of participants had concerns about the current conditions. However a smaller proportion, 55%, actually supported the idea of building a sewage treatment facility on the ʔaqʾam lands. A substantial 87% felt the water quality was not up to standard.

Sustainable Energy Production The various options of Sustainable Energy Production generated some important figures from the ʔaqʾam people. Solar Power stood out considerably as being the number one choice of the respondents with 84% in favour and only 3% against. Energy production through Geothermal methods was also reflected favourably. Wildlife Protection 70% of respondents felt that more should be done to protect the wildlife on the ʔaqʾam lands. When given the scenario of species at risk competing with economic development, respondents were asked if they would support improving habitat conditions for wildlife through implementing ecosystem restoration activities in another location of the reserve, or adjacent to the site in question, as a measure to support both economic development and the needs of wildlife. The replies indicated that although 64% were in favour, 24% were undecided and only 9% against.
