Strategies use to overcome these impacts oftourism in Karnataka

Environmental Impacts Valuing nature for its own sakeActively promoting tourism to protected area andbiological and cultural riches.

Economic Impacts Planning and acting to control risk, both personal anduniversalRecognizing real limits to growth

Social Impacts Encouraging the participation of individuals who arenot necessarily involved in the marketplace orgovernment. It actively involves the local communities in thetourism process

Question: How do you deal with inappropriate behaviors by tourists?

Tourists are on holiday freed from the daily mundane disciplines of

work and liberated from the social and cultural constraints of their

home society. They are thus prone to behave in ways that give offense

Page 67: APPENDIX A: MAPS OF TOURIST PLACES VISITED IN EACH DISTRICT …shodhganga.inflibnet.ac.in/bitstream/10603/62236/3/appendix.pdf · APPENDIX A: MAPS OF TOURIST PLACES VISITED IN EACH

APPENDIX C: QUESTIONNAIRES AND INTERVIEW

to the locals and to more legitimate and appropriate users of heritage

sites. Their dress, demeanor, and behavior are likely to be unacceptable

and destructive of the value of the sites and buildings they visit.

Answer: The frequently encountered on-site lists of rules and admonitions, as

well as the suggested codes of conduct and behavior for tourists, make

much use of the word respect’. It is insisted that the tourist should

respect the behaviour and morals of the locals, even presumably if

these are distasteful to the tourist.

These questions were meant to measure or estimate the environmental, economic, cultural

and social effects of ecotourism activity in Karnataka. All the interviewees based their

thoughts on recent growth and developments and revealed that tourism has played a

significant role impacting the lives of the local people, businesses and the local economy

in general in the following ways; a lot of unverified jobs have been created by tourism

related industries, source of income generation for the locals, village development projects

and the general monetary impacts to the local economy. Despite all these positive impacts,

some of the experts emphasized their view that tourism development in Karnataka is slow

and has suffered negligence and setbacks. They revealed that the government plan is

focused on tourism development as one of the means of revenue generation for the people.

APPENDIX D1

The relationship between activities offered on an ecotourism holidayand socio-

demographics

In measuring the relationship between the activities offered on an ecotourism holiday and

the

Socio-demographic variables, a set of null hypothesis were tested (Chapter 1: Section B).

Selecting age, gender and nationality as independent variables, the aim at this stage is to

select the different preferences according to these variables. The constant review of the

socio-demographics will advocate the areas where influence lies. Of course, the low

reliability results (a=0.57) did not permit such factors to have wide merit, although it can be

adopted as an indication rather than conclusive remarks. Here, the disagreement answers

were recorded as (1), neutral (2), agree (3), and strongly agree (4). The age, gender and

nationality classifications were computed as previously (Chapter 4). This was done to meet

the conditions of the chi-square while presenting similar data. The most influential factor

over the elements of the first questions was related to the age of tourists (Table D2).

Gender and activities offered

Gender is associated with five activities, Table D2:

Hors

eback riding (χ2=35.836): Horseback riding or Equestrianism as it is referred to,

includes the use of horses for practical working purposes, transportation, recreational

activities, artistic or cultural exercises, and competitive sport. This favorite past time

for tourists accounts for 6.74% of tourists who show interest in this activity.

Com

municating with the local people (χ2=27.062)

Wildl

ife viewing (χ2=20.639)

Visiti

ng Historical Monuments (χ2=12.193)

Age and activities offered

Age has relationships with four activities, Table D2.

Bird watching (Birding ) (χ2=141.80): “Birding” plays a significant and growing part

in the tourism industry, and creates direct and indirect economic benefits for many

countries and communities, also amongst developing countries. Wildlife watching

appeals to a wide range of people, and opportunities to participate in wildlife

watching are and should increasingly be a factor in tourists’ holiday choices today.

However, in this sample, there is a majority of younger tourists and so this activity

was not popular (42.79%).

Cycling (χ2=122.20): Cycle tourism is a travel experience that focuses on the bicycle

as the primary mode of transport. Cycle tourism combines particularly suggestive

localities (whether mountain range, country side or urban scene) that you can easily

visit on your bike. This form of tourism represents an alternative to markedly

traditional tourism. It is also an ecological and refined means to move through and

get to know various zones and territories. Of course it requires a certain physical

preparation and route planning, but the emotional rewards, rare with other means of

Page 71: APPENDIX A: MAPS OF TOURIST PLACES VISITED IN EACH DISTRICT …shodhganga.inflibnet.ac.in/bitstream/10603/62236/3/appendix.pdf · APPENDIX A: MAPS OF TOURIST PLACES VISITED IN EACH

travel, are worth the extra effort. Bicycles are easy to transport, have a low

environmental impact, and offer freedom and autonomy, thus making travel on two

wheels extremely adapted to discovering otherwise inaccessible sites. Most of the

tourists did not opt for this activity (39.23%) because of the long distances between

the ecotourism sites.

Natur

e walk (χ2=98.652): A majority of the younger tourists (62.73%) pursued this activity

(p<0.000). Many tourists prefer to interact with nature, and this activity allows them

to participate fully in exploring the environment. According to one tourists “it’s

about sharing our love and passion for the land”.

Cultural activities (χ2=69.584): Here, 71.96% of the tourists were interested in these

activities. A growing number of visitors are becoming special-interest travelers who

rank the arts, heritage and/or other cultural activities as one of the top five reasons

for traveling. These visitors are known as cultural tourists. Cultural heritage tourism

is based on the mosaic of places, traditions, art forms, celebrations and experiences

that portray this nation and its people, reflecting the diversity and character of India

and thus Karnataka. Travelers who engage in cultural tourism activities visit the

following:

art galleries, theater and museums

historic sites, communities or landmarks

cultural events, festivals and fairs

ethnic communities and neighborhoods

architectural and archaeological treasures

Nationality and activities offered

Nationality showed connection with five activities, Table D2:

Photo

graphy (χ2=66.627): Photography has become a constituting factor in the social

practice of tourism, and it is therefore important to enhance our understanding of the

relationship between the two. Photography and tourism are widely considered to be

intrinsically linked. Photographs play a crucial role in the promotion of tourism

Page 72: APPENDIX A: MAPS OF TOURIST PLACES VISITED IN EACH DISTRICT …shodhganga.inflibnet.ac.in/bitstream/10603/62236/3/appendix.pdf · APPENDIX A: MAPS OF TOURIST PLACES VISITED IN EACH

371

destinations, working through a range of media including brochures, television

commercials, and picture postcards. Meanwhile the practice of photography is often

held to be intimately related to the condition of being a tourist. Urry (1990) links

these two phenomena, suggesting that they may constitute a self-reinforcing “closed

circle of representation” in which tourist photographs both reflect and inform

destination images.Photography is popular among all tourists and recorded 81.32%

of the tourists being involved in this activity.

Visiting Protected Areas (χ2=35.943): Here, 67.23% of the tourists were interested in

this activity. The link between protected areas and tourism is as old as the history of

protected areas. Protected areas need tourism, and tourism needs protected areas.

Though the relationship is complex and sometimes adversarial, tourism is always a

critical component to consider in the establishment and management of protected

areas. While protected area planners and managers can do much to build a more

constructive relationship with the tourism sector, they operate within legal, political,

economic and cultural contexts that greatly limit their freedom. Moreover tourism

itself is driven by many forces that are beyond the influence of park managers.

Therefore the success of guidelines depends in part on action taken by governments

and others, for example in updating legislation relating to protected areas and

tourism, or introducing economic incentives to encourage sustainable forms of

tourism (Eagles, McCool and Haynes, 2002).

Sight-seeing (χ2=28.395): About 45.46% of tourists took part in the sight-seeing

activity, typically for its inherent or exhibited cultural value, historical significance,

natural or built beauty, or amusement opportunities. Some examples include

historical places, monuments, zoos, aquaria, museums and art galleries, botanical

gardens, buildings and structures (e.g., castles, garden, waterfalls, dams,

national parks and forests, theme parks and carnivals, living history museums, ethnic

enclave communities and cultural events. Many tourist attractions are

also landmarks.

Hiking (χ2=21.359): This is an outdoor activity which consists of walking in natural

environments, often in mountainous or other scenic terrain. People often hike

on hiking trails. Studies have confirmed the health benefits of different types of

hiking (McKinney, 2009) including losing excess weight, decreasing hypertension,

Page 73: APPENDIX A: MAPS OF TOURIST PLACES VISITED IN EACH DISTRICT …shodhganga.inflibnet.ac.in/bitstream/10603/62236/3/appendix.pdf · APPENDIX A: MAPS OF TOURIST PLACES VISITED IN EACH

and improving mental health (American Hiking Society, 2012). Generally, protected

areas such as parks have regulations in place to protect the environment. If hikers

follow such regulations, their impact can be minimized (Cole, 2012). Such

regulations include forbidding wood fires, restricting camping to established camp

sites, disposing or packing out fecal matter, imposing a quota on the number of

hikers per mile.

Boat trips and sailing (χ2=17.973): Boating and sailing are recreational activities

requiring dedication and skills. Throughout history sailing has been instrumental in

the development of civilization, affording humanity greater mobility than travel over

land, whether for trade, transport or warfare, and the capacity for fishing (Carter,

2006).
