ABOUT BATES Bates Technical College serves more than 11,000 students and operates on three campuses, with over 600,000 square feet of classrooms, shops, meeting rooms, and offices. Bates offers two-year associate of technology degrees, certificates of competency, certificates of training, industry certifications and, in spe- cific programs, prepares students for the achievement of state licensure achievement. The college maintains articulation degrees with several four- year universities, making some of the college’s two-year degrees transferable. Bates faculty members are indus- try experts who have mastered their profession. They maintain close ties with industry to ensure that Bates’ programs stay current with the latest industry developments and workplace requirements. Bates students learn in classrooms that mirror the workplace. Bates Technical College values its partnerships, both locally and inter- nationally. Some 500 managers and workers from local business and industry serve on program advisory committees, advising faculty and administration in workplace needs and trends. Bates partners with many local, regional and national businesses, including four local hospitals, 22 fire departments, and 20 local Home and Family Life cooperative sites. Bates is a regional training site for Cisco Acad- emy, Kawasaki Motors, and Bombardier Motor Corporation of America. The college has many train- ing partnerships, including agree- ments with Smith Tractor, Interstate Trucking, John Deere, and the Envi- ronmental Coalition of South Seattle. Bates owns and operates a PBS- Affilate television station KBTC-TV that enriches lives through programs and services that entertain, educate, inspire and are locally relevant. ABOUT THE POSITION

Under the direction of the Board of Trustees, the President serves as the visionary, main political strategist and advocate for the College. The President is the primary spokesperson to the community about the College’s role, and serves as a high-visibility builder of support and key alliances with business, the legislature, the community, technical college system and for technical education overall. The President, in collaboration with the Board of Trustees, deter-mines budget needs and priorities, the administrative organization of the College and fosters a cohesive and supportive environment, which enables students to succeed and thrive at Bates.

FUTURE CHALLENGES FACING BATES TECHNICAL COLLEGE

QUALITY OF EDUCATION

Providing quality education and job training at an affordable price in a climate of declining revenues.

BUDGET CUTS

Concurrently implementing budget cuts and maintaining Bates as a leader in instructional excellence.

CHANGE

Maintaining strategic direction and institutional stability during the next three years when a majority of the Board of Trustees’ terms expire and a significant number of faculty are retiring.

LABOR CONTRACTS

Four College labor contracts expire – three in 2012 and one in 2013.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The President must set a standard by intellectually and emotionally engag-ing people at all levels – from students and faculty to community partners – and doing so in a wide range of set-tings and through various media. The new President will lead the College in keeping its instructional programs, message and profile fresh, relevant and effective.

For this unique and important role the Board of Trustees seeks a dynamic, highly credible, unifying leader who is deeply committed to student success and embraces and respects the socio-economic, academic, cultural and ethnic diversity of the Bates Technical College community. The next Presi-dent must have a passion for educa-tion and be eager to make a personal investment in the long-term success of Bates Technical College. Proven leadership experience and political acumen are essential. Candidates should bring strengths in both exter-nal relations and internal management with an ability to balance the two.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

An earned Master’s Degree from an accredited institution with at least seven years of recent experience in a senior management role. An earned Doctorate is a plus. The preferred candidate will have experience and demonstrated success in the following areas:

Located just south of Seat-tle and north of the state capital of Olympia, Tacoma is the heart of the Puget Sound metro-politan area. The city itself rests on the shores of Commence-ment Bay and the Puget Sound, while Mount Rainier reigns in the distance.

Pierce County is home to the City of Tacoma, several subur-ban cities, small towns, and rural communities as well as forests and farmlands. The area boasts tremendous outdoor opportuni-ties with miles of Puget Sound waterfront, Mt.
