FIRST AID/CPR/AED TRAINING TO THE RESCUE...AGAIN!We salute David Johnson, O53, for his heroic actions taken to assist a store clerk who suffered cluster seizures. On friday, september 30th at 1:00 pm, david stopped by a store to get a cup of coffee (to keep him alert) and to use the atm prior to heading across the jrb. He heard loud screams coming from the front counter and discovered that the clerk had fallen to the floor and was having a severe seizure. Immediately, the training that he received in his first aid/cpr/aed night school class was put into action. He assessed the situation, called 911, and took preventative measures to protect the clerk from injury and choking. He remained with the clerk until the seizures subsided and the medic’s arrival. Upon arrival, the medics commended him on a job well done. David credits his knowledge and preparedness to act to his instructor, George Bradby, O27. He stated “wow george, you told us not to sweat it and that you will know what to do when the time comes, and i did not miss a beat. Thank you so much.” After that experience David no longer required the cup of coffee and poured it out as he left the store.

DAVID BELEW, O25, a Hampton native,

first worked at NNS during college breaks

from 1980 to 1985. His father retired as an

X36 supervisor in the North Yard, and his

youngest sister graduated from the Appren-

tice School for X43. David returned to NNS

late in 2013 as an Access application devel-

oper for Carrier Overhaul Planning (X75).

He transferred to Leadership Development

(O25) in 2016 to support the Performance

Coaching Program. David holds a B.S.

degree from Virginia Tech, with a major in

Computer Science and minors in Mathemat-

ics and Sociology.

The teaching bug bit David early in his ca-

reer. He lead both day and night classes at a

local business college for three years, served

as chair of the computer department, and

received the Teacher of the Year award prior

to his leaving to start a career as a NASA

contractor. Jumping at the chance to get back

into teaching, David became a Night School

instructor for the computer curriculum in

spring 2015. He has taught the Access 2013 Introduction and Intermediate classes, and hopes to teach the Visual

Basic class as well. David constantly encourages his students to help each other, both in class and on the job.

“Access is one of the least understood pieces of the Microsoft Office suite. So many people (ab)use Excel

to do what is essentially database work, because they have no idea how to use Access. I want to fix that.”
