(K) Methods of Production :
o. Field Preporotion
In Mizoram, Ch i l l i i s cu l t i ' va ted most ly under Jhuming sys tem or Sh i f t ing cu l t i va t ion sys tem, on h i l l
s lops. In this type r: f system, large tracts of hi l ls are cleared by burning. Raised beds (Cal led bum) of
about one meter width are made along the slope arrd again covered with farm wastes dr ied leaves
etc. which are being burrr t before sowing of seeds. Ihe burning of f ie ld helps in reducing the weed
growth, soft rot disease and increase the avai labi l i t 'y of certain plant nutr ients, part icular ly Potash.
Th is jhum land is abandoned a f te r 3 -5 years and new p iece o f land is c leared in s imi la r fash ion .

I t i s genera l l y cu l t i va ted by broadcas t ing and d ibb l ing method, and Mi ; ro Ch i l l i seeds are spread
between paddy crops in the month of Apri l before onset of Monsoon. There is no hybrid used for
Mizo Chi l l i and the seed from previous year crop is kerpt for next year sowing.
c. lrriqation
The cult ivat ion is most ly rainfed in nature because of lack of i r r igat ion sources but with the
advantage of high rainfal l spread over a period of s i ;x to eight months farrners are st i l l able to grow
p a d d y a n d c h i l i .
d. lnterculturol
The crop requires regulalweeding because of fast growth of weed in cleared forest land. Normal lv
2-3 hand weed ing is done fo r the c rop and no herb ic ides are used.
