A summary of the coach education system

offered by the Icelandic Football Association

The Icelandic Football Association (KSI) has a tradition of offering quality education for football coaches in Iceland. Our system at the UEFA B level has now been accepted by the Jira Project Panel. To advance to the UEFA A level, coaches need to have the UEFA B coaching license, and then coach for 1 year minimum at a football club. There is also a minimum age requirement of 18 years to enter the propesed UEFA A coaching course. This application for the UEFA A coaching license takes into account UEFA´s requirements in terms of amount of hours and required content, as well as the required percentages between theoretical and practical units.

It is our hope and belief that the following courses are equivalent to the UEFA A coaching licence.

* These 4 hours need to be completed in the following 2 weeks after the coaching course in a self study, using the Homeground coaches software. Each coach needs to send us (by e-mail) 4 of his favourite drills. Each drill needs to have an animation and a detailed text with the goal of the drill, for which agegroup it is suitable, coaching points etc. The drills are then put up on the Icelandic F.A´s website and forwarded to all the participants at the coaching course. Each coach will therefore receive a lot of new drills and ideas and will become fluid in using the coaches software.

Further information on the teaching practice: One of the most important parts of the (proposed) UEFA A course is the teaching practice, and there we use a group format. The idea is that a coach will get instruction/guidance from a coach educator while the coach coaches his own team in a match, and then again in 2 training sessions. At the same time, the coach hasa a chance to ask the coach educator questions regarding the coaching parts, and the coach educator will share from his knowledge/expertise and discuss the coaches performance. The other coaches who are in the same group also have their say and take part in discussions. One of the main objectives of the coach educator is to facilitate good discussions within the group. In that way, the coaches will both learn from the coach educator and from each other.

Structure:

1. In the teaching practice we have a group of 4-5 coaches together in a group with one coach educator who leads them in the teaching practice. KSI will organize the groups and where the coaches live in Iceland will be taken into consideration for practical reasons. Much emphasis is put on the quality of the teaching at this stage so we assign only a small number of coaches to each coach educator.

2. The coach educator and the coach decide together where and when it is suitable to come and visit and watch a match and two training sessions where the coach is coaching his own team. The coach educator informs the rest of the group where

Application for UEFA-A Coaching Licence

The Football Association of Iceland Knattspyrnusamband Íslands

and when to meet. The coach is observed during the team meeting before the match, during the match itself, and during the post match talk. After that, the group goes into discussions led by the coach educator.

3. The group sums up the match with the coach and in the end it should be clear what needs to be improved and focused on for the training session to follow.

4. The first training session (out of the two training sessions) should focus on improving the things that went wrong in the match. The coach hands out an outline of the training session before it starts, and should also explain verbally to the group what he is going to do in the training session, why, and what he wants to accomplish (objectives, ways to accomplish them, choice of exercises etc.). The training session needs to be structured and well organized. The training session is 90 minutes long with 30 minutes of discussions afterwards.

5. The coach educator has some flexibility in deciding the setup of the 2nd training session. The coach might get a problem to solve (e.g. to set up a training session that focuses on teaching high pressure) or he might keep working with the things that went wrong in the match, this is decided by the coach educator. This second training session is also our practical examination and will be graded (pass/fail with feedback).

6. Each coach coaches his own team in the teaching practice, but then attends and participates in discussions when the other coaches in the group coach their own teams.

7. Each coach keeps a coaching log book whenever the teaching practice takes place. It is therefore necessary to take notes every time the group meets up. The coaching log book is explained in more detail after this section.

8. The coach educator keeps track of the completed number of hours. Each coach needs to complete a minimum of 30 hours in the teaching practice (that includes when he is coaching himself and also when he is observing other coaches and taking part in discussions).

9. In the end, the coach educator turns in an assessment/grade for each coach, which the coach then receives by mail from us. His choice of exercises, the quality of his coaching, his part in the discussions etc. will all be graded.

10. The teaching practice should be completed before February 1st. The coaching log book is due February 15th.

Each match counts 5 hours (1 study hour equals 40 minutes) and each training session counts for 3 hours. Example:

Group 1: Coach educator

with 5 coaches in his group: Coaches: Match Training 1 Training 2

Coach 1 attends the hours that are in bold and underlined, a total of 30 study hours (11 hours with his own team, and 19 hours to observe other coaches), but still attends at least once per each coach´s teaching practice. This is the required minimum number of hours for the teaching practice, but the coaches are welcome to attend more hours if they like.

Coaching log book (10 hours)

November-February 10 hours Coaching log book - Report from the teaching practice practical

Further information on the coaching log book: The coaching log book starts at the same time as the teaching practice in KSI VII. What the coach learns and writes down throughout the period of the teaching practice becomes the main source for his coaching log.

The following points need to be addressed in the coaching log book:

How the coach prepared himself and his team for the match, points he discussed in the team meeting, playing formation and tactics, and his objectives for the match.

How did the coaching in the match go? What was discussed after the match, and what did the coach learn from these discussions? What needed to be improved from the match and was therefore the focus of the 1st training session?

A detailed outline should be handed in explaining both training sessions and how the coach thought they went.

What did the group discuss after the training sesssions, and what did the coach learn from these discussions?

What did the coach learn from observing other coaches at work? The coach is encouraged to be precise in answers and give examples.

The coaching log book should have a short section where the coach shares some of his coaching wisdom with the other coaches. This section will be forwarded to all the coaches attending the coaching course.

The coach should always take notes and write down his learning experience each time there are discussions, meetings, training sessions or matches during the teaching practice. The coaching log book is proof of what the coach has learned in the teaching practice, and from observing other coaches at work. The coach educator is responsible for grading the coaching log book and giving feedback.

The Football Association of Iceland Knattspyrnusamband Íslands
