Increasing Data Center Agility and Efficiency for On-Demand Networks Server virtualization has changed the way IT organizations plan, manage, and provision compute resources. The decoupling of Virtual Machines (VMs) from the underlying server hardware has significantly increased data center efficiency. Operations that used to require days, or even weeks, can be accomplished in minutes. This same virtualization benefit is now available for the network.

Today’s enterprises and service providers must be able to provision or change the networking service tier on-demand. By virtualizing network services, these organizations can eliminate operational constraints due to existing network equipment and increase data center agility and efficiency.

BROCADE VIRTUAL ADX APPLICATION DELIVERY SWITCH

APPLICATION DELIVERY

APPLICATION DELIVERY CONTROLLER FOR THE VIRTUALIZED DATA CENTER Brocade enables an on-demand service delivery model and extends the reach of application delivery service into virtual architectures through the Brocade® Virtual ADX® Application Delivery Switch. The Brocade Virtual ADX leverages the same system architecture and operating system as the physical Brocade ADX Application Delivery Switch. It has a dedicated, logical management processor and multiple logical application cores to intelligently load-balance traffic (see Figure 1). The management processor performs management tasks and monitors the health of servers, while the application core takes user traffic and performs server load balancing. This distributed architecture enables increased performance as more virtual CPU cores are added to the VM.

The Brocade Virtual ADX offers robust Layer 4–7 services with high availability and comprehensive management by leveraging rich APIs (see Table 1). It provides advanced load-balancing methods to choose the best server in both a virtual and physical infrastructure. In addition, the Brocade Virtual ADX can monitor server connection load, server resources such as CPU, memory, and application response time in order to deliver the best application performance and reliability. It also utilizes a flexible application scripting engine for real-time application services. Through the comprehensive portfolio of Brocade ADX application delivery switches, organizations can now choose between the virtual and physical Brocade ADX platforms to meet their different deployment needs.

Automated Service Provisioning The Brocade Virtual ADX is provided as a single Open Virtualization Archive (OVA) file that enables the rapid creation of virtual application delivery switch instances on a standard hypervisor, including ESX/ESXi, KVM, and XenServer (see Table 2). Released from the physical constraints of hardware appliances, the Brocade Virtual ADX can be moved and deployed close to application workloads to optimize traffic flows. The application delivery services can now be provisioned, configured, and changed dynamically with the agility of software.

Flexible Network Deployment The Brocade Virtual ADX offers flexible virtual networking options to meet a variety of data center requirements that include:

• Security compliance that requires a dedicated load balancing platform

• High-performance server load balancing such as DSR (Direct Server Return)

• Seamless extension of the physical networking infrastructure with VLAN tagging

Rapid Creation and Delivery of New Services The Brocade Virtual ADX accelerates the creation and delivery of new cloud service offerings through the Brocade OpenScript® engine. This unique scripting engine enables organizations to program a Perl script that can inspect and modify application traffic flows in real time. Organizations can utilize the core functionality of the Brocade Virtual ADX through application scripting to meet their business requirements.

Comprehensive and Extensible Management The Brocade Virtual ADX provides an industry-standard Command Line Interface (CLI) and an advanced Web-based Graphical User Interface (GUI). The Web GUI includes real-time system monitoring, configuration management, and OpenScript development tools as described below:

• Real-time system monitoring: Provides detailed system information, resource utilization, network status, and traffic monitoring

• Configuration management: Creates a server load balancing service quickly

• OpenScript development tools: Enables rapid development of an application script with intelligent OpenScript editor, built-in compiler, and performance estimator

Administrators can also leverage the SOAP/XML API to integrate control of the Brocade Virtual ADX into both custom and third-party orchestration tools. Application professionals can now customize and automate the control of application delivery services to reduce the deployment time of the load balancing service while minimizing human errors.

Reduced Total Cost of Ownership The Brocade Virtual ADX can dramatically reduce initial capital investment by leveraging standard x86 server hardware for application-specific needs, while shifting the cost of specialized hardware to the edge of the network, where high-performance and scale-up requirements are most demanding. In addition, virtualization allows multiple independent Brocade ADX instances to occupy a single server, which enables more than one customer or department to share the same equipment, thereby making more efficient use of valuable hardware resources.

BROCADE VIRTUAL ADX USE CASES The data center has grown in both size and scope, evolving into a multi-tier, distributed environment that includes private, public, and hybrid clouds (Figure 2). The Brocade Virtual ADX provides agile and cost-effective application delivery solutions for these diverse deployment models.

Flexible Hybrid Cloud Deployment Varying demands on compute and network resources pose a significant challenge for administrators planning for the right capacity in a hybrid cloud environment. However, by leveraging the cloud bursting capability of Brocade Application Resource Broker, in conjunction with the Brocade Virtual ADX and standards-based APIs, administrators can burst their local application delivery resource footprints. They can create additional virtual ADX instances in either a private or public cloud when demand for computing resources exceeds capacity, then recapture the capacity as demand subsides. This operating model enables network traffic to be offloaded in a cost-effective manner when it exceeds the resources in the on-premise data center.

Optimal Path for Multitenancy Security in a multitenant cloud network is an ongoing concern for cloud service providers and enterprise users. One significant challenge is maintaining compliance with corporate and regulatory standards, while leveraging the shared infrastructure model’s cost benefits and improved operational efficiency. To meet this challenge, each enterprise customer must have its own private network infrastructure. The Brocade Virtual ADX enables cloud service providers to cost-effectively create a dedicated application delivery instance with a high level of isolation for each subscriber.

Rapid Prototyping and Testing Configuring an application delivery switch takes time, and may require multiple changes to meet the deployment needs of an application. This process is especially challenging when it involves advanced content manipulation, such as credit card number scrubbing. To facilitate this complex requirement, a customer typically

has to build a sandbox system that can simulate all of the functional aspects of the production environment. With the Brocade Virtual ADX, administrators can now create a virtual application delivery instance to test basic server load balancing and develop advanced application scripting features anytime, anywhere.
