INTRODUCTION

A Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) is produced by incorporation of clay soil and geotextile or geomembrane. The clay soil is sandwiched in between geotextile or geomembrane which together acts as a liquid barrier and helps prevent passage of any liquid through it. The clay which is used is bentonite mostly as it has a very low hydraulic conductivity.

Geosynthetics:

Geosynthetics are human made materials used from various types of polymers to enhance and make possible cost effective environmental, transportation and geotechnical engineering construction projects. They are used to provide one or more of the following functions :

LANDFILL LINER:

o A landfill liner is an engineered layer of soil underneath a waste disposal site on which waste is disposed or dumped.

o It acts as a barrier and prevents the contaminants from leaching out and reaching the ground water.

USE OF FLYASH WITH BENTONITE:

o Bentonite is a type of clay soil containing montmorillonite mineral.

o It has large cation exchange capacity, large specific surface area, high swelling potential and low hydraulic conductivity. Hydraulic conductivity of bentonite (k<= 1*10^-7)

o Though it is suitable for liner material, using alone makes it uneconomical and less durable.

o Flyash can be used for stabilizing expansive clays like bentonite.

o Bentonite mixed with flyash reduces its swelling behaviour and increases its stress resistance.

CONCLUSION:

The use of GCL has become very advantageous for the society to dump and dispose waste materials safely without affecting the ground water table present underneath protecting the surrounding ground water and solving environmental and ecological problems.
