What will the course involve?

ALevelAppliedBusinessisdifferentfromALevelBusinessStudiesinanumberofways.Firstly,asthe‘Applied’titlesuggestswetrytogiveyouagreaterinvolvementwithbusinesses;somoretripstobusinesses,moreresearchofrealbusinesses,aone-weekworkplacementinthefirstyearandagreaterdevelopmentofthepersonalskillsyouwillneedtodowellinabusiness.

Secondly,theAppliedcourseisworth2ALevels,soyouspenddoubletheamountoftimeonitthanonBusinessStudies.

Thirdly,itinvolvesmorecoursework.

How will I be assessed?

ProgressonAppliedBusinessismostlythroughcoursework:ofthesixunitsdoneinthefirstyear,fourarebycoursework,andthesamegoesforthesecondyear.Youwill

dooneexamintheJanuaryandoneinthesummerofeachyear.Thisgivesyougreatercontroloveryourachievement.Youwillreceiveregularfeedbackfromyourtutorandhavethechancetoimproveyourcourseworkassignments.

Where does this course lead?

SinceAppliedBusinessisadoubleALevelinBusiness,itleadstosimilarcoursesatuniversityasBusinessStudies,aswellasApprenticeships.However,italsohasanaddeddimension.Duringthecourseyouwillbeinvolvedinactivitiesthatwillhelpyoutodeveloparangeofbusinessskillssuchasinvestigation,reportwritingandpresentationalskills.ThisshouldequipyoubetterforthestyleoflearningatuniversityorduringanApprenticeship.Itwillalsogiveyouagreaterabilitytopromoteyourselfifyouseektoenteremploymentorsetupyourownbusinessaftercollege,insteadofgoingtouniversity.

AtCarmelIhavebeenabletolearnarangeoftechniqueswhichhaveenabledmetobecomemoreconfidentandfocusedonwhatIwantinlife.InAppliedBusiness,Ihaveenjoyedthediverserangeoftopics;alloftheindividualunitshavegivenmeaninsightintothedifferentpathwayswithinthebusinesssectorthatIwouldbeabletofollow.WithinthissubjectIhavebeenontwotrips,onetoDarkstarLaserquestandtheothertoCineworld,bothoftheseinvolvedresearchingandcollectinginformationaboutthecompany.Wehadinterviewswiththemanagersofbothestablishmentsandthenwereabletotakepartinactivities.WhenIleaveCarmelIhopetogainafulltimepositionwithmycurrentemployer.

OurAppliedBusinessStudentshavereallybenefittedfromworkingcloselywithoutsideorganisations.ThisofteninvolvesvisitingtheseorganisationsandtripsthisyearincludedavisittoLiverpoolMaritimeMuseumandtheLiverpoolOneComplex.Thestudentslistenedtoprofessionalstalkaboutthecustomerserviceprovidedbytheorganisationsandwereprovidedwithinformationaboutthemarketingoftheattractions.StudentshavealsohadfunlearningaboutDarkstarinStHelens.Thetripincludedamarketingtalkaswellasagameoflaserquest.TheyalsovisitedCineworldinStHelenstolearnaboutthemarketingandwatchedamovietopolishoffaveryenjoyableday.ThestudentsareinvitedeveryyearbytheTourismstudentstoparticipateinaresidentialtrip.ThetripthisyearwasLondonbutinpreviousyearshasbeenNewYorkCityandToronto.GuestspeakersincludeYoungEntrepreneur(Director),MarkStanburywhosharedwiththestudents,thesecretofhissuccess,AnneQuaylefromPilkingtonGlass(MarketingManager)aswellastalksfromtheCollegeFinanceDirectorandMarketingManager.Tosupportthe

AspartoftheirA2AppliedBusinesscoursework,studentshavevoicedtheiropinionregardingthecurrentdebateof‘HealthyEating’and‘FAIRTRADE’producewithinCarmelCollege.Afterextensiveresearchconductedoverathreemonthperiod,allstudentspresentedtheirresultstoaboardofsignificantdecisionmakersandinfluentialindividualswithin,andexternallyto,thecollege.Asaresultofthisinspiringprojectthreestudentsweretheninvitedtorepresentthestudentvoiceonthetenderingprocesstochoosethenewcateringcompanyforthecollege.

OurtalentedstudentshavedonefurtherworkinrelationtoFairtrade,whentheyrecentlyenteredanational‘SnackAttack’competition.Studentsshowcasedtheirbusinessknowledgeandcreativeskillsbydesigningapromotionalcampaign.

How does Applied Business differ to Business Studies?

AppliedBusinessismainlycourseworkbasedandthereforestudentsneedtoreallyenjoyspendingstudytimeproducingcoursework.Theywillbeexpectedtospendatleastfourhoursperweekoutsidecollege,workingontheircoursework.Thegradeforthisworkmakesuptwothirdsoftheirfinalcoursemark.AppliedBusinessstudentsusuallyhaveadesiretoeitherstudyBusinessatuniversityorprogresstoaBusinesscareeraftercollege.BusinessStudiesisallexamassessedandhasnocoursework.
