UNIT LEARNING CONTEXT: Independent Living

TASK 1: Leaving home information product (87 marks) (20%)Your task is to create an information product that can be used by people moving out of home for the first time.

Your finished product must address the following essential cost areas: Food Clothing Utilities-electricity, telephone, mobile, internet account, gas, water Shelter Transport

Additional aspects to cover include: income proof of identity bank accounts entertainment luxuries (eating out, going to the movies, video/DVD) the law (lease agreements, legal ages) useful agencies online help

Time allocationThree weeks in and out of class to complete this task.

What you need to doInstructions for Part 1 and 2 Create documents in a word processing package. Answer the questions and create a new sub-heading for each question. Write detailed, full sentence answers. Put your name and today’s date in the footer section of the document.

Part 1: Initial planning [24 marks]1. Create a word processed document and call it INITIAL PLANNING.

a. For whom is this product being created? (Consider the following: age, gender, economic status, access to technology, IT literacy, education)

b. What style of information product would most appeal to the target audience you have identified in question 1 and why? (e.g. web page, information brochure, video, PowerPoint presentation)

c. List and explain the techniques you would use to make your information product capture the attention of the audience.

d. Construct a table with the following headings: essential hardware/software; reasons; personal skill level.

i. In the table, list the software and/or hardware you would consider to be essential to completing this task

ii. Provide reasons for why you consider the software and/or hardware to be essential.

Applied Information Technology: Sample unit package Unit 1C 9

Page 10: Applied Information Technologymembers.iinet.net.au/~jgowland/bcc/AIT/AIT-1C.doc  · Web viewSample unit package for Unit 1C . Unit learning context: Independent living. This sample

iii. Indicate areas where you believe your abilities in using the hardware/software are adequate, excellent or require more training.

2. Create a new word processed document and call it JOURNAL. Insert a footer with your name and today’s date on it. During each lesson, make an entry in your journal:

write down the date list what you have accomplished during the lesson. explain how the work was done (techniques used, software/hardware). explain why you chose to do the work in the way you have (style, graphics, impact,

emphasis, structure, limitations). explain any problems you have encountered and the solutions you achieved.

Part 2: Investigation [23 marks]1. Create a new word processed document and call it INVESTIGATION.

a. List possible sources of information or other resources you might require to make your information product.

b. List the information you will need to research in order to create your information product.

c. List possible key words or phrases you might use on internet search engine.

2. Create another word processed document and call it BIBLIOGRAPHY. In the footer, insert your name and today’s date. Make a list of your references and indicate how useful reference was.

3. Create a word processed document and call it NOTES. In the footer, insert your name and today’s date. In this document, store your notes and graphic resources in discrete sections. Ensure that each item of information and graphics is correctly annotated with its source or reference listed with it.

4. Examine the design features of existing information products e.g. brochures, PowerPoint, WebPages etc. These features include: layout, graphics, background, text style or something eye-catching.

Identify the positive features that you could incorporate into your work. Make sure any ideas that you might like to use are recorded in your NOTES document.

5. Gather any other notes, ideas and resources for your own information product. Record them in your NOTES document.

Part 3: Developmental planning [20 marks]1. Using any of the planning templates provided, create annotated plans that use both text and

diagrams to describe all aspects of how your finished product might look. Make sure your name is on each piece of work.

2. Now look at the plans you have made. Identify areas that could be done in a different way or improved upon. In your journal, record your ideas of how your plans could be changed along with an explanation of why these changes would be an improvement.

3. Create a new set of plans that include your improvements

4. Create a word processed document and call it PLANNING NOTES. Follow the same rules for headings and sub-headings as per previous documents. In this document, explain how your work can be made interesting for the target audience.

5. In your PLANNING NOTES document, make notes about why the medium (video, PowerPoint, brochure, web page) you have chosen will be able to reach the most number of people in the target audience. Consider the following aspects:

Access to IT Education (IT Literacy) Wealth of target audience Family values/ beliefs Cost of production and distribution

6. List any additional resources you might need in your PLANNING NOTES document.

7. In your PLANNING NOTES document, document any problems that may arise and solutions that may be needed.

Part 4: Create your Information Product [10 marks] 1. Create your Information Product in the medium you have chosen.

2. Make a record of all changes to the original design in your JOURNAL.

3. Test your product; make a judgement on whether it meets the design brief criteria based on your own plans for the product. If it does, move on to the Part 5: Evaluation.

If your information product does not meet the design brief criteria, state what is not yet finished and why. Then modify and/or upgrade your work and record changes made in your JOURNAL. (Note: Do this process for as many times as it takes for you to perfect your information product)

Part 5: Evaluate your information product [10 marks]In this section, create a new document and call it EVALUATION. In the footer, put your name and today’s date.

For each of the following questions, create a new sub-heading, write in full sentence answers and explore the implications of each answer.

1. Is your product finished and does it fulfil your designed expectations? Explain why it does or does not.

2. State why your finished information product will appeal to your target audience. Describe those aspects that you have used in detail to make the product more attractive to your target audience. Why do you think such strategies will work?

3. Describe any negative issues for our society associated with your finished product e.g. health issues, pollution, excessive power consumption, IT literacy and access (equity).

4. Explain which aspects of your finished work are the best and why.

5. Explain which aspects of your finished work you would do differently if asked to do this project again and why.

6. Using any of the criteria above and/or any of your own, make a survey of other students and seek their opinions of your work.

7. After your own evaluation and the evaluation of your peers do you feel you have created a successful product? Why/why not?

TASK 3: Budgeting using spreadsheets—Can I afford to leave home? (32 marks) (20%)This task is a continuation of the moving out of home task. In this scenario, you have moved out of home and have begun to rent a property. The house has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with a large backyard with plenty of lawn. Listed below are the set costs. Some of these are average amounts that may vary depending on consumption.

Rent: $280 per week Lawn mowing: $40 per month Electricity: $160 bi-monthly Water: $220 quarterly Gas: $100 bi-monthly Landline Telephone: $60 per month

When you took the property you paid the bond, a letting fee and two weeks rent in advance. You have a dog and are required to also pay a pet bond that will be used to clean carpets and spray for fleas. The bond is equivalent to four weeks’ rent and the letting fee is one week’s rent. Pet bond is equal to one week’s rent, with the proviso that should costs exceed one week’s rent equivalence the renter will pick up any extra costs. Connection fees for all utilities were $50 each (electricity, gas, water, telephone).

Your only source of income is your work at a local supermarket. You earn $15 per hour and always work 30 hours per week (your gross wage). Standard tax rate is 21%. Your take-home pay is: gross wage – tax = net wage.

Time allocationTwo weeks in and out of class to complete this task.

Step 1: In a spreadsheet, make a realistic list of your own expenses under the following headings: (use meaningful labels to describe your expenses) Luxuries Entertainment Transport

Use mathematical formulae to reduce your costs to a weekly value. For example:

If I buy 1 pair of extra shoes a year for $520 My weekly commitment to this is 520/52 = 10

NOTES: Luxuries: Premium personal grooming products, expensive make-overs, excessive clothing or

shoes, mobile phones, internet connection, computer/laptop, rental of a TV/Stereo/DVD player, lollies/cakes/soft drinks/alcohol are all luxury items.

Entertainment: items such as the going to the movies, buying or renting DVD’s or games, renting Foxtel, going out to a venue (restaurant/pub/nightclub) are all entertainment

Transport: the cost and maintenance of any vehicle you have e.g. pushbike, scooter, motorbike, and car. Alternatively the cost of public transport e.g. bus, train, taxi are all considered transport costs.

Step 2: In your spreadsheet, make a column heading called FOOD. In this column, make a realistic list of your food expenses for a week. Make sure you use labels and descriptions that make sense. Do not include any item from the luxuries/entertainment/transport expenses.

Step 3: In your spreadsheet, add the costs of living in terms of your rent and utilities as listed in the task overview above. Alter the values mathematically within the spreadsheet so that it automatically gives you the weekly value of your living costs.

Step 4:In a new sheet, create a small spreadsheet to calculate the costs of moving into the house i.e. bond, letting fee, etc.

Step 5: Calculate your weekly take-home pay under the heading ‘Income’. You work at a local supermarket and earn $15 per hour and you always get 30 hours per week (your gross wage). This is the only source of income you have. Standard tax rate is 21%. Your take home pay is gross wage – tax = net wage.

Step 6: Create a new sub-heading called Savings. Take the total of your expenses from the total of your income. What is left is savings.

Step 7:Answer the questions below in a word document using full sentence answers

Questions Set 11. How much do you have to save in order to be able to move into the house?

2. Do you earn enough to live in the house alone?

3. How many hours a week would you have to work a week in order to earn enough to live (and survive) in the house?

Questions Set 2You decide to get in housemates to share the moving in and ongoing living costs. Modify your spreadsheet information to show how costs alter when you get in 1, 2, or 3 housemates.

1. How many house mates do you need before it is affordable to move out and rent a home?

2. How many hours do you need to work and how many housemates do you need before you start making enough savings to go on a holiday costing $4000 in one year’s time.

3. Reduce some of your luxury expenses and indicate if the overall costs become more affordable.

Questions Set 31. Comment on the advantages and disadvantages of using electronic tools such as the

spreadsheet you have made in making predictions/forecasts or for planning.

2. Review your work, how would you have changed what you have done to improve it if you were to do it again?

TASK 4: Buying my own computer (54 marks) (10%)This task requires you to put together the specifications for a computer for your home that will last you for 2–3 years. You will need to list each item of the specification, stating: why you chose it; what it does; why is it important to be the size/speed/type that it is; and the total cost of the unit.

Along with the cost of the final unit, you are required to answer a short series of questions.

Time allocationThree weeks in and out of class to complete this task.

What you need to do:Step 1Define the following terms providing as much detail as you can.

RAM Switch CPU Cat 5 cable HDD Browser Bus speed Operating system Frontside bus Software Cache Freeware Graphics cards Shareware Power supply LCD Expansion slots CRT Dot matrix printer Plug and play Laser printer Firewall ADSL Virus Modem Trojan Router

Step 2List what you want this computer to do for you. Don’t forget that this computer is to last 2–3 years and needs to do everything you want. This is your specification list that you would take to a shop, so you need to make sure that it is complete and has such things as speed, size, memory, cache, O/S, software, extras as needed.

Step 3Investigate possible options for where to buy your computer. Look at building your own versus complete units; purchasing online or through a shop; extended warranties and support.

Step 4Answer the following questions.

1. In 2–3 years time, list the components that will need to be replaced. How will you dispose of the items that you have identified as needing replacement?

2. List the environmental issues involved with computers and their components. Why don’t we just throw it into landfill?

3. If your computer is connected to the internet, what should you protect it from? And how do you protect it?

4. Computer technologies are always changing to meet the needs of the users. Apart from always getting faster, they are also getting smaller. What components of a computer system would you like to see smaller? What don’t you want to see smaller? What could stop items from getting smaller?

5. When you specified your machine, you had to allow for an operating system and software; there are versions of this software available called Open Source. What does Open Source mean? Why would/wouldn’t you use it?

Step 5:Write a short report that contains the information from steps 1–4.
