Applying For A Job • Once you find a job of interest - you will need 3 things to
apply:1.Resume (6 parts)2.Letter of Application or Cover Letter (8 parts, 4 paragraphs)3.Job Application
Resume – • 1 -2 page description of your history and
qualifications.• Its purpose is NOT to get you a job, but to get you
an interview!!
Job Application do’s / don’tsDO - make sure you read all instructions before you begin.DO - print all information and sign your name.DO - use a blue or black ballpoint pen.DO - answer all questions honestly.DO - write open for “salary expected”
DON’T - leave any questions unanswered. If a question does not apply to you, write NA (not applicable) in the space provided.
DON’T – misspell words.DON’T – cross anything out.
Six (6) Parts of a Resume1. Personal Information
Your full name Complete home address, city and state Your home and or cell number, Email address
2. Professional Objective This can be a short statement, usually not
complete sentences telling the employer why you want the job. It also may be as simple as the job title that you are applying for.

3. Education• List all of the schools you have attended• Name of the school• City and state of the school• Time period in which you attended• List your current school first and your first school last

4. Work Experience & Work Skills• Include information on all previous work you have
performed in the last 10 years.• Include: babysitting, lawn work, paper routes,
tutoring, church service, volunteering etc.• List the employer’s / company name, city, state and
the time period in which you were employed. • List any special skill you have that will make you a
valuable asset to the employer.• Include: computer & typing skills, ability to work with
others, operating any equipment/machinery, your work ethic, etc.

5. Honors, Achievements, and Interests• List any awards you have won:• Sports, music, honor roll, student of month,
perfect attendance, etc.• Hobbies and interests could also be listed on
this page.

4. Opening paragraph: State why you are writing; how you learned of the organization or position, and basic information about yourself.
5. 2nd paragraph: Tell why you are interested in the employer or type of work the employer does (Simply stating that you are interested does not tell why, and can sound like a form letter). Demonstrate that you know enough about the employer or position to relate your background to the employer or position. Mention specific qualifications which make you a good fit for the employer’s needs. (Focus on what you can do for the employer, not what the employer can do for you.) This is an opportunity to explain in more detail relevant items in your resume. Refer to the fact that your resume is enclosed. Mention other enclosures if such are required to apply for a position.
6. 3rd paragraph: Indicate that you would like the opportunity to interview for a position or to talk with the employer to learn more about their opportunities or hiring plans. State what you will do to follow up, such as telephone the employer within two weeks.
7. 4th paragraph: If you will be in the employer’s location and could offer to schedule a visit or interview, indicate when. State that you would be glad to provide the employer with any additional information needed. Thank the employer for her/his consideration.
