Applying Images to a Bar Graph in Excel 1. Applying Images to a Bar Graph in Excel

1. Click the Clip Art button on the drawing toolbar (If you can’t find it, click View on the menu bar, scroll down to Toolbar, then scroll over and click on

Drawing to put a checkmark next to it.)

2. Select an appropriate image and right click on it, then click Copy.

3. Go back to the graph, then click on the markers (bars) and click Edit on the

menu bar and select Paste4. Then, the images will appear as data bars.

5. Select data markers (bars) and right click on the bar, then click Format data

series6. Press Fill effects7. Select Stretch, Stack, or select Stack and scale to and set scale.8. See what happens!

9. To choose a picture that you already have on your computer, click on select picture.

10. Then, use the scroll bars to find the picture you would like. Click on the picture and click insert.

To change the colors, patterns, style, and textures of the bars:

11. To select a pattern instead, click on the pattern tab. Click on the pattern you want and then click OK. To change the color of the pattern, click on the arrow next to the foreground box. Click on the color you want. Then click on the arrow next to the background box and click on the color you want.

12. To select a texture, click on the texture tab. Click on the texture you want and then click OK.

13. To change the fill of the bar, click on the gradient tab. To have one color, click on the circle next to one color. Then, click on the arrow next to color and click on the color you want. To have two colors, click on the arrow next to two colors, and then select the color you want again, but you need to do it for both colors.

14. To change the shading of the colors, click on the arrow next to dark if you want it darker. Click on the arrow next to light if you want the color lighter.

15. To change the direction of shading, click the circle next to the style of shading you want.

Linking an Excel Graph in Word and PowerPoint1. Start Microsoft Excel and open a graph. 2. Select the graph so that the handles surround the graph as a whole.3. Click Edit on the menu

bar, and then click copy (or Ctrl + c). A dotted border will appear around the graph.

4. Open a new or existing document in Microsoft Word or PowerPoint.

5. Move the cursor where you would like the graph to be inserted.

6. Click Edit on the menu bar, and then click Paste Special

7. Click Paste link, Select Microsoft Excel Chart Object, and then click OK.

8. The graph will appear in the designated location in the Word document or PowerPoint slide. You can resize and manipulate the graph to meet your preferences.

9. Now if you make any changes in Excel, the changes will carry over to the Word document or PowerPoint slide.

10. If it doesn’t change automatically, right click the graph and refresh it.

Note:The changes will not transfer between documents unless they are linked. A file is linked when both files are open on the same computer. For example, if you were to take your Excel file on disk to the computer lab on campus, and you make changes, the changes will not transfer to the Word document on your computer at home.

Changing colors in graphs:1. To change the color of the different elements of a graph in excel, start out

by creating or opening an existing graph in excel.2. If you would like to change the colors of the bars, columns, etc. of the

graph, right mouse click on the Bar Series you would like to change.

3. On the pop up menu select .

4. On the next pop up screen you can change both the color of the border of the bar series and/or the area color of the bar series.

5. Select the color you want and click OK.

6. To change the color of the chart area, right mouse click anywhere in thechart area (area without actual graph or key).

7. In the pop-up menu select Format Chart Area.

8. Here you can change the Border and the Area in the same way you did above.

9. After you click on the colors you want click OK.

1. To remove gridlines from a graph in excel, first right mouse click in the chart area of your graph. (don’t click directly on a gridline)

2. On the pop-up menu select Chart Options.

3. In this screen you can remove the gridlines by clicking on the Gridlines tab and then simply click OFF the check marks for the X and Y categories (both

major and minor). To add gridlines, click the boxes to place a checkmark next to the gridlines you want displayed

4. After you make the changes click “OK”.
