TRUSTEE APPOINTMENT BRIEF NOVEMBER 2018
01 ABOUT MHA
MHA is the UK’s 18th largest charity, providing care, accommodation and support services for older people
throughout Britain. With an annual income of over £228m in 2017/18, MHA is one of the most well respected
care providers in the sector and has been providing services to older people for 75 years. The majority of this
income is derived from fees charged for services provided but we are fortunate in receiving donations in the
region of £5 million per annum, many of which are from the Methodist community. These enable us to deliver
specialist services rarely found in other organisations.
MHA’s Care Homes’ residents gave a score of 96% for overall satisfaction in the latest independent national
survey by Your Care Rating of residents’ views of staff, care and quality of life. The charity’s quality ratings are
one of the highest in the sector with 91% of our services being rated as ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’
MHA delivers a range of high quality services to over 18,000 individuals, helping reduce loneliness and isolation
by creating communities that care:
• 5,000 older people living in care homes - residential, nursing and specialist dementia care;
• 2,500 older people living independently in a range of purpose-built apartments and properties,
with flexible support and personalised care;
• 10,500 older people supported via Live at Home services in the community.
MHA’s services are delivered by over 7,000 dedicated staff and enhanced by the commitment of 5,500
volunteers. Sited across England, Scotland and Wales, they are embedded in their local communities and seek
to ensure residents, and those who use our services, inform their ongoing development. As a charity, MHA aims
to provide good quality services which represent excellent value for money. Its entire surplus is reinvested into
providing services for older people now and into the future.
MHA’S MISSION AND HERITAGE MHA’s mission is to improve the quality of life for older people, inspired by Christian concern. It is the reason the
charity was established in 1943 by members of the Methodist Church. Founded on Christian values of love,
compassion and respect for each individual, their faith inspired them to seek to improve the quality of life of older
people at a time before the welfare state was established.
Whilst there is now some state support for older people, society has changed significantly, and people are living
longer with increasing need for care, support and specialised accommodation to live a fulfilled life.
In fulfilling our Mission, we want MHA to become the role model for care, accommodation and support services for
older people in Britain. We are ambitious to improve and grow our services with a capital development plan to invest
in care homes, housing and community-based services.
Our aims are to:
Support older people to live later life well, nurturing mind, body and spirit
Provide quality care, accommodation and support tailored to older people’s needs
As a charity, enhance the lives of older people through chaplaincy support, volunteers, and music therapy
for people with dementia
Be the voice of older people to influence policy and society
Be the best we can be, to improve continuously and innovate in response to feedback from older people,
family members, staff members, volunteers, supporters and our regulators.
MHA’S VALUES MHA’s five values are integral to our work. MHA’s values remain consistent through time and do not vary with changes
in the political, economic or social environment. The values provide guiding principles and underpin MHA’s policies,
strategy and behaviours on a daily basis.
A
chaplaincy service is available in all our homes and retirement living schemes providing pastoral support to older
people, staff members and the relatives of our residents – for those from different faiths and none. Our chaplains
enhance the nurture of mind, body and spirit, and well-being on an individual and group basis. Regular worship
services are provided for those residents who wish to take part.
OUR GOVERNANCE MHA is the term used to describe the parent charity Methodist Homes (which used to be Methodist Homes for the
Aged until 2011) and/or the group comprising the charity together with its four subsidiaries:
Methodist Homes (MHA)
Charity (Registered Number 1083995) and Company limited by guarantee (Number 4043124)
Methodist Homes Housing Association
Registered Provider (Number LH2343) with charitable status and Industrial and Provident Society
(Number 21860R)
MHA Auchlochan.
Charity (Registered Number SC040155) and Company limited by guarantee (Number SC352117)
Silk Healthcare
Company limited by guarantee (Number 05893616).
The main Board, Methodist Homes, carries overall responsibility for all activities. There are two subsidiary Boards with
membership drawn from the main Board. The Housing Association Board watches over the particular issues relevant
to the role of MHA as a Housing Association. The Auchlochan Board is retained to identify the particular position of
Auchlochan as a company and charity within the Scottish legal system and the Scottish statutory regime. The Silk
Healthcare Board was set up in December 2016 when MHA acquired four care homes and another under
development, from another provider named Silk Healthcare.
• We respect every person as a unique individual.
• We treat others, especially the most frail and vulnerable, with the dignity we wish for
ourselves.
• We are open and fair in all our dealings.
• We always seek to improve, to become the best we can be.
• We nurture each person’s body, mind and spirit to promote a fulfilled life.
02 OUR SERVICES MHA has a track record of innovative service provision. We are ambitious about continuing to develop our care homes,
retirement living and Live at Home Community Services.
MHA’s care services are regulated and inspected by separate regulators in England, Scotland and Wales. MHA’s
affordable housing services are regulated by Homes England. MHA is one of only a few specialist providers for older
people of both housing and care services combined
CARE HOMES MHA is one of the largest charitable providers and one of the top ten care home providers for older people in the UK.
MHA has 90 care homes which are home to around 5,000 people and provides for specialist dementia care, nursing
care and residential care.
We have developed an end of life care resource and provide training to offer sensitive support to residents and
relatives as older people approach the final stages of life. Our chaplaincy team won the Third Sector Care Award in
2017 for their work on end of life care. We were one of the first to design purpose built homes for older people back
in the 1960s and continue to innovate, developing personal space, communal facilities, service delivery and assistive
technology.
100% of our care homes offer private rooms, and 90% of our care home private rooms provide en suite facilities.
With occupancy of around 91%, the average age of our residents is almost 90.
RETIREMENT LIVING We have 70 services providing self-contained apartments and properties which are home to approximately 2,500
people.
Our services have an on-site Manager, call system and a range of social and leisure facilities such as a lounge, café
bistro and hair salon. Our apartments are available for sale, part-ownership and rent and have an occupancy of 96%.
We continue to innovate, providing on-site care to meet the varying needs of older people living in our apartments
including couples where one partner has dementia, so they are able to remain living together.
LIVE AT HOME COMMUNITY SERVICES Our Live at Home Schemes are built on the work of our dedicated volunteers. Live at Home supports independent
living and social inclusion for over 10,000 older people combating loneliness and isolation. Services include
befriending, signposting to services, lunch clubs, trips, training and social activities.
DEMENTIA CARE MHA’s specialist dementia care recognises each person as a unique personality, whose spirit is undimmed, and
addresses their spiritual and physical needs and preferences, with both reassurance and highly individual support.
We take the time to find out about each person’s particular characteristics, history and preferences, even when they
are unable to communicate effectively themselves.
Our first dementia care home providing person-centred care opened in 1989. We now provide specialist dementia
care in residential and nursing care homes, resource centres and in people’s own apartments. Our specialist dementia
care has been shown by sound research and long term experience to improve well-being and continues to develop to
meet the changing needs of older people.
03 FULFILLING OUR MISSION MHA’S STAFF MEMBERS MHA was established to provide for all older people in need of accommodation, care and support.
We will live up to our mission, our values and our aims only with the right staff members. We aim to attract
and retain good people by creating well-organised, caring, inclusive and welcoming communities and by
providing above average pay and benefits and enhanced terms and conditions of employment. Our staff
members must understand and share our values, and may have any faith or none.
Staff members throughout the organisation work together to provide the best service possible and to deliver
their shared goal of improving older people’s lives and increasing their satisfaction.
FUNDING OUR WORK MHA charges fees for the majority of the services provided. Fees are set at reasonable levels and our aim
is to provide good quality services which represent good value for money, whether for older people paying
for themselves or receive State funding. As a charity, all of our surplus is reinvested into providing services
for older people now and into the future.
MHA AND FUNDRAISING We fundraise for three specific reasons:
To support our Live at Home Community Services;
To provide additional services which help to deliver a fulfilled life to all of our residents, including music
therapy in dementia care homes, and a chaplain in every care home and retirement living community, free
of charge to residents;
To enhance amenities at care homes and retirement living schemes.
