APPOINTMENT OF CHIEF EXECUTIVE APPOINTMENT BRIEF June 2018
AN INTRODUCTION King Edward VII’s Hospital is the hospital of choice for anyone seeking the best private medical treatment in
London. For more than 100 years, the Hospital has met the medical needs of its patients with consistent
clinical excellence. Located in Beaumont Street in Marylebone, it is committed to continual investment in state-
of the-art facilities and improving service provision, keeping the Hospital at the forefront of private medical
care.
King Edward VII’s Hospital’s dedication to outstanding patient care dates back to its beginnings in 1899, when
sisters Agnes and Fanny Keyser devoted themselves and their home to caring for sick and wounded officers
returning from the Second Boer War. Under Sister Agnes’ steadfast leadership, the Keyser home – continued as
a hospital for officers after the war. King Edward VII became its first patron.
These beginnings established the core values and traditions for which King Edward VII is recognised:
• Exceptional nursing care and clinical excellence;
• Traditional values based on a clearly articulated ethos which is distinctive in private sector healthcare;
• A commitment to all ranks of Service personnel, as well as their spouses;
• A spirit of philanthropy, underpinned by a network of 2,500 Friends and charitable subsidies and
grants. The Sister Agnes Benevolent Fund (now known as the Military Grants Fund) has been providing
means-tested grants for uninsured Service personnel since the early twentieth century; and
• Royal patronage, from King Edward VII in 1901 to Her Majesty The Queen today. The Duke of Kent is
the Hospital’s President.
King Edward VII’s Hospital’s new Chief Executive will build on this success, with the vision to enable substantial
growth, while piloting a way forward as the UK’s health system faces unprecedented change. This is a unique and
exciting opportunity, requiring the delivery of visible leadership and direction both internally within the Hospital
and externally within the wider health sector. The Chief Executive will be at the forefront of ensuring that King
Edward VII’s Hospital operates as an exceptional health provider, instilling a culture of pride and excitement while
leading the organisation forward, securing a strong financial future, the best of clinical care and cutting edge
facilities.
THE ORGANISATION
King Edward VII’s Hospital is a registered charity which employs 269 staff; the current organisation chart is attached
at Appendix A. There are established relationships with approximately 300 consultants (including 80 anaesthetists),
a growing population to enable the Hospital to serve greater numbers of patients. The Hospital’s governance
structures include a Council of Trustees and a Board of Governors. The Governors meet bi-annually and are
responsible for electing members of Council, Officers, the Treasurer, Auditors and Special Advisors, The Council
meets quarterly and is responsible for managing the affairs of the Hospital via the Senior Management Team.
Committees of the Council are: Medical, Ethics, Audit & Investment, Fundraising, and Governance & Nominations.
Services
King Edward VII’s Hospital offers a full range of inpatient and outpatient services across a range of specialities
provided by seasoned specialist consultants. The Hospital is proud of the very high patient to nurse ratios offered,
and excellent in-house facilities to make the patient’s stay a pleasant as well as healing one. Services are provided
within Medical and Surgical Specialities, and within General Practice, all supported by strong multidisciplinary teams.
There are eight “Centres of Excellence” established within the Hospital:
Orthopaedic
Women’s Health
General Medicine
Colorectal
Plastics
Urology
Ophthalmology
Pain & Neuroscience
The Hospital also has a 24 hour critical care unit staffed with intensive care clinicians and nurse. More information
about the Hospital’s specialities can be found on the website via this link:
http://www.kingedwardvii.co.uk/specialities/ .
Patients are either self-funding, insured or come to the Hospital via the Military Grants Fund which will cover all or
part of the patient’s costs, depending upon need. There is nearly a 50-50 split between day cases and in-patient
cases. King Edward VII’s Hospital also cares for a growing number of international patients.
Clinical staff
King Edward VII's Hospital is the only hospital in the country where consultants have to be invited to practise. This is
a source of pride and excellence that sets the Hospital apart from other private healthcare providers. The rigorous
selection process in place identifies experts who are breaking new ground in their area of healthcare.
Nurses are given regular training and development opportunities. Career development is also emphasised, and it is
a matter of pride that all the ward sisters were once staff nurses. The Hospital is committed to supporting nurses,
and provides housing for some nurses. Work is currently underway to open new staff housing located in Paddington
Basin.
Performance
Clinical performance. The last CQC inspection was a difficult one for the Hospital and its workforce, a rating of
“requires improvement” was dominated by “good” scores for the three elements of effectiveness, care, and
responsiveness, leaving governance and leadership the reason for the rating. The shortcomings outlined are being
addressed as a matter of urgency, and good progress is being made as the Hospital prepares for a new visit from
the regulator.
The patient activity over the last 12 months (to March 2018) can be summarised as follows: -
FY 17-18 FY 16-17
Admissions – Inpatient & Day Cases 4,284 4,310
Average length of stay (in nights) 3.38 3.37
Theatre cases 3,733 3,900
An important indication of satisfaction is the statistic that 98% of patients would recommend the Hospital to their
friends and family.
Financial performance. The Hospital’s income for the year ending March 2018 was £25m. This excludes
fundraising donations and legacies of £12m in FY 17-18 and £11m in FY 16-17. The Hospital has an exposure to its
defined benefit pension scheme of £1.8m, the liability for which has been decreasing year on year. There is an
expectation that there will be an EBITDA surplus of £0.3m, with revenues growing to £26.8m in FY 18-19. The aim is
to grow Hospital income to £45m in 3-5 years’ time, once the new facilities are open.
There have been 3 years of modest growth in income and patient numbers, delivered in an increasingly competitive
environment in London. Fundraising has also been an important source of income, enabling the Hospital to remain
current in its diagnostic services and other medical equipment, and to continue to improve its hotel services and
other infrastructure. Funds raised have also been central to the King Edward VII’s ability to continue to support
service personnel and veterans with the high quality care they so richly deserve.
Capital Development. In an effort to further improve care quality and to expand services, King Edward VII
Hospital’s major and exciting new building programme is now underway, due to be completed in 2020. There is a
Projects Committee chaired by Sir Stuart Lipton, a founder of Stanhope plc, and the co-founder of the property
company Chelsfield. The incoming Chief Executive will sit on this committee and will have responsibility for this
£30m capital redevelopment which will offer the platform for the Hospital’s step change in service delivery and
growth. This programme is enabling the improved positioning of already existing facilities in the current main
hospital building to improve space and working efficiency, and the expansion of surgical space. Ground has broken
on the development of the large area directly opposite the main Hospital entrance, once complete, this will provide
24 consulting rooms, offices, and a new outpatient Imaging department and additional outpatient health services.
Additionally, new nurse accommodation and a new Physiotherapy department will also be completed. This level of
improvement and increased space will help the Hospital to continue to pursue its aim to grow its services and
increase its patient numbers.
Current change, future opportunities – a new Chief Executive
Opportunities for the future, challenges ahead. The future of healthcare provision, especially in London, is becoming
increasingly competitive. Within the rapidly changing healthcare market, the incoming Chief Executive will ensure
the provision of a clear and sustainable strategic direction for the organisation. King Edward VII’s Hospital has an
outstanding reputation for care, which puts it in a positive position but not a complaisant one. While the financial
position of the organisation is stable, and the issues brought to light through the CQC inspection are being
addressed, there is a need to bring about change, financial growth and modernisation to continue to attract new
consultants and grow patient numbers. Early priorities include an upgraded IT system to enable the smooth flow of
patient, financial and clinical information around the Hospital. Emphasis on marketing – across general practice,
with the population directly, and across new and busy consultants – is a priority to deliver stability through growth.
Patient expectations of care provision continue to evolve, and this requires the confidence to innovate in how
services might be offered differently to meet these expectations, as part of the Hospital’s growth strategy. While
there are currently 8 Centres of Excellence, there is room for the development of others that will stimulate new
membership of the consultant body. Additionally, the new capital development will bring positive change, but there
will inevitably be a period of upheaval as “business as usual” is observed while services shift to new locations over
the next 18 months.
This is a Hospital with a proud history and a fantastic reputation; it is in a position to leap forward positively with the
development of new facilities that is already underway. This is an excellent time to search for a new Chief Executive
who will help the organisation to modernise to grow, and achieve its ambitions with energy and enthusiasm.
THE ROLE PURPOSE OF POST King Edward Vll Hospital is a renowned private, acute charitable hospital in the heart of London with a reputation for
providing the highest standards of hospital and patient services. The Hospital is undertaking significant
development and embracing ambitious change, and now requires a skilled Chief Executive to bring visible and
inspirational leadership, drive and ambition to King Edward VII’s Hospital. The complexity and importance of this
role cannot be underestimated: King Edward VII’s new Chief Executive will need to understand quickly the
organisation’s key stakeholders, positioning the organisation for growth, and ensuring a focus on excellence and
innovation in everything King Edward VII does. The smooth transfer of services across the newly developed hospital
will be an early but important priority; longer term, the new Chief Executive will oversee growth and impact across
London’s healthcare market.
The principal responsibility is to ensure that the Hospital continues to provide high quality services that are clinically
sound and safe to increasing numbers of patients by staff who are valued and motivated. Clarity of purpose and

effective marketing in order to attract a wider patient population. Working with a strong Senior Management Team
and to a dedicated Council of Trustees, the new Chief Executive will build and maintain a shared vision of the
strategic aims, values and culture of the Hospital.
