OWING to the recent prosecutions of tradespeople forselling pepper adulterated with pepperette it is announcedthat the manufacture of this substance at Leghorn has been.discontinued, and that its importation in England has ceased.AT the recent annual meeting of the governors of
the Blackburn and East Lancashire Infirmary it was decidednot to alter the rule which prohibits the election of a j juniorhouse-surgeon to the institution.
THE ANTHRAX EPIDEMIC. - Mr. Whisken, theveterinary surgeon who made the post-mortem examinationof the diseased cattle at Chignal, lies in a dangerous con-dition in Chelmsford Hospital. Two butchers also are
seported to be suffering, and the horse which drew thecarcases has died.
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL.-Lady Jessel hasrecently paid into the bankers of this hospital a donation of.E2000 for the permanent endowment of a bed in theinstitution to be called the "George Jessel" bed. TheRight Hon. G. J. Goschen, M.P., has consented to preside atthe festival dinner in aid of the funds of the charity to beheld on April 27th.THE BRITISH MEDICAL TEMPERANCE ASSOCIATION.-
This Association held a meeting in the rooms of the Medical’Society of London on the 18th inst. Dr. Walter Pearce,B Sc., read a paper on the Absolute and DifferentialDiagnosis of Alcoholic Paralysis. In the discussion whichfollowed, Dr. Richardson called attention to the fact thatin past times cases of alcoholic paralysis had often beenregarded as lead poisoning. He considered that the changewhich took place in the nervous system, as the cause of thesymptoms must be of the nature of pectous change ofthe fluid nerve substance or of the membranous expansesleading to imperfect dialysis. Dr. Norman Kerr then calledattention to the very great decrease of the amount ofalcohol consumed in workhouses. He considered that therewas still room for a greater reduction. In the discussionwhich followed Drs. Hall, Drysdale, Gray, Ridge, and otherstook part.
