COMMENT
[email protected] SALVATIONIST 2 April 2011 3
INSTINCT already tells me thatColonel David Jeffrey, USA NationalChief Secretary, is someoneI would refer to as a giving person.
I met the colonel for the very first timeat International Headquarters, when I was there last month on a kind of dayrelease for reasonable behaviour. I complimented him on his unusualArmy tie, which he promptly gave tome to keep (we swapped neckwear, there and then). I have rarely been soimpressed by instant, carefreeopen-handedness.
On balance, I tend to prefer beingaround people who give. There isinvariably a certain warmth andamiability to be found in the companyof those who have discovered thehappy art of holding their wealth, possessions, ties, talents and abilities
only lightly. I mean those people whoseem to be naturally fluent in thelanguage of generosity and can easilydisperse their expertise, theirhospitality, their laughter, their timeand so on.
This week’s edition of Salvationistmight well have been produced underthe working title of Giving. We canread about officers who have giventheir all, about Army people who aregiving, and have given, their lives toChrist.
We can even read about whatReliance Bank has to give itscustomers! Not forgetting that thisedition coincides with General LindaBond’s first day in office. She, weknow, will give everything she has asour new leader.
Someone once said that while it ispossible to give without loving, it isimpossible to love without giving. Weneed only read John 3:16 and thepages of this week’s paper forevidence of that.
Speaking of John 3:16, I have beenlistening to We Preach Christ, thelatest CD by Govan Songsters. I loveit, especially ‘Divine Right’ with itsbeautiful words: ‘Christ has the right, the right of love; love whichdemands the whole. Dear Lord, I givewithout reserve, my heart, my life, mysoul.’
It is, as ever, a privilege to receivethe ministry of Govan Songsters, buttheir songs also often carry anuncomfortable challenge. To ‘givewithout reserve’ is no meanundertaking. Yet, as Richard Slaterreminds us in song 475 in oursongbook, and as indeed the churchin Laodicea discovered in Revelation3, this appears to be the divine dealon offer: his all for ours, the templatefor giving having been drawn up incrimson some 2,000 years ago.
What sort of response we give isentirely up to us.
MAJOR STEPHEN POXON, EDITOR
And not tocount thecost
‘Since I began to follow,Men have been robbing meLeft, right and centre;Taken my time, my strength,My wit, my warmth, myself! They snatched my sympathy,My pity, yes, my love,And ran!And left me emptied, poor.I’ll put a stop to that!I’ll not be robbed again,Not I!Now I will GIVE my heart,My love, myself.I can’t be robbedOf what I gladly give!’ (General John Gowans)

Youth bandbrings in £1,000 for hospitalSouthseaTHE Southern Divisional YouthBand presented a scintillatingand exciting festival to a packedhall, raising just over £1,000 forthe Intensive Care Unit at QueenAlexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.Songster Anita Green, who hadbeen a long-term patient in theunit in 2008, organised the eventand Sister Sandra Taylor wasthere representing the hospital.
Sue Blyth (Gainsborough)was the vocal soloist and AndrewBlyth (THQ) compèred theprogramme and brought a Biblemessage.
The 46-strong band began the evening in fine style with‘Ein Feste Burg’ and ‘Shekinah’and also delighted the con-gregation with the Britishpremiere of ‘Stand Up, StandUp’ (Paul Drury). The marchhad been written specially
for the band to play at the Rose Bowl Parade during itsDecember 2010 California tour.
As well as singing, Sue testi-fied to being the only Christianwhere she works and howfollowing Jesus has been hersaving grace when she is chal-
lenged. Her final song, ‘ThroughIt All I Choose To Serve The Saviour’, encapsulated her testimony.

Salvation Armylaunches freshearthquakeinitiativesNew ZealandAS part of its continuing supportfor earthquake-hit residents inChristchurch, The SalvationArmy is distributing 4,000 CareCards, each loaded withNZ$500, to affected households. The project was developed inpartnership with Westpac Bank.
The use of the Care Card is atthe discretion of recipients, butcan be put towards the cost ofurgent house repairs or topurchase food, clothing or othergoods, says Salvation ArmyPublic Relations Secretary MajorRobbie Ross. Cards are limitedto one per household.
Payments and grants are avail-able from a range of organisa-tions but Salvation Armyworkers report high levels ofearthquake-related unemploy -ment and material hardshipexperienced by families, as wellas a substantial degree of anxietyabout their futures.
Money for the Care Cardscomes from The SalvationArmy’s Canterbury EarthquakeAppeal, which as at 14 Marchstood at $9.36 million ($5.25million banked, the remainder incollections and pledges).
The Salvation Army has alsoreleased a Take A Break schemeaimed at giving individuals andfamilies suffering significant
emotional stress a break awayfrom the city. Help with travel, accommodation and costs willbe provided to eligible people.
Major Ross says the need forthe scheme has become increas-ingly evident over the past week.‘While our people are seeingmany examples of strong com -munity spirit, there is clearevidence that some residents inthe hardest-hit sub urbs are now nearing the end of theiremotional endurance limits.’
The Army still has more than100 care workers visiting theworst-affected suburbs to assessresidents’ emotional and mate-rial needs, with other personnelfollowing up more complexcases and teams of volunteersdelivering food, water, clothingand bedding to those who needthem. Another team of volun-teers has been providing supportto the families of those still listedas missing. The bulk of rein-
forcement staff – from aroundthe country and Australia – areoperating in Monday to Fridayshifts, with a smaller staff onweekend duty.
The Army’s Linwood Centreis providing around 800 foodparcels a day and other goods, aswell as food, fuel and clothingvouchers.
Salvation Army communityworker Brent Christoffersen waspart of the second wave of rein- forcement personnel de ployed toChristchurch. He says: ‘I wasreally blasé about the Christ -church earthquake at first. I didcare, but there was other stuffgoing on for me. Then our corps– Hutt City in Wellington – heldan urgent prayer meeting. I wenthome from that, watched TV andsaid to a mate, “Let’s go, wehave to do something!” I reallywanted to get down there once Isaw how bad it was.
‘Most people were just so
pleased to see The SalvationArmy. I explained that we weredoing brief assessments to findout what people needed and thatother people with us wouldcheck that their houses were safeto live in. Some people wouldsay, “We’re fine,” but others said,“It’s so good to see you here –you’re the first people to comearound.”
‘I took bottles of water to a guyin a wheelchair who couldn’tleave his house. I visited awoman in her 70s, and therewere blankets under her diningroom table – that was where shewas sleeping. Another olderwoman who was on oxygen wasreally scared in case her powerstopped. I asked her neighbour tokeep an eye on her. One womansaid that every time a truck wentby her house it was like anotherearthquake. Her nerves wereshot.
‘The welfare of people’s headsand emotional state is going tobe a key need now. A guy toldme he’d seen a building withthree workers on it, and when theearthquake happened, the build-ing just exploded on them. Theygot out, but those memories arethere for that guy and they won’tever go away. I think The Salva-tion Army needs to keep oncaring, especially with coun-selling and support.
‘We can’t neglect our peopleand our communities. We’re notthe biggest country in the world, but we’ve got enough people to get down there and help.’ – C. T.

 Why give to
Pakistan andAfrica?TWO of our Partners in Mission are
Pakistan and Mozambique. As
Chairman of Churches Together in
Reading, I move among a wide range
of Christian people, and also meet
many non-believers near where I live.
Both groups are beginning to express
the same sentiments about giving to
such places as Pakistan and Africa.
With respect to Pakistan, commentsgo along the lines of: Why should wecontinue to give to a country likePakistan? Some years ago the leader ofthe Army there was murdered. Theytrump up charges under their blasphemylaw against ordinary Christians. Theymurdered a Muslim politician who wantedto change that law. And recently theyassassinated their only Christian MP. Arethere not more worthy countries?
With respect to Africa I hear: Look at allthe money we have given to Africa overthe years, and it seems to make little orno difference! And as for any Christianinfluence, Mozambique has more than amillion people with Aids. If the Christiangospel was influential in that country, andother African countries, people would
modify their lifestyle and Aids would start todecrease rather than continue to increase!
I know how I answer such comments, but perhaps such issues should beaddressed in the pages of Salvationist, asthere are probably readers who have comeacross such reservations.Michael Penny,Reading
Good corpsofficers are ablessingAS we once again face the period of
uncertainty as many Salvation Army
officers are contemplating new
pastures, we uphold them in prayer
believing that God’s hand is upon the
decisions that take them away from
where they have been so well used
for the Kingdom.
For many it is a time of questioning:Have they been responsible for growth ofthe body of Christ? Have they beeneffective as leaders? Jesus understoodthis when he used the graphic picture of afarmer to explain the manner in which theKingdom of God grows (see Mark4:26–29). Once the farmer plants the
Bewarechanging themeaning ofScriptureWITH regard to the correspondence
about Major Leanne Ruthven’s
suggestion (Salvationist 26
February) that we should change the
words we use in order to make our
language more inclusive, I’m
prompted to make the following
comments.
As far as our songs are concerned ithas to be a matter for the Army and thecopyright owners to decide what is rightand proper.
However, I don’t feel we have theauthority to change the words ofScripture in order to accommodatepolitical correctness. The Bible is theholy word of God and changing thetranslation corrupts its authenticity.
When Paul describes Christians as sons of God he does so from aJewish perspective. A daughter receivesfrom her father a dowry only, whereas ason inherits everything his fatherpossesses. Paul further states that inChrist there is neither male nor female, thus identifying women as sons of Godand therefore inheritors of all our Fatheroffers.
Corrupting the translation by callingChristians children of God risks dilutingthe meaning of the words. Trevor Lynes,Major,Lowestoft
seed, it grows by itself. Although fruitcomes through the miracle created withinthe seed, the farmer has to work hard toprepare the ground for productivity.
And so it is with church growth. Theapostle Paul explained that he hadplanted churches, Apollos had watered, but it was God who gave the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6). But if our officers areto be either the sower or nourisher of theKingdom’s future how will this be possibleif our most effective leaders arecontinually redirected into divisional andterritorial roles?
I think it is important to protect frontlineministry that focuses on discipleship, delegation and relationships to empowersoldiers to attain their spiritual goals.Salvationists need to be effectively led tocollectively establish goals for their corpsand communities.Graham White,Newtownards
Communitybands are great!I CAN wholeheartedly support
community bands as, in our corps at
Keighley, our community band gives
stalwart service.
These musicians have participated inopen-air meetings in the town, supportedvarious charities, played for memorialservices, at nursing homes, on the localsteam trains and at Christmas time; theirworkload is truly amazing!
They have also played for meetings atother corps, including Rutherglen,Halifax, Brighouse and Wakefield.
They regularly attend our ThirdSunday morning meeting and ourmonthly Songs of Praise meeting.
Not only are the community bandmembers themselves hearing thegospel but also – particularly with regardto the Songs of Praise events –attracting many other people to join us.
Surely, this is a win-win situation!Elsie Mortimer,Keighley

RELIANCE BANK FEATURE
THE financial crises of recenttimes have involved many of thehigh street banks. This, coupledwith news of bankers being
rewarded with substantial bonuses, hasreduced public confidence in thebanking system.
But not all banks operate in this way.Reliance Bank Limited (RB) is owned
by The Salvation Army through itscontrolling shareholders – The SalvationArmy International Trustee Company. RBis an ethical bank headed up byManaging Director Trevor Smith.
At least 75 per cent of the bank’staxable profits are paid by means of GiftAid to the Trustee Company for theongoing work of The Salvation Army. Inrecent times some people disillusionedwith high street banks have chosen toopen accounts with RB. During the pastyear this resulted in a 5 per cent increase incurrent accounts, a45 per cent increase inchildren’s accounts anda massive 250 per centincrease in cash ISAs.
In acknowledging the benefits of RBto the Army, the trustees encouragedthe bank to adopt the slogan ‘Keep it inthe family’ with the aim of encouraging
Salvationists and people linked with theArmy to use the bank’s financial servicesbecause of the associated benefitswhich include: Internet banking with a full range ofpersonal banking services, includingcurrent and savings accounts, mortgages, personal loans andcompetitive interest rates The choice to pay in and withdrawmoney through a high street bank Christian ethical banking with aresponsible lending policy All allowable profits Gift Aided to theArmy.
In 2010 RB commissioned anindependent survey for Salvation Armystaff and account holders. Thequestionnaire, which was madeavailable online and by post, received anaverage response. It not only covered
bank services but alsocreated a demographicpicture of RBcustomers – 76 percent of whom wereSalvationist readers.
The findings of the survey presentedthe following conclusions: Existing customers are satisfied withthe service provided and opportunitiesto improve it further including launching
a credit card, reviewing opening hoursand engaging with customers beyondday-to-day transactions A proportion of staff already usesome of the services provided by the bank. However, there is anopportunity to increase this further byaddressing some of the perceptionsheld The main barrier to consideringReliance Bank is a perception ofinaccessibility that comes from nothaving high street branches The most important factors for personal banking are a brand name that creates trust, online services, competitive interest rates and ease of use when paying in money RB is considered suitable forpersonal banking although opinions aremixed on how the services areperceived in comparison with highstreet banks Strong Christian ethics and a highproportion of profits used for charitablepurposes are the main strengths andbrand differentiators of RB Staff are aware of the RB name butdo not have a clear view of what thebrand stands for and what it offers tocustomers. Awareness of the brand isfar higher among longstanding staff More than half of respondents areunaware that they can pay into an RBaccount using high street banks.
As a result of the survey findings RBis considering variousrecommendations to improve itscommunication with existing customersas well as finding ways to attract newcustomers. These include addressingperceptions of inaccessibility bycommunicating, online services, telebanking, paying in at other banksand making people aware that RBcards and cheques are universallyaccepted.
The bank is preparing for the removalof cheques in 2018 and is looking atways to assist its customers with thischange by encouraging the use ofelectronic payments that are moreefficient and secure.

ROOTS UPDATE
SALVATIONIST 2 April 2011 9
SUNG worship has alwaysplayed a significant part inthe whole Roots experienceand I am delighted that
Noel Richards is returning to lead us inthis. Noel has been part of the UKChristian music scene for more than 35 years and has written many worshipsongs. Perhaps the best known of theseis ‘All Heaven Declares’, which heco-wrote with his wife Tricia. He hasplayed and led worship eventsworldwide. He was a key organiser ofChampion Of The World in June 1997when 45,000 people gathered forworship at Wembley Stadium. He is alsocommitted to working with churchesand encouraging worshippers andsongwriters.
We met up with Noel and found outmore…
You are now living in Majorca. Why
have you moved there and what are
you doing these days?
Tricia and I moved out there with a smallgroup of friends. We believe that this isthe place where God wants us to live outthe gospel and make a difference in thecommunity. We have deliberatelyavoided the expat area and are based inthe Spanish-speaking community. We
are committed to learning the language, building friendships and seeing whatGod will do through us over the comingyears.
Are you still leading worship at
international events?
Spain is our main focus and beingavailable to serve God here. However,we are singers and songwriters, withopportunities to travel off the island toother places, and we still feel that this isan important part of our work. This year,I have already been to Ireland andGermany and have events planned inthe UK, Canada, Switzerland and Spain. The international work focuses onconcerts and leading and teachingworship.
What inspires you about today’s
worship songs?
All kinds of songs can inspire me. I amgrateful for the hymnology we have, whether old songs or new. These songsencourage us, help us to understandGod’s heart and give us hope for thejourney we are on. However, I think thatwe are reaching saturation level withworship songs right now. It seems thatthe only songwriting that is beingpromoted is that for the Church. We
need to encourage great writing for theworld to hear.
At Roots we will be looking at how
the arts shaped the Bible. What role
do you think music plays in
Scripture?
There is a whole book dedicated tosongs and singing and there are loads of musical references in Scripture. However, I am not sure that the artsshaped the Bible. Rather, I think that theBible has helped to shape the arts. Manyof the great musical compositions havefound their roots in Scripture and God’screation. God is a musician; there ismusic in the sound of the wind and thewaves crashing on the shore. To be intouch with the Creator is to be inspired. The Bible talks about a God who caresabout the whole world and inspirespeople to seek him. Our art shouldtherefore reflect that.
How do you think that Scripture has
shaped your songwriting?
Many writers have drawn on Scripturefor their lyrics, myself included. I recentlywrote a song of blessing where I tookNumbers 6:24–26 and set it to music.I will often take my song ideas and seehow they marry up to the measuring rodof Scripture. I want my songs to pointpeople towards the Creator, so I amendeavouring to use good theology as asignpost.

16 2 April 2011 SALVATIONIST
BIBLE STUDY
ON the night before he died
Jesus said something ratherstrange to his friends: ‘It is to
your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate willnot come to you; but if I go, I will sendhim to you’ (John 16:7 all quotations fromNew Revised Standard Version).
Jesus is speaking about the Holy Spirit(also see John 14:26 and 16:13).
‘Advocate’ is one of several wordsused to translate the Greek wordparaclete. This legal term refers tosomeone who speaks on behalf ofanother, also sometimes translated as‘comforter’ – suggesting one who caresfor and supports another.
Jesus is making two crucial points: theHoly Spirit cannot come until he ascendsinto Heaven, and will be an active powerin the disciples’ lives.
The Holy Spirit of Jesus cannot begiven until Jesus has departed. AndJesus cannot depart until his mission iscomplete. Therefore, the ascension of
Jesus should not be seen in terms ofabsence, but of presence; not departure, but arrival; the completion of God’sreconciling work in Christ.
In a wonderful exchange, the HolySpirit arrives on earth so that thepresence of Jesus is no longer limited bytime and space. Through his Spirit, Jesuscan give himself both equally andimmediately to all believers – including us.It is through the power of this outpouringthat the mission of God’s Church reallybegins.
THE GIFT OF THE SPIRIT
In John’s Gospel, this happens on EasterDay. After hearing Jesus’ words ofcommission (20:21) the disciples musthave wondered how they could possiblydo this. The answer is by the power of theHoly Spirit, which they are given thereand then (20:22). This gift is closelybound up with the giving of authority tocontinue the ministry of Jesus (20:23).
In Luke’s Gospel, the disciples are told
to stay in Jerusalem (24:49), where theactual giving of the Spirit comes on theFeast of Pentecost (Acts 2:1–13). Here, the Spirit is about continuing the ministryof Jesus. The disciples speak in manydifferent languages; the word of God cannow be heard everywhere.
THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
There is an unpredictability to the Spirit.Like the risen Christ himself, God’s Spiritcannot be pinned down. That’s why theSpirit is depicted in different images – adove, water, wind and fire.
The New Testament’s consistentteaching is that the Spirit will be known bythe fruit produced in human lives, listedby Paul in Galatians 5:22 and 23. But Idon’t believe this list is intended to beexhaustive. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit ofJesus – manifesting himself in differentways, in different people, at differenttimes, into new truths and towards newchallenges. And in every situation, theSpirit will be fruitful in our lives in newways.
THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT
A good tree bears good fruit. Over time, the fruit of the Spirit grows from theceaseless activity of the Holy Spirit in ourlives. Paul encourages its more dramaticgifts (1 Corinthians 14:1–5), but insiststhat whatever languages we speak –human or divine – the greatest gifts willalways be faith, hope and love (1Corinthians 13:13).
THE SPIRIT IN THE CHURCH TODAY
Jesus bequeaths his Spirit to his Church;the gift that unlocks and animates allother gifts. Without it, there could be noChurch and no mission. But it is vitallyimportant to realise that the same HolySpirit is just as available to us today. It’snot as if Jesus gave such a huge dose ofthe Spirit to his first disciples that there’snot much left for us now!
We may not be very ready to receivethe Spirit, or expectant of what he can doin our lives, but the Spirit still wants tomake Jesus known and grow beautifulfruit in our lives; and God the Father stillwants to pour his Spirit onto his Church, and pour a Spirit-filled Church into theworld.
The New Testament makes adistinction between the fruit of the Spiritand the gifts of the Spirit. God wants togrow every single one of the fruits of theSpirit in every life.

QUOTEAs officers, my husband and I faced a life of obedience tofarewell orders. If I tried to reckon up how many of these suddenimpingements of authority over my pathway brought pleasure, then the score is nearly down to zero. Yet in every appointment inthe eight lands in which we served there was some compensation.
Flora Larsson writing in Just A Year, Lord
THOUGHTSix pages of this edition of Salvationist are dedicated to officersserving in the United Kingdom Territory with the Republic ofIreland and British officers serving overseas or at IHQ. Many ofthem are facing changes as they move to new appointments andthese changes will bring them fresh challenges. Many areremaining in their present appointments, coping with ongoingchallenges and constantly uncovering new ones.
However, change and challenge are not the sole province ofofficers. Every Christian faces challenges and changes, whereverhe or she is. They come as part of the journey that Christiansundertake when they follow Jesus.
Jesus told his followers: ‘In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world’ (John 16:33 NewInternational Version).
Troubles come in all shapes and sizes – finances, relationships, jobs, redundancy, bereavement – but, through it all, followers ofChrist can have the assurance that Jesus will never leave themnor forsake them.
And not every change or challenge is negative – there are thenew beginnings which come with moving house, marriage, thearrival of a baby, making a new friend, becoming a Christian, finding a spiritual home. Jesus shares in the joyous times too.
SONGAs the varied way of life we journey,Come the plains and then the mountainside,Come the days of joy when birds are singing,And the world is fair and sweet and wide; Then a deeper joy comes, overfilling,From the everlasting throne of love,And all other joy is but an echoFrom the ever-blessèd heights above.
There are shadows on the earthly pathwayWhere, at times uncertainly, we tread; In perplexity we halt and lingerTill our faith again is upward led.For the heights of truth are ever calling,And celestial radiance from afarOn our pilgrim way is gently fallingFor our comfort where the shadows are.
In the days of peace and golden sunshine,In the days of joy, or days of woe,There is confidence in him who holds us;There is light to guide us here below. And beyond await the heights of raptureWhere all earthly joys, transcended, fadeIn the glory of the Saviour’s presence,In the home eternal he has made.
Lily Sampson (SASB 711)
