Pres iden t ’ s Corner

Dear Fellow Staff Members,

This year and those to come will be

critical to the existence and success of SC

State University and I ask that we, the

staff continue to provide superior

customer service to students, parents,

stakeholders and one another. Continue

to be team players, continue to make a

positive difference, continue to be an

advocate for “right” and not be ashamed

to ask for help if needed in any area or

task that you are faced with on a daily

basis.

SC State University can prosper or suffer from the public’s perceived image. Customer service is at the heart of this. Superior customer service is an essential management standard that is the new battlefield in the competitive higher education environment. Prestige, image, social, moral, and ethical responsibility, and financial viability are just a few of the reasons why customer service is important to higher education. I challenge you all to define your standards by asking yourselves: Why are the services we (SC State) offer of value (in essence why

are we here and why are we doing this in the first place) The emotional response we’re aiming to have the customer feel The expected and effective way to accomplish these services This year’s theme for Freshman Arrival was “Today’s Visionaries,

Tomorrow’s Leaders.” So I ask, What does your vision look like and are

you preparing our students to become great leaders for tomorrow?

Every goal mentioned and those that are forthcoming can only be

obtained through the commitment of the entire bulldog family so let’s

make this year a stellar year!

The change, culture, beginning and end begins with us. Have a great

school year!

Beverly is a diligent and committed worker when it comes to her career as well as in her community service efforts, which speaks volumes about her character and tenacity.

Beverly was nominated by Mr. Carl Oliver and this is what he had to say about her, “In my most honest opinion, I believe that Mrs. Beverly Green has the high moral character and strong resolve. For the time that I have known Mrs. Green, I can say without prejudice that she is one of the most intuitive, respectful and upright woman that I have met in my career here at SC State University. I feel that she will be an excellent candidate for the 2015 Outstanding Staff of the Year.”

Mr. Paul A. Bryant, Athletics Director If you have not had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Paul A. Bryant, let me just tell you that he is a joy to be around; once you get over the height and stature of this gentle giant.

I can remember the first time I had the pleasure of meeting him and all I could think of walking away was, “he’s cool!”

Paul came in with his infectious smile and hit the ground running and with that I knew that SCSU Athletics would never be the same and after reading a recent article published by his alma mater, Alaska Pacific University entitled, “Let me tell you what a small school can do for you…” it was confirmed that we had a great AD.

Paul was born in Dayton, Ohio to ministers and is the oldest of 11; no wonder he has a humble spirit and patience. He is the father of Kayla and Paul Jr. and has been married 26 years to Shannon Bryant.

Paul is a graduate of Alaska Pacific University and holds a Bachelor of Arts, Masters of Education

from Urbana University and is pursuing his Ph. D in Higher Education at Northcentral University. He is a member of the National Association of College Director of Athletics, Minority Opportunities Athletics Association, and Emerging Athletic Leaders and enjoys basketball, riding motorcycles, reading inspirational books, and his guilty pleasure is being an avid fan of the Young and the Restless.

During an interview with Lynn E. Paulson, (http://www.alaskapacific.edu/stories/let-me-tell-you-what-a-small-school-can-do-for-you/) Paul stated, “The greatest acknowledgement I ever receive is when former athletes or group home kids contact me. They still call me ‘Coach’ or ‘Mr. Paul.’ They respected me and I made a difference in their lives.”

I now understand why he lives by the motto, “Eliminate the distractions and focus on the possibilities!” You have taken the University, the state of SCSU Athletics, the athletes, students, and Alumni by storm! I guess the old saying, “If you can’t hang with the big dogs, stay on the porch will never apply to you.”

Thank you for coming off the porch and bringing your compassion, knowledge, integrity, and smile to Bulldog Country!

Welcome back to South Carolina State University! I trust that your year is

off to a productive start. I would like to personally thank you for all that

you do for SC State. The daily tasks you perform and the many sacrifices

you make contribute to the successful operation of the University. No one

is insignificant or no task too small. All aspects of the University work

together to harvest a cohesive and effective institution.

Last semester, we were met with several challenges; however, we have

worked diligently to address those challenges and start afresh. We have

revisited our core values and going forward, they will be the basis for all

that we do. Opportunity, Service, Philanthropy, Collaboration and

Excellence – also referenced as “O’SPICE.” We are who we are and we

do what we do well!

This semester, not only did we meet our enrollment target but we exceeded

the target. We are certainly proud of the fact that our enrollment

declination trend is reversing. The increase in enrollment signifies restored confidence in the institution. The

work the staff and faculty provided for move-in day to assist students and their families was very well

executed. There is no perfect or faultless process, however you provided an outstanding job and for that, I am

grateful.

Just as important as increasing the enrollment is the ability to retain the students we all worked so hard to bring

to the campus. This brings me to a very key and crucial point. As mentioned in my State of the University

Address during the opening session, customer service is not an option at SC State University, it is a

requirement. It is so important that we treat our customers with dignity and respect, we make processes more

efficient and we work to eliminate obstacles and barriers that cause our customers more concern than

necessary. I know you will continue to smile, be responsive, be kind, be helpful and most of all, be effective.

Last month, the President’s Cabinet came together for a day of planning. There were many points of

discussions on how to make an even better SC State University. As we explored Strengths, Weaknesses,

Opportunities and Threats, we found some common fabric running through SC

State. We emerged with core values as well as our new tagline which is Transforming Lives. Inspiring

Greatness. We ask that you use this tagline with everything that you do. Because we are here every day, it

is clear to us who we are and what we do. It is now time to share those positives aspects with the lager

community. No more will we feed into perception, no more will we allow others to tell our story.

I cannot share enough how much I appreciate you. Thank you for your support, thank you for your

understanding, thank you for patience and in the end, SC State will be a better University than it is today. Continue to work hard for students because their success is our reward. Have a great year!

Respectfully,

W. Franklin Evans , Ph.D

Speak and Smile

As we are welcoming new students and their parents to campus this school year, let’s continue to work together to present a friendly campus. Enrollment drives our financial well-being, so we must do all we can to make every student (and parent) we encounter want to attend and remain at SC State. A friendly environment makes students more likely to want to enroll, feel at home, and remain a bulldog.

Speak. Greet everyone you encounter entering your work space, in the parking lot, on the way to the post office, in line at the bookstore - everywhere. Say “Good morning,” “Good afternoon,” “Welcome to SC State,” “Have a nice day” - anything pleasant and friendly. Make your tone warm and enthusiastic, and your body language open and positive. A friendly greeting tells our potential and returning customers that we are glad they are here.

Smile. Smiles are tangible and catchy. When you smile at someone, their natural tendency is to smile back, perhaps feeling a little brighter. A warm smile makes it easier for customers to approach you, and conveys trust. It is difficult to be in a bad mood when you smile; so your beautiful smile not only lifts those who see it, but it cheers you up, too.

A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks. ~Charles Gordy
