Involving Parents At PETA, we believe it’s important that parents have the opportunity to be involved in the decisions being made by young people when leaving school or college and we recognise how difficult it is to keep up with all the options that are available. That’s why we have introduced a Parents briefing which will explain the options available, provide an opportunity to ask questions and understand the pitfalls to watch out for.To book simply contact the Recruitment Team with your chosen date from the planner.

We both started at PETA on a Pre-Apprenticeship course in September

2011 and within a couple of weeks were put forward for an interview at

Di-Spark in Horndean. We thought that there was only one Apprenticeship

available and were surprised and delighted when we were both offered

a position. By October we had progressed from the Pre-Apprenticeship to

the Apprenticeship programme and started at the company. Di-Spark is a

great company to work for – they are supportive of their staff

and have excellent, modern machinery. The range of

products that they make, from parts for Apache helicopters to parts for

satellites, is fantastic. As part of the Apprenticeship we attend PETA

Havant Engineering Training Centre once a week where we are learning

the basic principles of engineering, which we are then able to put

into practice back in the workplace. At Havant we receive excellent

support from all the staff, which means that we can progress at our

own pace and achieve our qualifi cations. We also receive support

from our assessor who visits us regularly in the workplace. The

best thing about this programme is that it is a practical, ‘hands on’

course; we don’t spend too much time in the classroom. It’s a great way

to learn and earn at the same time – much better than being at college.

Raising the Participation Age(RPA) From summer 2013, the Government changed the law so that all young people in England will have to continue in education or training until their 18th birthday. This does not necessarily mean that you have to stay in school, and there are a number of options that you can choose:

● Study full-time such as in a school, college or with a training provider; ● Full-time work or volunteering combined with part-time education or training; ● An Apprenticeship/Traineeship (www.apprenticeships.org.uk).

All the full time courses, Apprenticeships and Traineeships offered at PETA meet the RPA requirements

Choosing the right programme

Apprenticeships Our Apprenticeships offer a great opportunity for those that want to get themselves into a career of their choice. Not only will you be gaining qualifications, as you would if you went to College or University but you also get paid and gain real work experience by doing a real job. Learning is done mainly on the job, where you will learn from experienced people who have been doing the job for some time. This is supported with day or block release to one of our training centres to refine your skills and develop your theory knowledge. On completion of your Apprenticeship you will receive a number of accredited qualifications and also an Apprenticeship completion certificate. Whilst the majority of Apprentices remain with their employer at the end of their Apprenticeship there is still the opportunity to progress onto the next level or to University. For more information on entry requirements, course content and progression opportunities look at our range of Apprenticeships on page 14.

Full Time Courses Our full time courses are ideal for those that are not quite ready to enter the world of work and would benefit from a bit more time developing the skills and confidence they will need to move into a job. Delivered in one of our training centres you will study with us for between 12 to 14 hours

Choosing the right course for you is a big decision and one that we are here to help you with. The team at PETA are always willing to discuss your options to help you get that all important decision right.

per week over an academic year. During your time with us you will get holidays and breaks the same as you would if you were at College. Learning is through practical work related activities and group and project work. As well as classroom work, you will undertake work experience and have the opportunity to take part in trips and visits to look at how businesses in your chosen industry operate. All our courses are accredited and on successful completion you will receive a recognised qualification such as a BTEC or City & Guilds. Once you have completed your full time course you will be able to progress on to further study at a higher level, employment, Apprenticeship or University. For more information on entry requirements, course content and progression opportunities look at our range of full time courses on page 20.

Traineeships Traineeships are designed to help you get an Apprenticeship or a job. Our programmes last around six months and enables 16 to 19 year olds to develop the skills and workplace experience that our employers demand. PETA Traineeships give post-GCSE learners the flexible training and real work experience they need to compete for Apprenticeships and good jobs. You will emerge better equipped and more attractive to employers. For more information on Traineeships, see page 56.

Whether you have just left school, thinking of leaving college or simply want to get a job then an Apprenticeship is the perfect choice.

An Apprenticeship involves on-the-job instruction and off-the-job training at one of our training centres with support throughout. What’s more an Apprenticeship is not just a single qualification. Apprenticeships

Intermediate Level ApprenticeshipsIntermediate level Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifi cations at Level 2 including a competence and knowledge based qualifi cation such as Certifi cate or Diploma and Functional Skills. The Intermediate Apprenticeship is equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grade A* - C.

Advanced Level Apprenticeships Advanced level Apprentices will be employed in more technical and complex roles and work towards work-based learning qualifi cations at Level 3 including a competence and knowledge based qualifi cation such as a National Certifi cate and Functional Skills. The Advanced Apprenticeship is equivalent to 2 A Level passes.

Higher Apprenticeships Higher level Apprentices will be employed in technical or complex roles and on a route to professional status or a senior role within the organisation. They will work towards work-based learning qualifi cations at Level 4 including a competence-based qualifi cation, Functional Skills and, in some cases, a knowledge-based qualifi cation such as a Higher National Certifi cate or Foundation Degree.

Apprenticeships are delivered at three levels:

Page 16: Apprenticeships, Traineeships and Full-Time Course Guide 2015 / … · 2014-09-23 · Business Business Overview Page 23 Courses BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Business Page 24 BTEC Level

16

Choosing the right level:

The Level of Apprenticeship you start on will be determined in the main by the job role and the employer’s requirements. But whichever level you start on there will be plenty of opportunity to progress to the next level. Your career doesn’t have to stop at the Intermediate, Advanced or Higher Level Apprenticeship, if you want to go on to University you will fi nd that many institutes of Higher Education value your skills and knowledge and will happily offer you a place on a Foundation Degree or other higher level qualifi cations.

Apprenticeships can be demanding and can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of Apprenticeship, the Apprentice’s ability and the industry sector. Apprenticeships are very rewarding because they train you in the skills employers want, and give you choices in your career.

What’s in it for you? ● A real job● A wage● High quality training● Qualifi cations● Support and guidance● Access to higher levels of Apprenticeships and even a

1 Arm yourself with experienceAn Apprenticeship allows you to gain valuable experience within a particular industry, which looks

great on your CV when you have fi nished your training.Employers tend to favour candidates with a year or two of experience, as well as qualifi cations. This means you’ll be a strong competitor when you are ready to look for a different job.

2 Earn while you learnStart building up your savings while you learn. Whether it’s a house, car, holiday or new computer,

Apprenticeships can help you get money in the kitty. You’ll also feel more stable and secure knowing there will be a pay cheque waiting for you at the end of each week or month. The current national minimum wage for Apprentices under 19 is £2.68 an hour, although many fi rms pay more than this.

3Gain a new qualifi cationAdd another qualifi cation to your CV when you complete your Apprenticeship.

As well as lots of relevant experience, employers will see that you have the drive and determination to complete your training and gain an award.Again, this will put you in a strong position as most employers look for relevant qualifi cations.

4Improve your prospectsCompleting an Apprenticeship will improve your earning ability. It has been proven that someone

who completes an Apprenticeship will earn signifi cantly more during their working careers than someone who hasn’t. It can also pave the way to other opportunities.

Many Apprentices work toward a BTEC or NVQ qualifi cation, and depending on which level you start at, you can progress to higher levels, e.g. an Advanced Apprenticeship or NVQ Level 4.Want to study for a degree? Higher education institutions will consider these qualifi cations should you wish to attend university later on.If you fancy being your own boss, the skills and knowledge gained from an Apprenticeship could also help you set up your own business.

5Broaden your skill setPick up new skills and develop existing ones.Companies value communication, numeracy,

teamwork and IT skills. The more you have to offer, the more you will appeal to prospective employers. An Apprenticeship means you can talk about many examples of how you’ve used these skills fi rsthand in the workplace.

6Stay ahead of graduatesThose leaving university often suffer from a lack of solid work experience in the fi eld they wish

to pursue. With an Apprenticeship under your belt, you’ll have between 1 and 4 years of experience to fl aunt, automatically giving you a headstart in the career stakes.

PETA Apprenticeship EmployersAs an organisation that was set up by employers for employers we work with a large number and variety of businesses across Hampshire and West Sussex. Gosport Borough Council began a programme of

Apprentice recruitment in July 2012. We are pleased to say that two of our original Business Administration Apprentices have just begun Year Two (NVQ Level 3) of the Apprenticeship – and are going from strength to strength. The development of our Apprentices’ skills during the last year has been a gratifying experience for all concerned, and Gosport Borough Council is pleased to be instrumental in providing meaningful training opportunities to young people in this way.

EMPLOYER: Gosport Borough Council

I am really glad that I chose to do my Apprenticeship with

PETA. Completing the Pre-Apprenticeship Gateway course with PETA helped me gain a set of invaluable skills before even gaining an Apprenticeship, as well as introducing me to new friends and opportunities. I really enjoyed how personalised the Gateway course was, and am really grateful for how much effort was put into helping me get my Apprenticeship. At the end of the 17 week Gateway Course, I attended an interview and gained an Apprenticeship with Gosport Borough Council. I have now completed my fi rst year and have just commenced Level 3 and enjoying every minute. I am so glad I chose to do my Apprenticeship with PETA – the staff are so friendly and always happy to help. I would fully recommend PETA to anyone considering starting an Apprenticeship.

… the purpose of a Traineeship is to

develop your personal skills and vocational skills

to get you ready for full time employment. This includes training in job search and interview techniques, time-keeping and team working – as

well as improving the relevant English and maths skills that employers

want. It can also include vocational and technical training in a given occupation such as engineering, business or ICT.

Work placement is central to the programme, allowing you to work with an employer to develop the behaviours you will need to fi nd and keep a job.

Traineeships are not just like going back to school. You will be continuing in education, albeit in a different environment, but doing it because you want to be there and are preparing to go directly on to work or an Apprenticeship.

New choices for 16 and 17 year olds The Government requires young people to paticipate in one of the following options until their 18th birthday.

● an Apprenticeship

● a TRAINEESHIP

● full-time education, such as school, college or private provider (PETA)

● part-time education or training if they are employed, self-employed or volunteering full-time.

Why have Traineeships been developed? In recent years many employers have been unhappy with the skills of school leavers, making it harder for any young people to fi nd work.

The jobs market has also been an exceptionally tough place for young people and it has become very diffi cult to gain relevant work experience and skills to help them go on and get permanent employment.

The Traineeship programme has been developed to bring school leavers up to the required level for the workplace, giving them skills and experience to compete in the labour market with more experienced adults. As well as helping young people get themselves ready for work, Traineeships are also there to provide a stepping stone to an Apprenticeship.

How do Traineeships work? Traineeships are fl exible programmes for young people trying to fi nd work or an Apprenticeship. They provide fl exible and tailor-made work preparation, including a work placement and further training in English and maths for those who have not achieved a GCSE grade C.

The main part of Traineeships will be a work placement, work preparation training and relevant English and maths for the workplace.

Traineeship programmes will run for a maximum of 6 months, but progression to an Apprenticeship or sustainable employment before the end of the programme is encouraged by PETA.

Traineeships

Traineeships

An important part of job placements will be regular constructive feedback from managers and formal reviews at key stages between the manager, learner and PETA. All our learners embarking on a Traineeship will be offered a guaranteed job interview and a job reference at the end of the work placement.

Who arethey for?

Traineeships are available for young people aged 16–18

(including young people with Learning Diffi culty Assessments up to

age 25) who:

● Are not currently in a job and have little work experience, but who are focused on work

or the prospect of it

● Are qualifi ed below Level 3

● Are likely to have a reasonable chance of being ready for employment or an Apprenticeship within 6 months of engaging in a Traineeship

So, in other words, after fi nishing GCSEs, there is now a choice between going on to take A-levels and/or vocational

qualifi cations, or alternatively participating in a Traineeship or extended work experience.

If you are claiming unemployment benefi ts, Traineeships are designed to be fl exible enough so that the training programme also fi ts with benefi t rules. This would enable you to continue to receive Jobseeker’s Allowance or Universal Credits while also taking part in a Traineeship.

Will you get paid for the work placement? Unfortunately, employers are not required to pay learners for the work placement under a Traineeship which is no different to going to college. However, under a Traineeship you will already have one foot in the door with an employer and a job or Apprenticeship.

Traineeships are exempt from the Minimum Wage. Young people taking part in Traineeships will be undertaking education and training and some may qualify for fi nancial support, including the 16-19 Bursary Fund.

Types of Traineeships and different subjects PETA Traineeships will be tailored to the relevant work skills of different industries i.e. Engineering, Business, Computing and ICT and Warehousing.

What happens at the end of a Traineeship? A Traineeship won’t necessarily take the full six months, as your Traineeship will come to an end when either:

● you get a job or an Apprenticeship or further education and training

● when all the different parts of your agreed programme are completed

● or you have completed six months on the programme.

The PETA plan is for all Traineeships to include a guaranteed interview with the work placement company at the end of the placement.

Which Providers can deliver them? The answer is simple, any Private Provider or College that has achieved an Ofsted inspection grade of Outstanding or Good can deliver Traineeships. This includes PETA Limited.

What are the components of a Traineeship? The core elements of a Traineeship will focus on three main components plus an optional component for vocational (technical) skills training. They are:

1

Work Placement The duration of your work placement should be at least 6 weeks and no more than 5 months, but exact durations will depend on your individual needs. Employer engagement is critical to the success of Traineeships so your placement will be identified before you start the programme.

All our Employers will be required to guarantee an interview at the end of the programme.

2

Work preparation training The content of this training is intentionally flexible to address your particular needs. Your training could include:

• CV writing

• Interview preparation

• Job-search skills

• Interpersonal skills

• Employability skills

3 English and Maths

As with other learning programmes, learners without at least a grade C in GCSE English and Maths will be required to undertake English and maths training. PETA believe Functional Skills to be most appropriate for learners undertaking Traineeships as they are specifically work related.

4 Vocational skills training (optional)

The advantage of including vocational and/or technical skills training in your Traineeship is that you will become more employable within the occupation that interests you the most. Also, as PETA usually recruit learners to specific occupational areas progression to a PETA Apprenticeship is more likely.

So, if you’re looking to develop your skills and progress on to an Apprenticeship or sustainable employment then a Traineeship is probably your best pathway
