How to Get the MostOut of   Your Life

E  ALL wish  to get themost out of life. Thedeepest desire of

everyone's heart is to  live  successfully.  W e want people tolike  us; we want to be at homein  the universe — and beyondeverything  else, we need tohave a  sense  of security in apower  greater than we are. Inthe busy  world  in  which  welive  today, we hear a great deal

about the need of personal efficiency, and each one of us likesto feel that he is efficient, thathe is able to get things done, toattain the goals of his desires.

To get the most out of lifethen, he begins to ask himself,"What is efficiency, anyway?"

"What do I mean by getting themost out of life?" For if efficien

cy is important in our businessaffairs, how much more important it must be in the management and conduct of our wholelife;  for there could be no real

efficiency if it meant only theproper  running of an office, orthe saving of lead pencils andpieces of string.

One is not efficient merelybecause  he makes money orbuilds up a reputation for  him

self, for efficient  living  mustmean a l l   of our life. Does ourfood  digest? De we sleep  wellat night? Do we sleep in peaceand  wake with  a joyful anticipation  of the day's duties andpleasures? Is our li fe a duty or apleasure, anyway? This is one

of the first questions we shouldask ourselves — not that we do

not  wish  to  execute  our duty, but, in doing this, we do notwant to  become  executed our

selves. For even duty shouldnot strain us, but rather becomea channel for the spontaneousexpression of some Divine urgewhich  is in everything.

The other day I was readinga poem by Don Blanding inwhich  he speaks of "the quiet

faith within a seed." "The quietfaith  within  a seed!" — what atremendous thought, no madrush  against time —  just  thequiet assurance of its own nature. The quiet faith  within  aseed . . . the divine alchemy ofits own being producing verdant beauty out of life itself asthough  it had complete faith inits own being, in the  soil  inwhich it is rooted . . . in the sun, rain  and air, into which it liftsits head.

Perhaps  there  can be no true

efficiency without faith, forfaith  is the  substance  of thingsunseen—the invisible generatorthat draws energy out of life itself  and puts it into our act."The quie t fa i th  w i t h i n  aseed" achieving its beauty  without competition; for the seed of

the tumble weed has no concern  with  the seed of the giant

Sequoias, nor does a beautifullake in the high Sierras worryover the  majestic  depths of the

Pacific.  The mouse is not envious of the mountain  lion,  northe gnat of the elephant.

We do not compete  until  webegin to compare. Nature itselfneither competes nor compares.God  has no adversaries. Faithhas no fear. Hope is not con

cerned  with  despair; and thegreat affirmations of life are unconquerable. There is no efficiency without faith;  there  isno ri gh t-v iew in g of the  un i verse without seeing God ineverything.

God  is all  there  is — thereisn't anything  else.  He is thesun,  the moon, the stars, theuniverse, the flicker of an eyelash.  And He has given us thepower to create.  He is, in a reflected  sense,  even the unrealdevils  the human mind has

created out of its own imagination. The idea of the devils andthe idea of hell  are but negativeprojections of the power ofGod,  as conceived by the mindof ignorant man. They are ob

jects  of our own pervertedcreation. We project  hell,  then

sit in it and get hot and wonderwhat is the trouble. It is our pic-

ture, and to the  extent  that weinsist  upon holding  on to it, tothat same  extent  we are stuckwith  it. Such procedure could

    hardly  be called efficient.

W e al l remember a popularsong of a few years ago, thelyric  of  which  ran somethinglike  this: "Accentuate the positive,  eliminate the negative, and  don't  mess  with  Mr. In-

between." In  these  few wordslies the true secret of getting themost out of life. This was theadvice of Jesus. He kept tellingus to center our attention on thegood, the true, the beau t if u l .. ."As  a man thinketh in his heart,so is he." "Consider the lilies of

the  field."  Observe nature. Hesaid  . . . learn from nature . . .see  with  what simple faith ittrusts in God and how easily itfulfills  its destiny and purpose.

A  short time ago I had lunchwith  the sales manager of an in

surance company. In the courseof our conversation, I askedhim, "How  do you men sell in surance?" I was very much interested in his reply, for he said,"We don't try to train our mento sell insurance, we teach themto offer a service, and if the serv

ice is adequate, people will wishto buy it. If we made a sale

without  this service, the sale itself  would  be a complete  failure."  Then he said somethingthat interested me very much

indeed.  He said, "You know, our  salesmen are not go-getters,they are go-givers — going outand  helping people to get themost out of their  assets,  whichwill  give them the most happiness,  the most comfort and the

deepest  sense  of security."The high-pressure salesman

is  fast  becoming obsolete — heis  no longer considered efficient. The person who overdevelops his ego is not efficient;he is merely  whisding  to keepup his courage, like a little boy

in  the dark who is very afraid. The one who tries to dominateothers is not an efficient person. The efficient person is the onewho  finds  greatness  in others'co-operation and unity.

This  is true in every walk of

life.  It applies  just  as much tobusiness as it does to personalrelations. It is the only mannerin  which  one can inspire anyone to effort and co-operation.We are now  living  in a periodof time in which, in spite of allthe confusion in the  world,

there is emerging a great and anew concept of life — the con-

cept  that  there  is a powergreater than we are, around andwithin us. It is only as we reach

back to this power that we really  get the most out of life. Themost efficient is the one whomost completely  co-operateswith this power, whether or nothe is aware of the  fact. For it isonly  through our co-operationwith  this power all around us

that, through faith , we arrive atthe ability to work withoutstrain. True efficiency is poisedand  resilient. "Easy does it."That's a good thought  — for theright  way to do anything cannot be accompanied by tensionand  strain. Once again we are

reminded  of the "quiet faithwithin  a seed."

So many suffer from tensionand  weariness in their daily activity.  What is the  cause  of it?What can we do to rid  ourselvesof this attitude? Fatigue and

weariness, when no physicalcomplications are indicated, can be directly traced to a lackof enthusiasm. A person so afflicted cannot get the most outof life. It is the emotional andphysical  strain of his negativeattitude that is wearing him

out. Wha t he needs is a tonic of•power  — something that  will  re

fresh him as he draws in apower greater than he is.

    We all know what happens

to an automobile when the battery fails — the lights dim, themotor no longer turns over. And  so we recharge the battery.

Just  what is this energy  withwhich  we recharge the battery?Where did it come from? Whomade it? Where do we go to

get it? What is it anyway? The f i rs t thing we learn

about energy is that it is birth-less, deathless and changeless—everything  is  filled with  it. Butsomeone  wi l l  say, " W e getenergy out of the waterfall, thew i n d m i l l ,  o i l , c o a l , w o o d . "Even  so, but we do not put theenergy in any of  these  mediums. W e take it out — naturehas already stored it there. Perhaps the waterfall is one of thebest  examples — when we setup  a generator beside a water

fall, we are drawing out a natural  energy that continually replenishes itself, descending as itwere, from the mountain topsof life.

Now  there is another  kind  ofener gy i n the un iv er se — apower all around us which we

breathe, in which we live andmove and have our being — a

HOW TO GET THE   MOST   OUT OF   YOUR   UFE

power for good which is available to everyone.  Jesus  told  usthat at the  center  of our beingis  the breath of God; but be

cause  each and everyone of ushas  individual  wi l l  and thepower of choice, we can in ourignorance misinterpret thistruth and assume that its originhas no deeper root than ourown personal ego. Here lies the

source of most of our sufferingand  misery, whether physical, mental,  or emotional. The ego,as it were, is a stone before thesepulchre of the Christ spiritwithin  us, waiting to be rolledback that we may arise to ourfull power and glory.

W e,  too, must learn to trust,to have faith in this powerwhich  can do anything. Theperson who does not believe inGod  is still asleep to the greaterpossibility  of his own  mind. The person who learns to have

conscious faith in the poweraround  him ventures forth onthe most definite and promisingexperience of his entire life; forwhatever wrong there is, is withus and not  with God.  It doesn'ttake a very brilliant intellect tounderstand this. It is already

being  discovered by thousandsof people that the most efficient

ones  are those who  live  in theclosest contact  with  the  DivineIntelligence in which we moveand  have our being. For there

is  another  kind  of a waterfall, another  kind  of coal and woodand oil,  in which  cosmic energyis  stored. That is the soul ofman himself, and it is his mind, belief and faith that taps thisenergy and brings it out to use

for definite purposes. When  Jesus said, "Consider

the lilies of the  field  how theygrow;  they  toil  not, neither dothey  spin;  and yet I say untoyou,  that even Solomon in allhis  glory was not arrayed likeone of these," he was really tell

ing  us to consider our own natures; for  just  as the  lily  of thefield  is  rooted in the creativesoil of the earth and lifts its faceto the sun of heaven, so we arerooted in the creative  mind  ofGod,  and may  lift  our  face  tothe inspiration of the MostHigh.  The parallel is perfect, for all nature is one, and Godand man are one; and the Lawof Good which  lies about us isequally  available to each andall. It is no respecter of persons, but gives all of itself to each one

of us."Bubbles we earn  with  a

asking."  We are so constitutedthat we cannot be happy unlesswe love and are loved. We donot feel complete unless we accomplish  and  create.  Life haswilled it that way — nor you norI nor all the art and science andwit  of man can change one bit

of it. A l l  nature cries  "create ordie."

Something is wrong when inthe midst of all the Power andPresence there  is, we lack theenthusiasm for efficient  living.W e may be certain that whatever is wrong is not  with  God

nor with  life, but  with  us. It isour own attitudes toward ourfellowman,  toward life, towardGod,  that are the boulders thatblock our road to fulfillment.

And now we are going to remove  these  boulders through

an  act of faith, through a silentpartnership  with  that powergreater  than we are — thatPower which i s God. This

Power is right where we are, and  forever available like thebreath we breathe, it flows

through  us. It is true that wehave never  seen  this Power.Nor  have we looked upon theface  of physical energy — onlyupon what it does.

There is a doer  within  us,who,  through faith,  bears  witness  to life. A l l the power and

al l  the presence and all the possibility  there  is in the universeresides in the Divine Natureand  in our conscious co-operation  with  it. It is that Powerthat flows through us, even asbeauty flows through the artist.

The rhythm of the universesings in us and love becomes apulsation  animating our wholebeing.

Like  patients coming to aphysician  for a physical healingthat the laws of nature mayagain readjust their lives, so wecome to the Great Physician, for what we really need is moreof  God.

Over   the  time  thou  hast  no  power;  to  redeem  aworld  sunk  in  dishonesty  has not  been  given  thee;solely over one man  therein  thou hast a  quite absolute, uncontrolled  power;  him  redeem,  him  make honest.

magic! For whether we realizeit  or not, we perform  feats  ofmental magic every moment ofour lives. Yet this magic we useis so constant, so natural in itsmanifestation, that we do notrecognize the potency of thispower that we possess.

To many the word "magic"means something mysteriousand occult—a hidden force theydo  not understand. But i tspower is something for whichthey long, for in it they see thepromise of instant realization, transformation, and manifesta

tion.  In  that  same  longing wehave all dreamed of a magic

carpet, an  Aladdin's  lamp, or a

fairy  wand. We have thoughtthat  these  dreams were  childhood  fantasies, and that theyhad no deep significance in mature life. Actually, we do   have,in  a very real  sense,  the magiccarpet that can transport us tothe realm of happiness andpeace of mind — the  Aladdin'slamp that can  illumine our wayand  bring into life an abundance of all good—and the fairywand  that we can use to transform  our  world.  There is nomystery involved,  except  that

created by man's limited knowledge, for this wondrous force isthe natural operation of mentaland  spiritual law.

W e may not know it, but weare all magicians. We are allusing  the i nv is ib le power ofmind  to create, on the objective

plane of experience, that whichwe have mentally conceived.

    MENTAL  MAGIC

True, many of our experiencesare not to our  liking  — we arenot proud of some of our mentaloff-spring.  However, the very

power which can be used tocreate  the beautiful and thetrue is the  same power we pervert in the creation of the uglyand the false. The principle upon  which true magic is based isthe very law of our being. This

principle  is universal, and istherefore available to every person who desires to cultivate anduse it constructively. The keyto its unfoldment is found inthe very nature of mind.

Now,  before  we can bringforth into our experience  that

which  we desire, we first mustlearn the law through whichthe conditions of life are mademanifest. Proficiency in right-thinking  depends upon  one'sunderstanding and practice ofmental law, just  as the mastery

of a magician depends upon hisunderstanding and practice ofhis art.

Everyone, on occasion, hasdelighted in the showman'ssleight of hand and in the  illusion  of trickery. The  sensesdraw conclusions  that the intel

lect  is reluctant to  accept.  W eknow  that  it could not be as it

seems,  but what fascinationthere  is in such wizardry! I remember  once  watching a showin  Philadelphia. The magicianwas standing on the  stage  bywhat appeared to be a  baretable. He started his act by talking  to the audience in very confidential  tones.  After a time Ibecame  aware  that  he had acane  in his hand and  that  he

was moving it about on thetable. Suddenly an egg appeared at the end of his  cane. He  continued a running comment, all the while  rolling  theegg about. Then he said,"Ladies and Gentlemen, youwill now notice that the egg of a

moment ago is a newly hatchedchicken." Then, surprisingly,I saw that it was a baby chick hewas touching with his cane. H econtinued, "Notice  that  thechicken is now larger than itwas a second ago.  Feathers  arebeginning to grow on its body!"

I looked, and the  feathers werethere.  A bit later he remarked,"We now see  that it is a rooster.Notice the comb and also thespurs. You  wi l l  now observethat  the bird is  fu l l  grown!"And  sure enough, a maturerooster was strutting about onthe table. The magician then

reversed this process  until  onlythe egg remained, and then itcompletely disappeared.

Looking back later, I realizedthat no one was permitted toenter  during  the performance. This  enabled the magician tocommand  the unbroken attention of the group and to invokehis subtle power of mental control.  W e in the audience had

seen  only what he  told  us tosee. Each time he insisted,"Notice  that you now see," itappeared as he said.  Suggestionis  the main prop in the magician's bag of tricks.

    Now,  illusion and hypnotismare not exclusively artifices ofthe trickster. In  fact, every daythe  sense judgment  accepts appearances instead of reality, andwe fall  victim  to erroneous  self-suggestion.  Also,  the  mind  ispartially  hypnotized by whatwe have been  told  to believe;

and we see things as others haveinsisted  that we see them. W ehave allowed ourselves to beduped by false appearances anderroneous suggestions, like anaudience under the spell of ahypnotist.  We must  reject  allillusions  and assume control of

our own thinking. The magic of  mind  is this:

Subconscious livingness is creatively responsive to consciouscommand;  and the color of our

attitudes, motives, and beliefstints  our  world  of experience acorresponding  hue. A l l magic,be it the genuine operation ofcreative  mind  or be it the  illusion of fakery, has one thing incommon and that is suggestion. This  creative mind  within us is

as impressionable as a naivespectator in the hands of a magician.  It is completely amenable to outside direction, and itobediently responds to theagent  in control. Wisely used, suggestion is the mental magician's most valuable trick.

There are two kinds of magic— black and white. Black magicis  the use of mental power fornegative or destructive demonstrations, either unintentionalor wilful.  The manifestation ofsickness, poverty, hardship and

accident belong to the unintentional  classification.  The blacker type is that in which a personconsciously  uses  the power ofmind  to bring harm to others.Voodoo,  spell-casting, and sorcery number among the  wilfulevil  applications of mental

force. The  witch  practice ofhexing  an enemy,  invoking in-

jury or death upon him, hadreal power behind it, if   the person toward whom the  evil  actsand  thoughts were directed  believed  harm  would  come tohim.  Also,  the man  — or nation— that achieves its goal throughsheer  will  power motivated bygreed and desire, is using mindin  reverse. Such violations ofthe basic law of good must

eventually wreak havoc uponthe  evil  doer himself.

White  magic is the tappingof the reservoir of universalmind  to bring forth serenityand  harmony. It is the powerful,  but right, use of the creative force of suggestion to mold

life a litde nearer to perfection. It has, as its ideal, mental andspiritual  unfoldment. It is thepower that  Jesus  used. It is thepower that heals, that solves, that guides, that inspires andleads us to our good. It is the

constructive and positive use ofmind  power and thought; andit  is the father of every discovery, development, inventionand  creadon of man.

Between the white magic ofconstructive intent and theblack magic of destructive de

sign  is a vast field of varyingshades of gray. This is a field of

ignorant and undirected thinking.  By ignorant, I mean having  no knowledge of  Self,  andbeing unaware of the mentallaw  of one's life. A man may belearned concerning  thosethings which he has discovered, but if he lacks understandingof his own nature, some part ofhis life will carry a tinge of grayproportionate to that lack. The

great  majority of people practice this gray magic. They unconsciously go through life —sometimes happy, sometimesgloomy — producing haphazardly  the results  those  moodscreate.  Most of what man creates  is unintentional. He does

not deliberately demand chronic bad luck,  losses  and disappointments, but unconsciously, through his lack of understanding .  Ineffectualness  is theprime  manifestation of graymagic It reflects  one's states  of

indecision,  querulousness, resentment, animosity and dissatisfaction, as opposed to one'smoods of confidence, joy, inspiration  and appreciation. It isthe flux of positive againstnegative; good cancelled bydenial; denial partially resolved

by belief. Constancy of right-thinking  is the quality which

can put an end to ineffectual-ness; and receptivity to unlimited truth is the quality which

raises man from the shadow into the light of understanding.

To achieve the mastery ofwhite magic, one must developa persistently positive andpowerful  attitude toward life-one must  build  up a dynamicbelief in good —  one must have

faith  in one's purpose and conviction  in one's goal. One mustpractice the trick of right-thinking  as patiently as the magiciangoes  about perfecting his trickery. The mastery of any  skilldemands dedication of  self  tothat  end, and the mastery ofskillful  thinking demands consecration of  self  to  one's  ideal.

The props of white magic areconcentration and meditation.Simply  stated, concentration isthe disciplining of the mind toconstancy and devotion of pur

pose.  Aids  in its practice areimagination, visualization, andanticipation. It is the magiccarpet  that  carries us in mentalflight  to the  eager,  joyous landof things-to-be.

Meditation  is the quiet, inner knowingness of one's unity

with  God.  Aids  in its practiceare contemplation and realiza

tion. It is our Aladdin's lampwhich  bring us into the lightof our divine Reality, where the

potential  becomes  the actual. These  two — concentrationand meditation — bri ng in toplay  the transcendent power offaith.  Faith is the wand  thatsets  the energy of mind in motion. It is the subtle, unseencatalyst whose presence acceler

ates  the creative action of mind.White magic is the proficient

use of the unseen law of ourbeing. Our very realization ofits potential gives us commandof it, but we must practice  untilour thoughts are deft and

    obedient. W e must  perfect

thetrick of right-thinking  until  itbecomes  a  skillful  habit. Wemust employ the  arts  of concentration and meditation andmake use of the transformingwand of faith. We must invokethe wisdom and power of a

W i l l  greater than our own,  thatour purposes  wi l l  always beguided  by love. Thus, can weattain the faculty of whitemagic. Each of us is a  mastermagician to whom an invisiblepower has been entrusted; andthat  trust must be kept  with

diligence, for on  that  keepingdepend all the  issues of life.

    The Power of Prayer

     Beth Brown

    1\   WANTED  a set of  dishes  —

    and  I got them. I lost a\  dress — and I found it. I

needed money — and my needwas met.

What  did  I do? Where  did  Igo?  How  did  I change my lackinto  luck? The answer to all ofthese  questions lies in the oneword — prayer.

I have learned to pray. I havelearned to believe in the power

of prayer. I have found thatprayer  has served me, not onlyin  great emergencies, but alsoin  filling  my  small,  everydayneeds.

Prayer  has no fences. Itknows no distance. It telescopesthe mi les and sends your

thought into space faster thanany telegram. That's how I got

the dishes. I first saw thosedishes — a fine set of Wedgwood  — in a department storehere in N ew York City.  I stoodin  the shop longingly fingeringa beautiful cup and saucer. M yfancy took flight. I saw thedishes — in my nouse — on mytable. They  looked so beautifulserving  up Sunday dinner.W h y  couldn't I buy them? That was my heart  talking. M y

thousand miles away. When Iunpacked it , out  came  theWedgwood  china I had handled so yearningly here in NewYork.  I was amazed. It seemedso co-incidental. But  there  areno accidents in God. I had sentout a thought — and thoughtsmake things. W e  live in a worldof cause and effect. I had wanted these dishes — and here they

were. I was humbly grateful tothe power that had picked upmy prayer and granted it.

Of  course, I wrote a thank-you note to my friend who hadsent  the gift. I told her my experience in the store. She hadan  experience, too. She wroteback to say she had  fully  intended to buy me two beautifulbracelets, but in spite of herselfhad  been drawn like a magnetto the china department — andinspired  to select  the dishes instead.

Whether it's dishes or  diamonds you want — or divineguidance to make decisions —no power can match the powerof prayer. As food feeds us — assun warms us — as a lamp lightsour  way — so prayer lifts us,connecting us with an invisible

force and directing it for a visible purpose.

Prayer can reach anywhere. It can do anything. It can helpyou find what you have lost — i fyou have faith — if you  believe.

The story of the lost dress isanother minor miracle — one ofmany in my life. I had an invitation  to a week end in thecountry. I wanted to look mybest  so I went shopping for acomplete new outfit. When I

arrived  home  with  my manypackages, I made the sad discovery that I had lost the dressI had purchased to wear at theSaturday night dance.

I phoned the store, the restaurant where I had lunched, and  the lost-and-found department of the taxi company—onlyto be told that no dress had beenturned  in . M y sister insisted I'dnever see that dress again. ButI  liked  that dress. I had boughtand paid for it—and it belongedto me.

That night I prayed that mydress might be found — by anhonest person — and returnedto me — in time for my weekend. We are told to dig ditches— when we pray for rain — toreceive the deluge of our good. That's putting prayer into ac

tion.  So I reached for an emptyhanger in my clothes closet —

and in my mind, I saw my dressin  its proper place.

I had lost it on Thursday. Iwas leaving Friday night .Friday  morning my  telephonerang and a woman's voice toldme  that  a package  of mine waswaiting  for me. She had foundit — in the  belt  department, ofall  places  — opened the box —consulted my  sales  slip and

called me.M y  sister  was amazed. She

said:  "Imagine fi nd in g yourdress! Truth is  stranger  thanfiction!" I said nothing. I knewthat,  somehow, my prayer hadintervened, so  that  the dishonest person who had originallypicked up my dress and carriedit  off was moved to  lose  it — inthe  belt  department — so  thatan honest heart  could return ittome.

There  seems  to be a definiteplan  for Man — just  as  there  is

in  Nature. You sow a seed  andyou  reap  the crop.

A  friend of mine was introuble. She had to  meet  amortgage  payment. It was quitea large sum — more than I hadin  my savings  account.  But Ihad confidence  that  my prayer

to help her would be answered— provided I had faith. M y

friend  had lost her faith completely. Why wouldn't  she?She had recently lost her younghusband. Doctor bi l l s and

funeral  expenses  had takeneverything she owned. She wasdown  to her  last  cent  — andfrankly  told me so.

To get her out of her despondent mood, I jokingly said:"Come on! Open your pocket-

book. Do you have your  lastcent  with  you? Give it to me!Now  read what it  says."  W eboth read the inscription: "InGod  W e Trust!" — an inscription so inspired and uplifting-written  upon a humble littlepenny — an inscription laying

the foundation upon which ourgreat  nation has built a  greatpeople and a great land.

That little penny was ourgood luck piece. And as we satthere  in the dusk, reaching outfor help, the  telephone  rang. A

relative of mine was calling. Ihad loaned this man  somemoney — so long ago  that  I hadcompletely forgotten all  aboutit .  But God  does  not  forget. And He reminded my debtor topay me, so that I could help myfriend pay her  debt.

    A  LETTER   FROM   SUSIE

yon  I had roamed  as a  child.Susie  sat on a big rock,  herfingers trailing through  thecool,  clear water  of the mounta in  s t ream. Suddenly  sheturned to me and said, seemingly  apropos of nothing,  "Wel l ,  Iguess  the  answer  is 'to  thineown self be true!'"

A  week or so  later, much tomy dismay, my gay, sophisticat

and a masterful manner towardSusie, whom he obviously worsh ipped.  Susie ,  i n her  latethirties,  was his senior  by anumber of years.  She admittedshe was completely helpless ina kitchen. She "knew" she wastoo old to  have children. She

What  the Science  of Mind Means to Me

     Floyd   H. Corbin

    MRnew people com

ing  into this worksoon develop the

idea  that all they need to do isapply  the teachings and theycan have anything they want. This  is true, but not in the waythey think. For example, awoman  came into my office theother day, very indignant, because  the teaching was not

working  for her. She had beenhaving  marital difficulty fornearly a year and in desperationturned  to Religious Science, two  or three months ago. A l though  belligerent and hostile, she was certain there wasnothing  wrong  with  her. For

the past two weeks she hadbeen treating to change her

husband  into a meek,  mild-tempered man so he  would  seethings her way, and in so doingwould  restore harmony to theirhome. Of course she wantedGod  to deliver several hundreddollars  in addition, to clear upsome old bills which had causedconsiderable controversy.

First,  the newcomer shouldrealize that this is not a "Get

ting"  Philosophy,  but a means— a technique — by  which  wecommune  with  Infinite Intelligence. By so doing,  we becomeaware of our  oneness  with  theUniverse  in  which  all goodthings are already complete, ready to be added to our experi

ence. Jesus taught this. H e said,"Seek  ye first the  Kingdom  of

God  and His righteousness;and  all  these  things shall beadded unto you." " . . . the kingdom  of God is  within  you. "" . . . ye shall know the Tru thand  the Truth shall make youfree." Unless we first take thetime to  turn within,  we cannotrealize we have been conditioned  with  half-truths,  withfalse beliefs,  with  many things

that do not coincide  with  ourtrue nature — things aboutwhich  we are secretly hostile, frustrated or confused. Realizing this, we try to clear up negative attitudes through understanding and treatment. W ecan rightfully expect  harmoni

ous daily activity when Harmony  is established inside. ThatHarmony radiates like the lightfrom  a candle, and, whereverwe go, the Light of love,  kindness and harmony shines forth, lighting our way and dissolvingdarkness not only for ourselvesbut for all  those  around us.Then,  with  this peace of mind— with  the relaxation and poisethat this  state  brings — we become clear channels for the Infinite to flow through, and creative ideas began to pop into our

    conscious  mind.  They are so

real,  so dynamic, so true, thatwe are compelled to act uponthem; and as we act upon themwe gain knowledge, experience, and self-confidence.  Withself-confidence, we walk andspeak  with  authority, truly becoming the "Sons of God," withdominion  over all things. If wekeep in communion  with  theInfinite, we give gratitude for

each demonstration, and moveforward  not only confidendybut lovingly, joyfully and happily.  If we  fail  to keep in communion, we develop a cockiness— we move away from theSource; we  become  materialistic,  even belligerent, hard, bru

tal,  and  once  more detached, and eventually unhappy.

Thus, to me, the ReligiousScience  teaching is not a "Getting"  Philosophy,  but a comm u n i n g  o ne — an d by theconstant communion and expression of gratitude we arrivein  the  M a i n  Chamber. Notthrough  the side door butthrough  the front door—whosehinges are on the inside, whoseknob is marked Love. The keyhole is Understanding, and theoil  that keeps the hinges work

    ing smoothly is Gratitude.

     Life's  Greatest Experience

    Orlando Wanvig

OME  time ago Vice-President Barkley said thatAmericans are spiritually

deficient; shortly  after  thatPresident Truman said that hehas found it impossible to persuade sectarian groups to reconcile their theological differencesand  present a united spiritualfront against the destructiveforces  threatening the  world.

Every month or so the Reader'sDigest  reprints one or morearticles decrying the spiritualpoverty of the American people, and editorial writers in ournewspapers harp on the  sametheme. I am reminded of MarkTwain's comment, "Everybody

talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it."

W e are chided for our povertyof spirit, but are not told whatto do about it. Now I want tosuggest means of  striking a balance  of body, mind and spirit.

Let me review the record ofwhat we have been thinkingand  studying in an effort to attain  increased understanding:Your  conscious mind is yourspirit. Jesus said, "God is spirit,"

meaning Infinite and UniversalSpirit.  Since infinitude cannotbe  divided  against itself, yourconscious  mind,  or spirit, is acenter in the Infinite ConsciousMind,  or God Spirit. You arenot separated from God, ever, but each one of you is a separate

entity, or center,  in the InfiniteConsciousness that we call

God.  Your problem and mine isnot to  seek  unity  with  God,since we are already (and always have been) one with  God,but to recognize that we are atthis and every moment unitedin  spirit  (consciousness)  withDivine Spirit.

Now  let us imagine that youare confronted  with  a problemof some  k i n d .  You want to

merge your consciousness  withGod's  consciousness. You  li ftyour mind by  saying,  "God," inwhatever term of address meansmost to you. Say that you owea debt payable at a certain date. You  have no idea how or wherethe money is coming from. After you have thought of  God,first  thank God for what youhave; next, think "You knowmy  problem, God ; my debt ispaid. I thank  you." Now a  lumpsum  of what you need  will  notdrop  into your hands, for God

does not work that way, but inthe day's routine someone maypay  you a smaller debt — youmay  have an unexpected gift. As  the pay date approaches youbecome  conscious that somehow,  with  a slight adjustmentof your finances, you do have

enough  to pay. Your first tendency will be to relate all the af

fairs that led up to your havingsufficient funds, and  call  thema "lucky break"—"coincidence."

A  few weeks ago I officiatedat a w e d d i n g  on a ranch inWyoming.  It was a large andfashionable out-of-doors  wedding.  The afternoon before  thewedding  a  cold  wind  began toblow,  and the clouds gathered.Several of the  guests  agreed

with the host that a snow stormmight be coming. If I had saidaloud,  'Tomorrow will  be clearand  beautiful," it  would  havesounded egotistical, and theywould  have speculated in itsbeing  coincidental when theday  d id  dawn  clear.  Again,

when  intermittent gusts ofstrong wind  began to blow,  if Ihad  said,  "At the hour of theservice it  will  be calm" (as Idid  within myself and as it didprove  to be), to the  weddingguests  the calm  would  haveseemed  sheer  coincidence. Tome it was, as I declared to myself,  a  union  of our spirit withthe Consciousness, or Spirit, ofGod;  and I thanked God for it.

Historic  evolution indicatesthat God wants  individual  perfection, and to that end we have

progressed from the simplestform  of creature to a more and

more perfected and complexbeing.  When our son was ababy learning to  walk,  Maryand  I tried to help him,  but theday  came  when he succeededin  pulling  himself  erect  by achair,  and without encouragement started to  walk.  As parents,  we  thrilled  over one oflife's  minor experiences.  Lifehad  done its part. The boy's

nerves and muscles were co-ordinated.  The body was ready.Al l  that was needed was theconscious co-operation of thespirit. W h en the boy was readyto supply it , he learned to walk.

This  is the common experience, and generically speaking,

that boy (mankind ) has walkedfar. He has learned the laws ofnature, and exploited them intothe greatest  era of achievementthe  world  has ever  known.  H ehas dominion over the materialand  intellectual world.  He has

mastered his  m i n d  and hisbody.  Is he losing his soul?

The condition in  which  wefind ourselves today is not a catastrophe. W e are on  the threshold of a new era, and this is itsinauguration. M a n has now become an efficient instrument for

the next advance in the Cosmicplan. He has achieved over the

lesser—the physical and  mental;now  he must learn to  acceptdomination  by the higher, andspiritual.  The time has comewhen, as Isaiah said, "The earthshall  be  full  of the knowledgeof  God."  "S ha ll the clay say tohim  that fashioneth it, whatmakest thou?" God made us,and  for Hi s purpose. W e cannot demand of Him:  "What are

You  making?" But we can  say,"How  can I help You achieveYour object through me?"

Think  of God and yourselflike  the bank and your checking  account. To be negotiable, every check you draw musthave the bank's name and your

name. You can use checks forany purpose  you will. The bankcares  nothing about what youdraw your check for, and it  willpay  the check. You might usethe money to bribe a publicofficial,  but the bank neitherknows,  nor cares,  that your actis  criminal. You may go to  jail, but the bank  will  not. Everythought you think is issuedfrom  your conscious  mind(spirit),  and like a check it hasyour  name and God 's. Y ou rthoughts may be  wrong,  but

God will  pay and you will  suffer. After you have suffered

enough you  will  realize thatG o d ' s  n a m e i s o n e v e r ythought, and knowing that, youwill  think good. Then  will  occur  those  strange coincidencesof which I spoke, and when yourealize that they are the productof your conscious union  withGod  you  will  begin to adventure in life's  greatest  experience.

If you use your checking account to  meet  all obligadons, and  are generous as  well,  youwill  have a reputation of beinga person of substance, whoseword  is as good as his bond. That is analogous to the attractive personality you  wi l l  be

when  you co-operate  with  Godin  your thinking. The acid testcomes when you have to co-operate with  God all  the way, forwhile  God  will  do more thanHis  share, it can only be co-operatively, and only when youacknowledge His supremacy. When  others see and feel thechange in you, then you mayknow that God is using you forHis  purpose.

I have in mind severa l

instances of the results of meet-ing  the acid  test.  O n e thatcomes very close to us is a poliocase.  The son-in-law of one ofour  practitioners is experiencing  a  severe  form of it. Whenthis strong young fellow wasstricken, and death seemed imminent, in the  face  of all appearances  she kept on prayingwith  faith. Others joined her.

The first time he was takenfrom the  iron lung he could notstay out over two minutes. Yesterday he remained out of it fortwenty-four hours. They havemet the acid  test  of completeco-operation  with  God.

Jesus, at the tomb of Lazarus,

gave us the technique. He firstsaid,  "I thank  thee,  Father" —the recognition of God's supremacy. Second, "I know thatthou  hearest me always" — hisunion  in consciousness  withGod.  T h i r d ,  "Lazarus, comeforth"—his command. Remember always: The Father thatdwelleth  in me, He doeth theworks.  Knowing  that God  willalways do "the work" is life's

     greatest experience.

    The  Villain  in the Picture

    Charles McNeill  Simon

H E N  we stop andthink  a moment, werealize that all we

know  of the  villain  is what wesee on the screen. He is anactor who is able to portraythat  which  the part calls for.H e  brings emotions of  hate, anger, disgust, and the  like,  tohis  audienoe. These  are the reactions desired in accordancewith  the script of the picture, and  have no bearing whatsoever on the character of theman  himself.

Let  us take a  well-knownactor of the "horror-type" motion  picture as an example. On

the screen he exemplifies allthat is weird and horrible, oftenstriking  terror to his audience;yet we may  meet  him off thescreen, in person, to  find  hepresents an entirely differentpicture.  He appears as thoughhe might be a Minister;  certain

ly a kindly and loving person —even a little bashful. He may

be a fait hfu l Chu rch- goi ngmember.

    A s t o n i s h i n g ,  i sn ' t i t ?

Changes our whole conceptionof the man. A n d yet I don'tknow why it should, unless wehave been accepting the outward  expression on the screenas the reality, not  realizing  thatthe picture of the man was

    merely an image, which we hadtr a n s p o s ed in to w h a t w ethought was the real person.

I know of an actor who portrays drunk scenes  to the pointof perfection, where you have afeeling  of revolting disgust forthe man. The thought occurs

that it was too perfect to bemerely acting—that it appearedtoo realistic not to have beenthe real thing. You feel that theman  must be pretty much of adrunkard,  and was probably"tight"  during  the  filming  ofthat particular scene. If the real

truth  were  known,  the actorwould  be  seen  in a new light.

    THE   VILLAIN   IN THE   PICTURE

The man never touches  a dropof liquor. He has no use for it.It  is no part  of his  "off-the-screen" existence.

I have seen on the screen, expressions of fear, hatred, dread, cunning,  malice, ruthlessness, poverty, hunger, sickness,  pain, and  all of those  experiences  orcondidons that  the world  considers undesirable.

W e  in  Religious  Sciencedeem them  as undesirable also, but  we go  even further thanthat.  W e  consider them  as untrue. They  are  untrue. Theyare merely flashes on a  screen, giving  us a  mental image of anexperience,  or condition, not toour  liking.

Consider for a moment  . . .Are we not all screens? Are notthe outward manifestations andexpressions, that  are a  part  ofour  daily  lives, merely  screensthat hide  the  Real Man —  the

Inner Consciousness that weknow is a part of each of us, andof God, and therefore  perfect? For a few examples, let us  lookback  at the  impatient driverwho  glared at us as he  passedthis morning;  the harried trafficofficer who gave  us a sharp re

ply  to a perfecdy normal question; the employer who eyed us

disapprovingly  as we  slippedinto the office a bit late; the exasperating salesgirl who was annoyed  over seeming trifles; thehurried waitress who seemed todisregard  us entirely.  Thesemay be but a few of your morerecent experiences;  yet the disregard  for courtesy,  the lack ofconsideration  which  you mayencounter,  is not the T ru e  Self

expressing.  These  actions andmouthings  are  merely passingportrayals  on the screen  of thevisible self.

This is intellectually acceptable. However, to use this  Principle  for greater  happiness, for

a fuller understanding of ourfellow man, and a realization ofour own at-one-ment  with God ,the mere  acceptance  is notenough.  As Emest Holmes soaptly  expressed  it, This acceptance must become a subjectiveembodiment, of which the in

tellect  furnishes but a mental picture.

Now  we understand what itmeans  to vision  the Inner M a n— the True Man of God. No wwe realize that  we should notlook at the outward manifesta

tion  alone.  W e  should lookthrough this outer shell and be-

hold  the Real Person, the perfect image and likeness of  God.And we should look within ourselves, remove our own outershell,  and  find  true wholeness, complete oneness,  with  InfiniteOmnipresence and  Omnipotence.

It is a  wonderful  attainmentto be able to recognize ourvaried  experiences as  scenes

passing  before our eyes  on thescreen of our existence.  However, let us not make the errorof  looking upon  these scenes asthough  they were  following  anunswervable groove, or rut. Letus instead realize that they are

merely  experiences which  wecan change by the  conscious ap

     plication  of   right  thinking.

Let us look at our fellow manwith  an understanding awareness of his Real Being. Look notupon  the outer shell, nor uponthe image on the screen, as theTruth  of his Being; but lookthrough al l of these outward expressions to the perfect man

that he is. When we do this, others  will  begin to look  uponus in their awakened light andconsciousness of our TrueBeing. For as the Bible tells us,"Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."

    Singing  With theSilent  Voice

     Dorothy Lewis Berry

aHAD  an unusual experience last week —  see whatyou  get out of it.

Weekend before last, I lostthe first round  with  a  "fluy"cold.  Went to work on myselfto see where my consciousnesswas  slipping,  and jacked thething  up so that I kept going. However, Monday night was aconference  w i t h  in t imatefriends  over a spiritual emer

gency. A nd Tuesday was lastpractice for our TelephoneCompany  Spring Concert.

M y  throat was raw — but Isang anyway (not so muchhign-mindedly  as stubbornly).Wednesday, die day of the concert, my voice was completely

    gone  —  I was  just whispering.A t  noon, I had my throat

sprayed, and came home with afever. After meditating andnapping,  the fever was gone, but so was the voice,
