THANK YOU FROM THE THORP FAMILYBob Thorp left this world with dignity and grace, never knowing of the many, many lives he touched in one way or another. How can our family ever say thank you for the tremendous outpouring of love and support that we were given during his illness and passing? The prayers, the cards, the food, the donations to Hospice and the Fenner Conservation Club, the hundreds of people who stood in line for hours at his calling hours and so many other gestures of love shown to us. We are blessed by all the wonderful tributes to Bob and we are so deeply touched by each and every one of you. Thank you. God Bless You. In Friendship, Love and Appreciation.

Slow Cooker Garlic Parmesan Chicken Soup

We’ve been singing the praises of our trusty slow cooker for years and we’ll continue singing said praises

for years to come. Today, we’ve got a creamy soup that we’ve recently become obsessed with, and that’s perfect if you want creaminess without all the accompanying calories. Chowder-esque soups tend to be roux-based, meaning they’re thickened with a butter, flour and cream mixture, but we skipped the butter and flour here and just used 2/3 a cup of heavy cream. Divided up into 8 servings, that’s super reasonable! So, to recap, rich, creamy flavor, packed with veggies and protein – a dinner you can definitely go back for seconds of.

The flavor here is the star of the show. Anytime someone says the words “garlic” or “parmesan” we’re already fully on board. You know those people who worry about having garlic breath? That’s not us. Give us all the garlic. All that to say this soup is seriously yummy – that flavor packs a punch! Plus, the fact that it’s chock-full of chicken, potatoes, carrots, celery and onion is so nice, since it turns this dish into a meal that will actually keep you feeling full – no hunger cravings hitting an hour after you leave the table.

This is such a nice dish to bring your family together at the table. Grab a crusty loaf of bread to dip in it, if you so choose, and then you can kick back and enjoy it with loved ones. Afterwards, you can let (read: force) someone else to tackle the minimal clean up; you’ve done your part by making this tasty soup!

INGREDIENTS: 10 minutes active; 3 hours inactive to prepare serves 8

3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cubed1 pound small potatoes (red or gold or both), halved or

quartered1/2 yellow onion, finely chopped2 carrots, peeled and chopped2 ribs celery, chopped4 cloves garlic, minced1/2 tablespoon Italian seasoningKosher salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste3 cups low-sodium chicken broth2/3-1 cup heavy cream4 tablespoons cornstarch1 cup parmesan cheese, plus extra for garnishPREPARATIONPlace cubed chicken in the bottom of slow cooker and top

with potatoes, onion, carrot, celery and garlic.Season generously with salt and pepper, then add Italian seasoning.Pour chicken broth over your chicken and veggies, then

stir together. Cover and cook on high for 2-3 hours, or on low for 4-5 hours, until chicken is cooked through and potatoes are fork tender.

Create a slurry by whisking cornstarch into heavy cream, then stir into slow cooker stew. Also stir in parmesan cheese.

Cover and cook for another 20-30 minutes, or until stew is thickened.

Transfer to serving bowls and serve hot, garnished with crusty bread, if desired.

Scientists Develop Method To Repair Damaged Structures

Deep Inside The EarDate: April 4, 2018Source: University of Southern CaliforniaResearchers at USC and Harvard have developed a new

approach to repair cells deep inside the ear -- a potential remedy that could restore hearing for millions of elderly people and others who suffer hearing loss.

The lab study demonstrates a novel way for a drug to zero in on damaged nerves and cells inside the ear. It’s a potential remedy for a problem that afflicts two-thirds of people over 70 years and 17 percent of all adults in the United States.

“What’s new here is we figured out how to deliver a drug into the inner ear so it actually stays put and does what it’s supposed to do, and that’s novel,” said Charles E. McKenna, a corresponding author for the study and chemistry professor at USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. “Inside

Murphy’s Law:

Consequences Over Syria

April 5, 2018: The Israeli Air Force was unusually quick to release the reason why one of their F-16Is was lost on a February 10th mission in Syria. The initial report was that an F-16I was shot down by a Russian built S-200 (SA-5) surface to air missile. It was a bit more interesting than that. The F-16I loss was but part of a very complex day. It began when an Iranian UAV (launched from an Iranian base in central Syria) entered Israeli air space and was shot down 90 seconds later. In retaliation Israel sent eight F-16Is to hit the Iranian base, especially the operations center for the larger Iranian UAVs operating over Syria. This facility was destroyed and seven Iranians were killed. Syria later reported that the base was 75 percent destroyed and the Iranians had moved out to another Syrian airbase. But how did the Syrians managed to shoot down an F-16I when they had failed so many times before? It was because a determined pilot took a chance. .

Israeli warplanes had dealt with the SA-5 for years and could destroy all the Syrian SA-5 launchers and radars in Syria if they wanted to. But Israel had an understanding with Russia, a nation that was something of a frenemy in Syria and the Russians wanted the SA-5s left alone. Even though the SA-5s were older tech they still posed some risk to Israeli (and American) warplanes and that is what happened to the F-16I. Post-crash investigation determined the cause was pilot error (not implementing countermeasures properly as first reported.) But the complete answer was that the pilot, faced with a situation where he could deal with the SA-5s but not complete his ground attack mission, decided to put the mission first and then carry out the SA-5 countermeasures. Sometimes this works but the

timing was a bit off as the counter-measures were not carried out quickly enough to prevent the SA-5 warhead from going off close enough to the F-16I to badly damage it. The pilot got the F-16I across the border where it crashed in Israel and the crew of two safely ejected. The pilot disobeyed orders but is unlikely to be punished because this risk taking is one reason Israeli pilots are regarded as the most effective in the region. Whatever comfort the Iranians and Syrians took in the downing of the F-16I (a very rare event) their own pilots would put them straight and point out how this reinforced why the Israeli pilots and air force was dominant in this part of the world.

For the last decade Israel has been increasingly willing to share their methods and techniques. This was demonstrated in 2017 when Israel held its third “Blue Flag” exercises which, since 2013, have been held every two years. Blue Flag is based on the international “Red Flag” exercises the United States has been hosting since 1975. These multinational Red Flag events were meant to improve coordination among allied air forces in combat. Because of that until the 1990s nearly all the foreign air forces were those closely allied with the United States and able to practice using classified equipment and techniques. Since

Breakthrough Made In

Atomically Thin Magnets

Date: April 4, 2018Source: Cornell UniversityCornell researchers have become the first to control atomically

thin magnets with an electric field, a breakthrough that provides a blueprint for producing exceptionally powerful and efficient data storage in computer chips, among other applications.

The research is detailed in the paper, “Electric-field switching of two-dimensional van der Waals magnets,” published in Nature Materials by Jie Shan, professor of applied and engineering physics; Kin Fai Mak, assistant professor of physics; and postdoctoral scholar Shengwei Jiang.

In 1966, Cornell physicist David Mermin and his postdoc Herbert Wagner theorized that 2-D magnets could not exist if the spins of their electrons could point in any direction. It wasn’t until 2017 that some of the first 2-D materials with the proper alignment of spins were discovered, opening the door to an entirely new family of materials known as 2-D van der Waals magnets.

Shan and Mak, who specialize in researching atomically thin materials, jumped on the opportunity to research the new magnets and their unique characteristics.

“If it’s a bulk material, you can’t easily access the atoms inside,” said Mak. “But if the magnet is just a monolayer, you can do a lot to it. You can apply an electric field to it, put extra electrons into it, and that can modulate the material properties.”

Using a sample of chromium triiodide, the research team set out to do just that. Their goal was to apply a small amount of voltage to create an electric field and control the 2-D compound’s magnetism, giving them the ability to switch it on and off.

To achieve this, they stacked two atomic layers of chromium triiodide with atomically thin gate dielectrics and electrodes. This created a field-effect device that could flip the electron-spin direction in the chromium triiodide layers using small gate voltages, activating the magnetic switching. The process is reversible and repeatable at temperatures under 57-degrees Kelvin.

The discovery is an important one for the future of electronics because “the majority of existing technology is based on magnetic switching, like in memory devices that record and store data,” said Shan. However, magnets in most modern electronics don’t respond to an electric field. Instead, a current is passed through a coil, creating a magnetic field that can be used to switch the magnet on and off. It’s an inefficient method because the current creates heat and consumes electrical power.

Two-dimensional chromium-triiodide magnets have a unique advantage in that an electric field can be directly applied to activate the switching, and very little energy is required.

“The process is also very effective because if you have a nanometer thickness and you apply just one volt, the field is already 1 volt per nanometer. That’s huge,” said Shan.

The research team plans to continue exploring 2-D magnets and hopes to form new collaborations around campus, including with scientists and engineers who can help them find new 2-D magnetic materials that, unlike chromium triiodide, can work at room temperature.

“In a sense, what we have demonstrated here is more like a device concept,” said Mak. “When we find the right kind of material that can operate at a higher temperature, we can immediately apply this idea to those materials. But it’s not there yet.”

this part of the ear, there’s fluid constantly flowing that would sweep dissolved drugs away, but our new approach addresses that problem. This is a first for hearing loss and the ear. It’s also important because it may be adaptable for other drugs that need to be applied within the inner ear.”

The paper was published April 4 in the journal Bioconjugate Chemistry. McKenna co-authored it with David Jung of Harvard Medical School, among others. It is the latest achievement in USC’s priority program to advance biomedicine, including the recent launching of the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience. The Michelson Center unites USC experts across disciplines to solve some of the most intractable research

challenges related to health at the molecular level. The facility will house the new USC Center of Excellence in Drug Discovery, with McKenna as its director.

There are caveats. The research was conducted on animal tissues in a petri dish. It has not yet been tested in living animals or humans. Yet, the researchers are hopeful given the similarities of cells and mechanisms involved. McKenna says since the technique works in the laboratory, the findings provide “strong preliminary evidence” it could work in living creatures. They are already planning the next phase involving animals and hearing loss.

The study breaks new ground because researchers developed a novel drug-delivery method. Specifically, it targets the cochlea, a snail-like structure in the inner ear where sensitive cells convey sound to the brain. Hearing loss occurs due to aging, working with noisy machines and too many loud concerts. Over time, hair-like sensory cells and bundles of neurons that transmit their vibrations break down, as do ribbon-like synapses, which connect the cells.

The researchers designed a molecule combining 7,8-dihydroxyflavone, which mimics a protein critical for development and function of the nervous system, and bisphosphonate, a type of drug that sticks to bones. The pairing of the two delivered the breakthrough solution, the researchers said, as neurons responded to the molecule, regenerating synapses in mouse ear tissue that led to repair of the hair cells and neurons, which are essential to hearing.

“We’re not saying it’s a cure for hearing loss,” McKenna said. “It’s a proof of principle for a new approach that’s extremely promising. It’s an important step that offers a lot of hope.”

Hearing loss is projected to increase as the U.S. population ages. Previous research has shown that hearing loss is expected to nearly double in 40 years. Damage to the inner ear can lead to “hidden hearing loss,” which is difficulty hearing whispers and soft sounds, especially in noisy places. The new research gives hope to many hoping to avoid loss of hearing and quality of life.

Chapter Twenty - Quox Quietly Quits Continued

Having left his crown and sceptre behind when he fled, the old nome no longer seemed kingly, but more like a beggerman.

Several times had Ruggedo crept up to the mouth of the caverns, only to find the six eggs still on guard. He knew quite well that he must accept his fate and become a homeless wanderer, but his chief regret now was that he had neglected to fill his pockets with gold and jewels.

He was aware that a wanderer with wealth at his command would fare much better than one who was a pauper, so he still loitered around the caverns wherein he knew so much treasure was stored, hoping for a chance to fill his pockets.

That was how he came to recollect the Metal Forest.

the 1990s some of these international Red Flag have included frenemies and thus lacked the use of classified items. Often described as more diplomacy than training these unclassified exercises were nonetheless useful, at least to let these nations get a close look at each other’s aircraft and pilots.

Since 2011 the Israeli Air Force has hosted foreign fighter pilots for tactical training using locally developed Red Flag technology. Israeli fighter pilots are considered the best trained in the world and one reason for that is the use of the best training methods available. As part of that Israel maintains a special training program, complete with pilots trained and equipped to operate as likely foes would, to train their own pilots. Initially the Israelis hosted fighters and pilots for training from Poland, Italy and Greece. This was a good source of income and also good diplomacy as these were countries that Israel was on good terms with.

In 2013 Israel began holding “Blue Flag” exercises, which are free for participants and by invitation. This became a good way to note which countries Israel could depend on militarily. The 2017 Blue Flag will have contingents from the United States, Greece, Poland, France, Germany, India and Italy. Meanwhile Israel continues to attend the American Red Flag events and recently those have included Middle Eastern nations that Israel is technically at war with (over the Palestinian issue). But because Israel and these other Middle Eastern nations have some common enemies (Iran and Islamic terror groups like ISIL and al Qaeda) and Israel is the most powerful and technologically advanced military power in the region a growing number of Arab states are openly working with the Israelis.

One reason for this change in attitudes is that the current Israeli Air Force training center is based on the one pioneered by the U.S. Air Force Red Flag program and the U.S. Navy’s Top Gun training back in the 1960s. Using American aircraft

for “aggressor (or dissimilar) training” began in the 1960s. The original “Top Gun” fighter pilot school was established in 1969 by the U.S. Navy in response to the poor performance of its pilots against North Vietnamese pilots flying Russian fighters. What made the Top Gun operation different was that the training emphasized how the enemy aircraft and pilots operated. This was called “dissimilar training”. In the past, American pilots practiced against American pilots, with everyone flying American aircraft and using American tactics. It worked in World War II because the enemy pilots were not getting a lot of practice and were using similar aircraft and tactics anyway. Most importantly, there was a lot of aerial combat going on, providing ample opportunity for on-the-job training. Not so in Vietnam, where the quite different Russian-trained North Vietnamese were giving U.S. aviators an awful time. The four week Top Gun program solved the problem. The air force followed shortly with its Red Flag school.

Since the 1970s the two training programs have developed differently, and the entire concept of “dissimilar training” has changed. The navy kept Top Gun as a program to hone a fighter pilot’s combat skills. The air force made their Red Flag program more elaborate, bringing in the many different types of aircraft involved in combat missions (especially electronic warfare). But after the Cold War ended it became increasingly obvious

that none of America’s potential enemies was providing their fighter pilots with much training at all.

In other words, the dissimilar training for U.S. fighter pilots was not as crucial as it had been during the Cold War. Actually, it had been noted that flying skills of Soviet pilots was declining in the 1980s, as economic problems in the USSR caused cuts in flying time. During that period American pilots were actually increasing their flying time. Moreover, U.S. flight simulators were getting better. American pilots were finding that even the game oriented combat flight simulators had some training value.

So in the late 1990s, Top Gun and Red Flag found their budgets cut. But the programs remain, as does the memory of why they were set up in the first place. If we find that, say, China is continuing to improve its combat aviation, and gives its fighter pilots more flying time and their politicians maintain a bellicose attitude towards the U.S.. Because of this trend, there will be a need to increase American Top Gun training. That is what happened after 2010 and with the new Chinese “dissimilar training” effort, the U.S. Top Gun and Red Flag schools are being restored to their former prominence. Because Israel has been at war or under imminent threat of attack since the late 1940s Israel has developed one of the best Red Flag operations outside the United States. The Chinese effort to create a Red Flag operation is based largely on the success the United States and Israel have had with it and shows that they are serious about preparing their pilots to fight and defeat Taiwanese and American pilots. Dissimilar training is how that is done and for many nations Israel is the nearest place to get it. What this training does not provide you with is training for those rare “take a chance” moments the Israeli pilot survived over Syria on February 10th.

“Aha!” said he to himself, “I alone know the way to that Forest, and once there I can fill my pockets with the finest jewels in all the world.”

He glanced at his pockets and was grieved to find them so small.

Perhaps they might be enlarged, so that they would hold more. He knew of a poor woman who lived in a cottage at the foot of the mountain, so he went to her and begged her to sew pockets all over his robe, paying her with the gift of a diamond ring which he had worn upon his finger.

The woman was delighted to possess so valuable a ring and she sewed as many pockets on Ruggedo’s robe as she possibly could.

Then he returned up the mountain and, after gazing cautiously around to make sure he was not observed, he touched a spring in a rock and it swung slowly backward, disclosing a broad passageway. This he entered, swinging the rock in place behind him.

However, Ruggedo had failed to look as carefully as he might have done, for Polychrome was seated only a little distance off and her clear eyes marked exactly the manner in which Ruggedo had released the hidden spring. So she rose and hurried into the cavern, where she told Kaliko and her friends of her discovery.

“I’ve no doubt that that is a way to the Metal Forest,” exclaimed Shaggy. “Come, let us follow Ruggedo at once and rescue my poor brother!”

They agreed to this and King Kaliko called together a band of nomes to assist them by carrying torches to light their way.

“The Metal Forest has a brilliant light of its own,” said he, “but the passage across the valley is likely to be dark.”

Polychrome easily found the rock and touched the spring, so in less than an hour after Ruggedo had entered they were all in the passage and following swiftly after the former King.

“He means to rob the Forest, I’m sure,” said Kaliko; “but he

will find he is no longer of any account in this Kingdom and I will have my nomes throw him out.”

“Then please throw him as hard as you can,” said Betsy, “for hedeserves it. I don’t mind an honest, out-an’-out enemy, who

fights square; but changing girls into fiddles and ordering ‘em put into Slimy Caves is mean and tricky, and Ruggedo doesn’t deserve any sympathy. But you’ll have to let him take as much treasure as he can get in his pockets, Kaliko.”

“Yes, the Jinjin said so; but we won’t miss it much. There is more treasure in the Metal Forest than a million nomes could carry in their pockets.”

It was not difficult to walk through this passage, especially when the torches lighted the way, so they made good progress. But it proved to be a long distance and Betsy had tired herself with walking and was seated upon the back of the mule when the passage made a sharp turn and a wonderful and glorious light burst upon them. The next moment they were all standing upon the edge of the marvelous Metal Forest.

It lay under another mountain and occupied a great domed cavern, the roof of which was higher than a church steeple. In this space the industrious nomes had built, during many years of labor, the most beautiful forest in the world.
