Preparation
• Let your attire, body language speak for you • Never start with an apology • Begin with an anecdote, quotation, poem • Humor can popularize you • Use simple, conversational language • Speak with enthusiasm, conviction • Do not read word by word from your notes
• Establish proper eye-‐contact • Be an actor. You lead; make the audience follow you • Avoid sitting; standing behind a podium • Appropriately use hand gestures , facial expressions • Keep your intonation up and down • Question; ponder and remind your audience • Pause during applause • Open with an impact and close with a direction • Remain mindful of your time
• Endorsing, refuting and reviewing previous speakers • Silence is better than Um’s and Ah’s • “You know(s)”, “likes”, “wells”, “you already know(s)” • Not taking ample pauses • Use of difficult, bookish, old-‐fashioned vocabulary • Self-‐bashing, bragging • Failing to recognize that public speaking is an acquired skill.
