As
A idéia
Essas marcas

Olinda that reinvents itself
Before the last Carnival, Aprigio and Frederick met once again
to climb the slopes. They made the path of the revelers, the bohemians
and lovers followed by two historical characters of the festivities of
Carnival, the “cabeções”. Along the way, were spreading their heads in
the corners of the historic site, since the Miracles to the cathedral, past
the fountain of Praça do Carmo Carmo Square, the cemetery and the
church of São João dos Militares in Amparo.
It was in this temple tour that began the whole story. In 1978, the
brothers began to investigate the drawings left by anonymous people
in the vicinity of the church. The project, named From the sidewalks of
Olinda, yielded several series of works, until the pair decided to take
ownership of new elements typically from Olinda. The new initiatives
not only stripped pictorial features of the city, they added as well as
shapes and colors, as in the series mended Olinda, 2008. In this work,
the artists paint shadows on the facades of the houses in positions and
shapes that could never exist in them - most often contradicting the
position of the sun’s rays fall upon the houses.
A location dotted with tourist spots, the brothers seek to offer a
new vision of humanity’s cultural heritage. The idea is that the city
can be discovered in its entirety, and not only seen as a succession
of postcards. For this, Frederick explains that they avail themselves of
the details that normally people can not see. “We seek, for example,
emphasized the precariousness of certain situations. It’s a way to
denounce the precarious, but also enhance its plasticity. It’s the
same process we use to highlight the designs made by popular, on the
sidewalks. These tags are disappearing and nobody gives them due
importance. Therefore, we mark the drawings with circles, as police
circumvent the bodies in the street, “says Frederick.
