LAGNIAPPE Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, April 1, 2012

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our mission as the Body of Christ in the parish of St. Jean Vianney is to model the love of Jesus by discerning and doing God’s will, consciously Sharing the Word and Eucharist at worship, educating in faith all ages, evangelizing our parishioners for Christ’s mission, and serving justly God’s people, our sisters and brothers within our parish boundaries, our larger Baton Rouge community, and into the world.

Keeping Holy Week at

St. Jean Vianney

Holy week begins today with Passion [Palm] Sunday. During Holy Week the church celebrates the great Triduum, which means three days, reckoned from Holy Thursday evening through Easter Sunday evening. These are the great celebration of Church life:

Holy Thursday Evening Mass Of The Lord’s Supper; Thursday, April 5th, 7:00pm: this includes Holy Eucharist, the washing of the feet, and concludes with prayer vigil before the Blessed Sacrament until 11:00pm.

Good Friday Service: Friday, April 6th, 3:00pm: this service includes the Passion Account according to St. John, the Veneration of the Cross, and Holy Communion. Later that evening, the Vigil will continue around the Holy Cross from 6:30-9:00pm.

Easter Saturday Vigil: Saturday, April 7th, 8:00pm: this includes the lighting of the New Fire, the Vigil Scriptures, Baptismal Initiation, Holy Eucharist.

Easter Sunday: Sunday April 8th, 7:30, 9:30, and 11:30am Easter Eucharist.

During the Triduum we attempt to ‘drop out’ of the normal, entertainment or distractions. We also keep the “Easter Fast”, which is a fast of anticipation of what is to come at Easter. These are like retreat days for the parish. If we keep these days at home, we can better celebrate them at Church. Make sure you are part of these days of worship at. St. Jean Vianney. IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN, BRING THEM and help them learn about these important traditions of the Catholic Faith.

LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, Welcome to the beginning of Holy Week. On and, off this week our parish will gather to commemorate the saving events of the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I hope you will be with us. As always, I am inviting you to come and share in these services. Holy Week begins this weekend with the Blessing of Palms. A palm branch is a tangible sacramental which initiates the controversy which Jesus Christ presents to the city of Jerusalem as we tell the story of his passion and death. The Gospel of Mark will be our storyteller. Wednesday morning at the Cathedral the diocese celebrates the Chrism Mass at 10:30am, with the blessing of the Oil of the Sick, the Oil of Catechumens, and the Oil of Chrism highlighting this Mass. You are invited to be present and celebrate this day which deeply expresses our diocesan desire for unity. Holy Thursday evening we cross over from Lent into the season of the Triduum, or the Three Days. We reckon these three days beginning Holy Thursday evening until Good Friday evening, Good Friday evening until Holy Saturday evening, and Holy Saturday evening until Easter Sunday evening. The Triduum is our time to “drop out” of the normal, to fast from what ordinarily distracts us, or tempts us to forget the issues of life and death which go on around and in us daily. So we are to “fast” from the normal, the actions and things that we fill up with that dulls the pain of living and hoping. What we do in Church these three days makes sense to the extent that we try to keep these three days at home. Holy Thursday at 7:00pm we will celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, with the washing of feet and a Vigil before the Blessed Sacrament until 11:00pm. Good Friday Service of the Passion picks up where we left off Thursday night, with the reading of the Passion of St. John, the Veneration of the Holy Cross, and Holy Communion. Easter Vigil begins at 8:00pm, with the Blessing of the New Firelight, Celebration of the Vigil Word, Christian Initiation, and the Eucharist. Easter Sunday will proclaim the Resurrection and give opportunity for the renewal of baptismal vows. I do hope you will be a part of this week with the parish. Please bring your children and grandchildren for them to gain some insight into why these days

are the center of the liturgical year. Love,

PLEASE PRAY FOR UNBAPTIZED ELECT AND OUR BAPTIZED CANDIDATES

During this Lenten season, we ask your prayers for the unbaptized Elect and the baptized Candidates who are enrolled in the RCIA process of our parish. These individuals have been involved in this process for several months and are now entering into an intense period of reflection and prayer. In the entrance of our church you will see a display with the names and photographs of the Elect and Candidates who are requesting Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist through the RCIA process. When you see these adults and children at Mass, please introduce yourself and let them know that you are praying for them. Through your prayers and words of encouragement, those who seek to know Him in the Catholic faith, will feel the genuine love and support of the commu-nity of St. Jean Vianney.

Cory and Karen White are proud to receive our son, Hayden Bentley-James White, on March 12, 2012. Hayden was born on February 12, 2012. We would like to thank everyone for their thoughts

and prayers during our long adoption process. We feel very blessed to be part of the St. Jean Vianney family. We look forward to introducing Hayden to the SJV community soon.

The Catholic Daughters will have their annual Easter egg hunt on Sunday, April 1st. Registration is not required.

A REFLECTION ON THIS WEEK’S GOSPEL

WE DON’T GO ALONE Jesus, the humble village carpenter, frequently attracted large crowds with his preaching. A moment of apparent triumph and glory came when these same people in Jerusalem acclaimed him as king, probably hoping he would be a new military leader and overthrow the occupying Romans. This “triumph” was brief, however. In a few days the same crowds turned on him. Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, didn’t know what to make of him. Jesus was obviously no common criminal. He spoke truthfully and was not cowed in Pilate’s presence. Yet Pilate finally gave up and had Jesus put to death. Ever since that first Good Friday, those who pass through the darkest nights know they don’t go alone. For each of us Jesus obediently and willingly entered the pain and sorrow of humanity. He counted the milestones along the way of despair, and fell into the abyss of death. There are no dead-end streets anymore. For us, at the end of every road, there shines the light of Christ. Awakening Faith/Catholics Come Home

If someone you care about is interested in returning to the Catholic faith, let them know there is nothing

to fear, and that there is a community and fellowship waiting to welcome them home. The LORD

promised that HE will always love and remember them. It only takes an open heart, prayer, and some

encouragement to take that first step back home.
