Second Collection Next Weekend The second Collection next Weekend will be for Cath-olic Home Missions. This is the name for dioceses and parishes in the United States, including its territo-ries and former territories, which cannot provide basic pastoral services to Catholics without outside help. Basic pastoral services include Mass and sacraments, religious education, and ministry training for priests, deacons, religious sisters and lay people. Surprisingly, the Catholic Church is poorly established in many parts of our country, especially Appalachia, the South, the Southwest along the Mexican border, the Rocky Mountain States, Alaska, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and remote island chains like the Marshalls and the Carolines in the Pacific. Please be generous! STEWARDSHIP OF THE PAST WEEK Our Response to God’s Generosity to Us Offertory………………………$ 4,436.85 Building Fund…………....……$ 2,083.00 Thank You! In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells Peter again and again, “If you love Me, feed my sheep.” He says the same to each of us, “If you love Me, use the gifts I have given you to serve your brothers and sisters”

From the Pastor’s Desk

One of the things I find interesting about the way we pray the Nicene Creed at Mass is that we all bow to-gether at the words, “and became man”. Certainly, it is an appropriate recognition of the importance, and even necessity of the Incarnation. Everything that Jesus said and did and was depends on that moment when he took flesh in the womb of the Virgin, by the power of the Holy Spirit. When we profess our belief in that unique event, it is appropriate to bow down in awe and wonder and thanksgiving.

What I find striking about that is that we don’t bow, or do anything else, when we profess belief in the Resurrection. And that is of course the event which brought about our redemption in Christ Jesus. He came into the world in order that he might suffer, and die, and rise from the dead, in order that we might live with him for-ever. Certainly that could not have happened as it did had he not been born into the world. But the Resurrection remains the finale and high point of Christ’s redeeming work.

In that light, it makes sense that we celebrate the season of Christmas for a couple of weeks, depending on dates and days of the week. But the Easter season goes on much longer, and rightfully so. For almost two months, we continue to celebrate in a special way what we commemorate every Sunday, with each and every Sunday being a ‘little Easter’, (not a little Christmas!) From another perspective, the Christmas season lasts about as long as the poinsettias do. But the Easter season continues long after the demise of the last Easter lily.

All of this brings me to the particular challenge that I think we all face at this time of the year. How do we maintain Easter joy for almost two months? Right now, it’s fairly easy. A few Easter blooms remain, we continue to recall our Baptism with the Sprinkling Rite on some Sundays, and the presence of the Paschal Candle standing front and center is still noticeable. But as the weeks go by, and especially as we get busy with the annual events of each May (graduations, Mother’s Day, start of summer), Easter easily slides into the background. When Pente-cost finally arrives, it comes almost as a surprise, with Easter being a rather distant memory.

So, just a few suggestions. Continue to be attentive to the Scriptures, particularly from the Acts of the Apostles. In Acts, we hear how the Jesus of Easter became a living reality in the lives of the earliest believers. We might also recall on occasion the events of Holy Week. Receive Communion, and remember the night of the First Eucharist. Gaze upon the cross, and recall the events of Good Friday. Imagine going to the tomb that first Easter Sunday morning, and finding it empty. The Lord of Easter is alive and dwelling in our midst!
