4 VBS 2013 M IAM I
WELCOME to the first Vit-Buckle Society stand-alone meeting! We are delighted to welcome you to not only a new surgical retina meeting, but
a new kind of meeting: a forum aimed at up and coming, energetic, vitreoretinal
surgeons willing to discuss surgical techniques and medical practices in an open
and highly interactive environment among colleagues. The distinction between
faculty and audience is gone. Everyone is a participant. Everyone is a speaker.
Be prepared to offer up your ideas, insights and challenges by interacting with
presenters, moderators, industry… everyone.
This meeting is made possible by your experiences and knowledge as well as the
generous support of the companies listed at the end of the program. Their support
of this new and untested meeting stands as a testament to their dedication to
our profession.
Now, share your experiences, voice your concerns and thoughts about other
surgeons’ experiences, and most importantly leave this meeting feeling that you
contributed and learned something to incorporate into your practice.
Thank you for coming to Miami Beach. We look forward to our time together!

Allan E. Kreiger, MD is Professor of
Ophthalmology at the David Geffen School
of Medicine at UCLA. His clinical practice
in general includes diseases of the retina and
vitreous with emphasis on traumatic injuries,
diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration,
and retinal detachment. He received his
specialty training at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in
Boston and is a member of the American Ophthalmological Society
and the Retina Society.
Dr. Kreiger is the Director of the Vitreoretinal Surgical Fellowship
at the Jules Stein Eye Institute and his teaching activities include
interactions with medical students, ophthalmology residents, and
vitreoretinal fellows. Over the course of his career, he has been
instrumental in mentoring over 50 fellows from all over the world in
the art of scleral buckling and vitrectomy surgery. He serves as the
faculty advisor to the Jules Stein operating rooms and does extensive
editing and reviewing work for numerous scientific journals in the
field of ophthalmology. He has recently given several named lecture-
ships including the Taylor Smith Lecture, the Delbert Nachazel
Lecture, and the Paul Sternberg Lecture.
Dr. Kreiger’s research interests include the development of
innovative vitreoretinal surgical techniques and the elucidation of
the natural history of complex retinal detachments. He is an investi-
gator on a number of clinical trials regarding retinal diseases and
their treatment being conducted at the Jules Stein Eye Institute.

Stanley Chang, MD, is the K.K. Tse and Ku Teh
Ying Professor of Ophthalmology at Columbia
University Medical Center. Dr. Chang completed
his medical degree at the College of Physicians &
Surgeons of Columbia University. After residency
at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, he was a
vitreoretinal fellow at the Bascom Palmer Eye
Institute. Dr. Chang joined the Dept. of Ophthalmology at Cornell
University Medical School, where he rose to the rank of Professor. In
1995 he was appointed Edward S. Harkness Professor and Chairman of
the Dept. of Ophthalmology at Columbia University, and Director of
the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute. In 2012 he stepped down as
chairman but remains an active faculty member.
Dr. Chang has developed and pioneered several revolutionary surgical
approaches to treat complicated forms of retinal detachment, improving
outcomes for patients worldwide. He was the first to use perfluoro-
propane gas in the management of retinal detachments caused by scar
tissue proliferation (PVR) on the retina. He developed perfluorocarbon
liquids, a ‘heavy liquid’ used in flattening retinal detachment, and the
related surgical techniques for vitreoretinal surgery. In collaboration
with Avi Grinblat, he developed a panoramic viewing system.
He is the recipient of several honors including the Hermann Wacker
Prize from the Club Jules Gonin, Helmerich Prize from the American
Society of Retina Specialists, the Lifetime Achievement Honor Award
and the Charles Schepens Lecture from the American Academy of
Ophthalmology, the Jackson Memorial Lecture and the Alcon
Research Institute Award. Consistently named as one of America’s best
doctors, Dr. Chang was selected as National Physician of the Year by
the Castle Connolly Guides in 2008.
