The First Commandment

I would like to explain a little more about

the meaning of this covenant we have with

the Lord. He gives us life, love,

and in Jesus, salvation from sin, and receiving his love,

promise to keep his commandment (s), the ten and the new

commandment of love with our whole being. But, we need

him, the Holy Spirit and his grace, to grow in keeping those

promises of love that we make at our baptism and renew

throughout our lives. If we don’t wish to hear or try to keep

these commandments, then we really don’t love the Lord.

We are breaking our covenant with him and can’t expect

that he will fulfill his promises to us. How do we fall in love

with the Lord more? That is the question when one finds

oneself in this state towards God.

The first commandment is: “I, the Lord, am your God,

who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of

slavery. You shall not have other gods besides

me…..” (Exodus 20:2-6). Having a “god” besides the one God

of Abraham means idolatry. Idolatry - worship of anything

except God - is forbidden by the nature of reality. “Idolatry

consists in divinizing what is not God. Man commits

idolatry whenever he honors and reveres a creature in place

of God, … whether this be gods” [pagan polytheism,

worshipping imaginary gods] “or demons (for example,

satanism), power, pleasure, race, ancestors, the state,

money, etc.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC

henceforth], 2113). “Treating God as a creature is utterly

contrary to reality. So is treating any creature as

God” (Peter Kreeft, Catholic Christianity, p. 207).

So far we have heard the negative side of the first

commandment, but the positive side comes from Matthew

4:10, “You shall worship the Lord your God”. One of the

gifts of the Holy Spirit is “fear of the Lord”. This is what is

commanded here. However, it is not a servile fear of

something evil, but the awe and adoration of something

infinitely good. This is positive, for “the worship of the one

God sets man free from turning in on himself, from the

slavery of sin and the idolatry of the world” (CCC 2097).

Every sin is really a sin against the first commandment.

All sin serves some other god, obeys some other

commander: the world, the flesh (self-idolatry), or the devil.

But, we need more specifics to help us understand how to

worship God alone. There are the other commandments

and some specific sins against the first commandment as

found in the Catechism:

“Superstition is the deviation of religious feeling and of the

practices this feeling imposes…such as, when one

attributes an importance in some way magical to certain

practices otherwise lawful or necessary. To attribute the

efficacy of prayers or of sacramental signs to their mere

external performance, apart from the interior dispositions

that they demand, is to fall into superstition”[cf. Mt. 23:16

-22] (CCC 2111).

“The first commandment condemns polytheism” [worship of

many gods] (CCC 2112)

“All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan

or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely

supposed to ‘unveil’ the future [cf Deut. 18:10; Jer 29:8].

Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading,

interpretation of omens and lots… clairvoyance, and

recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over

time, history, and in the last analysis, other human beings,

as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They

contradict the honor respect, and loving fear that we owe

to God alone” (CCC 2116)

….there are more following this paragraph in the

Catechism. For a good adult examination of conscience,

based on the ten commandments, we have pamphlets at the

entrance of the confessionals (and library) on the

southwest side of the church.

Next time, I plan to write about second and third

commandment. God bless you and have a great week!

For those of you that have never been to the Stations of the

Cross, we invite you! Stations take about 30 to 40 minutes.

INDIVIDUAL CONFESSIONS

Please note there are NO confessions on Holy Thursday,

Good Friday, Holy Saturday or Easter Sunday.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

The Christian faithful are to do penance through prayer,

fasting, abstinence, and exercising works of piety and

charity. All Fridays during the year are penitential days,

especially during Lent, . All who have reached their 14th

birthday are to abstain from eating meat all Fridays during

Lent.

From age 18 until our 59th birthday, we are to fast on

Good Friday. Only one full meal is allowed on days of fast.

Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be

taken according to one’s need (liquids are allowed).

The obligation does not apply to those whose health or

ability to work would be affected seriously. People in doubt

about fasting or abstinence should consult a parish priest or

confessor. Many Christians do more fasting than the law

requires, for example, many will be fasting on only bread

and water during Fridays of Lent, rather than eating one full

and two partial meals. It is good to discern with a spiritual

director, spouse, or friend, what particular approach would

be good for you.

Feast of the Divine Mercy (the Sunday following Easter) be

preceded by a Novena of Chaplets to the Divine Mercy

which would begin on Good Friday. “I desire that during

these nine days you bring souls to the fount of My mercy, that

they may draw there from strength and refreshment and

whatever graces they need in the hardship of life and,

especially, at the hour of death.” (1209) Additionally, He

promised, "By this Novena

(of Chaplets), I will grant

every possible grace to

souls." (796)

Hour of Great Mercy.

of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole

for decades.

MENTOR. SUPPORT. PRAY. LEAD. LOVE.

A cornerstone of our ministry in the St. Albert/St. Michael

community is in relational ministry through Discipleship

Groups. These groups consist of 1-2 adult leaders and

5-7 girls or 5-7 guys that journey together towards being a

disciple of Jesus Christ in our world today.

The role of a D-group leader is to simply build relationships

with the teens in the group, to encourage them in their faith

and love them as God has loved us.

D-group leaders do not need to have experience in working

with teens, just a heart for Jesus, his Church and his children!

Attend an Information Meeting and find out more!

Saturday, April 27 at 10:30 am at St. Albert’s Parish

Center or Tuesday, May 7 at 7:15 pm at St. Michael

Church. Come and See! Am I called? Am I not?

Open Adoration!

Thursday, May 16, we will again be hosting two hours of

Open Adoration from 7 to 9 p.m., including silent prayer,

praise and worship music, and prayer ministry. The church

will be open and attended at all times that evening for

guests with questions or specific needs, and people can

come and go freely during the two-hour period.

All parishioners are encouraged to attend—but more

importantly, to invite your friends and neighbors, whether

they’re Catholic or not.

Ask if they have personal needs or prayer intentions you

can bring to the altar for them.

Invite them to join us, even for a few minutes, in front of

the Blessed Sacrament that evening.
