Sam JangTAE GEUK 3 — RI/Fire

Ri, the symbol for the third Tae Geuk form, means fire, sun and

light. Literally, the sun contains immense energy, and has great

intensity—a key component of TKD practice. Metaphorically, fire

represents the passion of a martial artist at this advanced beginner

stage. There are block/punch and block/kick combinations that

require bursts of energy and coordination as defense becomes

counter-attack.

Meet Your Instructors

Mr. Torres — certified 4th Dan Black Belt.

Mr. Torres started his martial arts training over 15 years ago while attending UC Santa Cruz. At the time, Tae Kwon Do was offered as part of the University’s PE program by a local Tae Kwon Do Master that had his own private dojang in the city. Discovering this information, Mr. Torres jumped on the opportunity straight away! This was the beginning of new way of life which opened many opportunities, such as, training in Aikido, at UC Berkeley’s TKD program, and eventually joining Silva Tae kwon Do over 10 years ago.

When the moment arrived to attend graduate school at San Jose State University, Master Silva was the only Master in the area...

...that was happy and willing to work with Mr. Torres’ work and school schedule so he could continue training. Soon after joining Silva Tae Kwon Do, Mr. Torres began assisting and teaching classes as a red belt. The rest is history, and a future in the making, with Silva Martial Arts as a permanent home for Mr. Torres.

Mr. Torres holds a fourth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; a martial art that he trains in three days a week that focuses on grappling and ground self-defense techniques, and which he teaches to SMA advance belts. Mr. Torres enjoys teaching and seeing the progress that SMA students make over time and sometimes in front of his eyes! When Mr. Torres is not at the studio during his normal teaching hours, he is traveling the world on behalf of the company he works for and helped start a few years back.

Earth Day Coloring

Earth Day is a day for us to think about how we are impacting the earth with our decisions like recycling, and protecting the rain forests! You can celebrate by finding a fun nature picture (like above) to color in!

ANSWER: _ _ _ _(Use the letters in the red circles!)

Do you know the Korean word for chest gear?

April TipYou might already know that in order to test, you will need three stripes: green, red, and yellow. Do you know why we use the stripe system?

Stripes are like a checklist for you and your instructor. They signal that you can show your techniques correctly.

Remember not to stress about whether you have stripes. Instead, try your best in all your classes, and remember that the stripes will come when you are ready!
