Surrey’s Vaisakhi event the second largest outside IndiaMore than 200,000 people expected

Surrey are expecting another record crowd – even larger than last year’s 200,000 people.

Parade spokesperson Moninder Singh Buar said there’s a “buzz in the community” leading up to the celebration, indicating the number of attendees could even be larger.

“Over the last year or so, there’s been a lot more community engagement from the youth in Surrey,” Buar said. “There’s a lot more buzz around the celebration around the religious side.”

For the past few years, Surrey has been home to the largest Vaisakhi parade outside of India.

Vaisakhi occurs in mid-April each year and coincides with the time of � rst crop harvesting in Punjab, and also marks the anniversary of one of Sikhism’s most important religious events, the establishment of Khalsa in 1699.

Attendance at Surrey’s annual Vaisakhi event, which is now in its 12th year and is coordinated by the Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar temple in Newton, has usually hovered between 80,000 and 100,000. But a couple of factors led to the increase last year, one of which Buar expects will be duplicated.

“A big reason is the parades in Vancouver and Surrey are now on di� erent days, so people who had to choose one or the other now do both,” Buar said, noting the Vancouver event also attracts large crowds.

Vancouver’s Vaisakhi celebration takes place April 13, while Surrey’s is on April 20.

“There wasn’t a lot of communication between the two groups for a while, but there is a lot more now,” Buar said. “It bene� ts both of us.”

The weather also cooperated last year, Buar added, after rain fell on the 2010 parade.

“If the weather holds, de� nitely we expect to have as many people this year,” said Buar. “We usually expect around 100,000, but last year was a surge, it was unexpected. But we did do more promotion and marketing.”

More than 2,500 participants from over 20 community groups are expected to participate this year. See Page 5

LEADER FILE PHOTOOrganizers of this year’s Vaisakhi parade in Surrey are expecting another record crowd – even larger than last year’s 200,000 people.

The parade is set to begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m., beginning and ending at the Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar (12885 85 Ave.).

With a variety of � oats and community groups in the procession, the parade heads south on 128 Street, proceeds west along 82 Avenue, heads south again on 124 Street, continues along 75 Avenue and then 76 Avenue, before going north again on 128 Street back to the temple grounds.

Musicians and dancers will be performing on temporary stages alongside the parade route.

Road closures will be in e� ect from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and drivers can expect delays if travelling between 72 and 88 Avenues, and Scott Road and King George Boulevard. Those attending the parade are encouraged to use transit or walk.

“The only problem last year, with so many people, was that there were bottlenecks along the route,” said Buar. “So we’re asking people to be patient, allow for some extra time. Enjoy the stages along the way.”

The day is capped o� with a big � reworks display around 10 p.m. o� the roof of the gurdwara.

(on Saturday, April 20 this year) begins a new calendar in the Sikh religion.

This year, there’s a groundswell to do more community work within Surrey, says celebration spokesperson Moninder Singh Buar, meaning there will be an increase in the amount of food, time and money donated to various causes.

“Living in Surrey, this is what do we do for Surrey.”

In Sikh religion, it’s called seva, or sel� ess service.

“What bene� t can we be to the overall community?” says Buar of the concept. “There’s an increase amongst youth who want to do things.”

As an example, he cites an abundance of food in the various Sikh temples that can be donated into the community.

Education will also be a big component of seva for many in 2013, Buar predicts, with the Sikh community helping out with the multicultural aspect to education.

Hopefully, he says, that will take the form of a multi-faith group that would visit Surrey schools, and “one or two concerts or larger public events, that maybe aren’t religious-based, they are more culture-based,” Buar says. “We’re trying to teach the similarities in life.”

Buar also expects more Sikhs will get involved in politics, going to town hall meetings and such.

“There’s a youth engagement more from the social welfare side,” Buar said. “It’s sort of a new year within the Punjabi calendar.

“It’s sort of the way you would come up with a New Year’s resolution. We kind of come up with a few of ours.”

The Vaisakhi parade begins at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday.

The awards, which honour individuals and groups for their “unrelenting and sel� ess” service (seva) to the community, will be handed out during the � fth annual Vaisakhi Gala & Seva Awards on April 26.

Past winners have included a group that helps feed the hungry, a community photographer, a seniors’ advocate and even a wrestling club.

Butter ChickenINGREDIENTS:

8–10 boneless, skinless chicken breasts1 head garlic (8-10 cloves)1 10-oz can tomato pasteLarge chunk of ginger, peeled1 tsp Kashmiri masala (or any kind of masala)2 green chilies (small, long ones)1 green bell pepper, diced1 red bell pepper, diced1 tsp kastoori methi1 tsp cumin seeds2 tsp salt2 tsp tandoori masala3 tbsp honey1 10-oz can coconut milk500 ml. whipping cream1/2 lb butter (use less if you prefer)

METHOD:

Dice chicken breast into bite-sized pieces.In a large skillet, melt 1/3 of the butter. Addchicken and 1/2 tsp. of tandoori masala.Cook until chicken is no longer pink.Remove from heat and set aside.In a food processor, combine garlic, gingerand chilies. Pulse until � nely minced.In a large pot, add two-thirds of the butter,kashmiri masala, garlic mixture, bellpeppers, kastoori methi, cumin seeds, saltand tandoori masala.Cook all ingredients on medium heat untilbubbling. Stir in tomato paste, honey andcoconut milk.

Add the chicken from skillet, whippingcream and milk. Simmer partially covered on low heat for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve over rice and enjoy.

On April 13, 2013, marches the entire congregation, in cooperation, in remembrance of Khalsa’s inauguration,

Sikh history runs in operation, with morality it comes in corroboration.

Today we walk together in front of the camera, wearing either a shawl, scarf, or a rumal that looks like a bandana, we walk with full concentration, alertness and stamina.

Despite class, here we all balance ourselves at equal standards,

At this satsung, I hear shabads that are being sung, in Gurmukhi grammar, if our mind’s full of questions then the Guru Granth Sahib contains all the answers, that shall lead us to absolute virtue, by means of spiritual manners, large texts are printed across promotional and awareness banners, the Granthis and Amrit Shak march, we also see Gatka dancers.

We remember the 10th guru, Guru

Gobind Singh Ji the son of Guru Tegh Bahadur, he taught us how to show devotion and gratitude for the father, He was our Guru, our God, and our forefather, He u-(knight)ed all sons as “Singhs”, and made the name “Kaur” for the daughters,

He was a mystical poet, a leader, and a martyr, and ever since his departure, the Sikh community grew even larger, to greater extents points have reached farther, souls got brighter and minds have turned sharper, a diciple is a battery and the Guru is the needed (charger).

Together they become one (current) component, we give service to the guru everyday and for the current, moment.

In the past there were � ve diciples, who thought of Guru ji as their true idol, and by the grace of Amrit, they were entitled, to escape from the re-birth cycle, they learned that true salvation and survival, comes only from the Guru’s arrival.

So that is why today, � oats ride on the streets and it’s like a parade, in respect, the Amritdhari, keep a dhari, (beard) that’s never shaved, and in full honour they walk with a blade, oh I wish Guru ji could of seen the celebration that we’ve made, wish that he forever stayed, ever since, he left we have prayed, by living what he taught us his legacy shall never fade.

Today, double 13 on our calendar for Vaisakhi is displayed, and 13 is a lucky number according to what Guru Nanak Dev ji has conveyed, He said “teran” is “tera” not mine, but “yours” to God he gave, which is a very humble way to behave, lets not forget the gracious Amrit that our 10th guru waved, to help aid, the

brave � ve diciples that he made.On Vaisakhi, may we never forget the

sacri� ce that he gave, so that Sikhism could be saved.

Let us elevate our spirits listening attentively to every hymn, and by going within, in order to contact him, escape us from this physical prism, oh Lord show us what is reality and what is wisdom!

Awake us to truth from this spell, this sleep, because we are your students, who (search) and that is why we are known as (Seek)h/(Sikh).
