Comox By The Sea,  Business in Action is making good progress in achieving our 2016 goals. The dynamics of our plan are rooted in long-term projects and business development recognizing the importance of creating a supportive, co-operative environment between the BIA, Town staff, Mayor and council and the citizens.

The Comox BIA, in partnership with Comox Valley Economic Development Society, is focused on development and implementation of strategies to advance both Comox’s unique tourism initiatives as well as a wide range of business development opportunities. This partnership also provides targeted Business Counts Workshops, improved profile in marketing initiatives, the creation of Town of Comox/Development Incentive Marketing Collateral and additional VI Visitor Centre marketing opportunities.

Comox By The Sea BIA has also partnered with the Town of Comox and Comox Rotary to work jointly on the creation of a Rotary Marina Splash Park as part of the Comox Marina Park Enhancement Project. The splash park will create a wonderful place for young Comox families to play close to home and with the unique oceanside setting, become a destination for others, add significantly to the vibrancy of the Park, and provide ample opportunity for locals and visitors alike to explore and experience all that the Comox eclectic retail and award winning restaurant district has to offer.

There is a lot in store for Comox in this year and we are reenergized and open for business.

The  Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce,  a grassroots, non-governmental organization, exists to be the ‘voice of business’ in this community.

The vision of the Chamber is ‘community and business leadership through excellence, innovation, and sustainability.’

The Chamber works hard on behalf of members to engage people in the community by supporting local events and organizations, hosting continuing education programs, and providing plenty of opportunities for collaboration and connection in the Comox Valley.

The Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce has three main focuses for 2016. The first is advocacy. The Chamber speaks up for their members with an independent voice, championing important issues like the Governance Review, Business Taxes, and homelessness issues. The Chamber has a proven track record for making change and ensuring that Business has a voice with all-levels of governments.

The second main focus is member services. The Chamber staff are committed to provide excellent networking opportunities, educational workshops, monthly mixers and a variety of special events throughout the year. Chamber members have access to benefits on group health insurance, merchant services, gas discounts, exclusive event pricing for members, travel and much more.

The final focus is leadership. The Chamber is formalizing the use of a triple bottom line approach to operating which means decisions are made with three factors in mind: cost, environment and community. The Chamber is dedicated to collaboration, mentorship, ethical business practices and team building.

The voice of business in the Comox Valley

The Comox Valley Small Business Association (SBA) is an organization of energetic, dedicated, and serious business owners who value the opportunity to network, share, and learn with other like-minded business people. The CVSBA started in 1998, and is the longest running networking group in the Valley.

If you want to start a business or take a current enterprise to the next level, visit the SBA as our guest. You will experience the enthusiasm, camaraderie, and varied experiences of business owners who truly embrace the entrepreneurial spirit - and welcome you to share it, too.

All small businesses – not just those that are home-based– are welcome to join!

Each monthly meeting includes either a guest speaker or spotlight speaker. Learn about incorporating your business from a lawyer, tax tips from an accountant, managing your expenses from a bookkeeper, cooking pasta from a chef, helping the homeless from a charitable group or Internet safety from the RCMP.

The topics are always to keep us informed, help us be better business owners and better citizens of the Comox Valley.

In the last few years we have included fundraising events to give back to the community. Each fall we offer a big screen event of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, we  hosted a murder mystery night, hold annual trade shows, host a bar-b-que each summer and have a tent in the Canada Day celebrations. In 2015 we have donated food to the food bank, collected at meetings, and raised over $800 for Care-A-Van and other societies from our events.

#WeAreYQQ is a project to create and support an entrepreneurial culture in the Comox Valley.

The project is led by a team of several business owners who want to see a grassroots, entrepreneurial approach taken to growing business in the region. Key to the project’s success are a focus on collaborative marketing and business development for businesses and organizations.

In 2016 the team intends to expand it’s efforts to connect creatives and entrepreneurs in the Comox Valley. They will achieve this by doubling the regular business development workshops to twice a month.

The team also intends to:• Give YQQ businesses what they’re hearing they need:

more training with social marketing, including a monthly collaborative marketing series with Naz Dizai;

• Provide marketing and business development services to entrepreneurs who want to work with the team;

• Find ways to respond to what YQQ entrepreneurs are telling them – they want to grow BIGger, they want to access to new markets; they appreciate being able to work with other YQQ entrepreneurs in a collaborative framework;

• Engage more of the “feeder” organizations in the region – and beyond, reaching out to YVR, YYC, YEG, YYJ to connect with grassroots entrepreneur networks in those cities.

Every year, the Downtown Courtenay Business Improvement Association (DCBIA) pulls out their Strategic Plan, celebrates their successes from the year past, and with a turn of the page marches forward with new enthusiasm.

“This year brings new excitement to our beautification projects.” says Deana Simkin, President of the DCBIA. “Not only are we accepting applications for our 4th annual façade improvement grant that we offer our members every spring, but we have struck a new mural project committee, where we plan to share historical stories of our community in mural form on the sides of downtown buildings.”

Community partnerships are another area of importance to the DCBIA this year. Last October The City of Courtenay held the first phase of their downtown forums, looking for community input into the vision for Downtown Courtenay. Phase two began at the Native Sons Hall where visual options were explored. “This is very important to me” says Simkin, “Five years ago, downtown Courtenay was not even on the City’s radar, now we are part of their top 5 priorities.”

The DCBIA is looking forward to the many projects that are planned for 2016 in downtown Courtenay and are happy to soon be able to share them with the rest of the community.

Partnerships and collaborations across numerous sectors are a significant theme within the 2016 Comox Valley Economic Development Society’s (CVEDS) Work Plan.

The upcoming release of the new Employment and Industrial Lands Foreign Direct Investment Strategy, coupled with the downtown enhancement initiatives undertaken by the Town of Comox and City of Courtenay in 2015 and continuing in 2016, have created the ideal condition with which to drive significant renewed focus in 2016 to the promotion of the regions available lands for commercial, residential and agricultural development & production, as well as for residential and entrepreneurial relocation initiatives.

The 10th annual BC Shellfish & Seafood Festival and Expo will be the largest event the Society undertakes in 2016, in partnership with well over 40 industry associations & businesses, as well as Provincial and Federal Ministry’s. The event is a fine example whereby the CVEDS Programs coalesce around event expansion efforts, destination marketing and visitor services on the tourism side, with export and industry development on the agrifood side, providing an unprecedented venue to enhance the short term and long term wellbeing of the economy through visitation, business expansion, and new export & trade.

The success of the Work Plan implementation has a direct correlation to CVEDS proactive work with hundreds of companies and organizations including, for example, the two downtown Business Improvement Associations, the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce, Innovation Island Technology Assn, Comox Valley Farmers Institute, United Riders of Cumberland, and the Comox Valley Airport. These and numerous other organizations and businesses in the region partner, provide input, and work collaboratively with the Society in its efforts to encourage the responsible expansion of the economic base of the Comox Valley.
