By Faye Gillis WellsBy now, you all p robably have heard

the exciting new s th a t the A m elia E a rh a r t C om m em orative s ta m p has been approved . The F irs t D ay covers will be cancelled a t A tchison, K ansas', w here she w as born, on h er b irthday , Ju ly 24.

The 99s will spa rk the AE C om m em o rativ e S tam p C elebration w ith a F lyaw ay form Atchison, Ju ly 24, w hich will focus w orldw ide a tten tion on the tru e sp irit of A m elia, as ex em plified by the 99s today. This is perfect, tim ew ise for the girls who attended the national m eeting at Oklahom a City, Ju ly 17 to 20.

The F lyaw ay plan w hich we a re fo rm u la ting w ith the P ost Office and the A tchison C ham ber of C om m erce, and with the cooperation of the FAA, is as follows:

1. T here will be X num ber, p robab ly 100,000, F irs t D ay covers, w ith a specia l cach e t read in g : “99 Club- A m elia E a rh a r t S cholarsh ip F u n d ’’. These will sell for $1.00 each.

2. The ch a r te r m em b ers of the 99s who have been flying continuously since the organization w as form ed, 34 years ago, will fly aw ay from A tchison, K ansas' on Ju ly 24th, to a irp o rts in the four corners of the United S ta tes w hich a re lan d m ark s in A m e

lia ’s flying ca reer, such places as:a. Los Angeles, C alifornia, w here

she learned to fly and w here she received the D istinguished F ly ing Cross.

b. L afayette , Ind iana , and P u r due U niversity , the f irs t college in A m erica to have an a i r port and th rough whose efforts, A m elia got h e r “ Flying L a b o ra to ry .”

c. Boston, M assachusetts, w here she w as living when she m ade h e r first flight to glory.

d. W ashington, D. C. w here she

w a s recognized by four p residen ts ; w here h e r poem ‘C oura g e ” w as read into the Congressional R ecord ; and w here she received the N ational Geog rap h ica l Socie ty’s Special Gold M edal, the only w om an to receive it for solo ach ievement.

e. M iami, F lo rida , w here she took off on h er last flight and w here a p laque w as unveiled in her honor a t the In terna tional A irport, la s t year.

f. N ew ark, N ew Je rse y , the te r m inus of h e r reco rd solo flight from M exico City.

g. Idlewild, Long Island, w here the F irs t D ay covers' w ill be tran sfe rred t o com m ercia l "F r ie n d sh ip ” (nam ed fo r her tran sa tla n tic plane) flights to E uropean coun tries th a t have honored her: to E ng land ; to the AE Hotel a t W eisbaden, G erm any ; to F ra n c e w here she r e ceived the K night of the Legion of H onor and the Jean n e d ’A rc m edal; to Belgium w here she w as given the O rder of Leopold; to I ta ly for the Bals m edal. F ittin g cerem onies a re being p lanned to ce leb ra te the issuance of the C om m erative S tam p in all these countries.

E nroute to these term in i, the g irls will touch down a t key a irp o rts . F or exam ple, enroute to Los Angeles, th e re probably would be a landing a t Denver, w here m em bers of the 99s would be w aiting in th e ir planes to fly the F irs t D ay covers northw est to Salt Lake City, Boise and O lym pia. In th is m anner th e 99s w ill b lanket the capitols of A m erica w ith th e ir special Am elia E a rh a r t C o m m erative F irs t D ay covers, and th rough the ir tie -ins w ith the com m ercia l "F rien d sh ip ” flights, a t Los Angeles, M iami and Idlew ild, expedite the ir distribution th roughout the world. All these key points w ill h av e a p propria te cerem onies w ith local dignitaries and ou tstand ing personalities, who have w orked diligently tow ards1 the approval of this honor fo r A m elia.

This will give the sections’ an opportunity to honor the c h a r te r m e m bers, a t the ir local AE C elebrations. E ach section over w hich th e c h a r te r girls will fly should consult the maps, flying conditions, local V IPS and consider other fac ilities; then suggest the best possible stopovers from all these angles, for the AE b irthday parties. The details w ill be w orked out with the individual girls. I t looks like the N orth C entral section is going to he the busiest w ith flyers

streak in g across th e ir te rr ito ry to L a fayette , W ashington, New Y ork and Boston.

W hoever is in charge of the overn igh t local ce leb ra tion on the 24th, should b ea r in m ind th a t the C h a rte r g irls still h av e a h a rd d a y ’s flight ahead of them , so they should not be subject to too m uch feting. R em em ber, the te rm in a l ce leb ra tions w ill be on the 25th.

E v ery ce lebra tion should have dancing, for Am elia considered “ dancing the loveliest pas ttim e in the w o rld ” ; also, it will give the crowd a d iversion in case the flyer is delayed by w eather.

We a re w orking out a ph ila te lic tie- in w ith genial M r. Ja cq u e s M inkus, who head s the G im bel’s S tam p dep artm en t, w hich handled A E ’s covers on h er first flight and are planning on working w ith the o ther 38 E m pire s tam p G alleries th roughout the U nited S ta te s on a com bined prom otion; but m ore about th a t nex t m onth, a fte r the s ta m p is unveiled. This ce re m ony will probably be held a t the A viation Club in W ashington in April.

T here a re lots of exciting ideas* in 1he p lanning s ta g es—tie-ins w ith lib raries , airlines, the Zontas, the Coast G uard , the Air F orce, Wing Scouts and V IPS to m ake th is the m ost fabu lous com m em ora tive s tam p c e le b ra tion in h istory . We have a p rospective m other and daughter team for fu tu re a ir races. K athleen H itchcock’s daugh ter, K am , who presently is a t S tanford U niversity, is our newest m em ber. Lygie H agan , in her Com anche, b rought B a rb a ra Thisted an d Millie to the m eeting, and h e r husband, who had just shed his cast which he has worn since his accident last fall. Lygie did all the flying during th e ir two m onths in the South and Mexico Avhcre they enjoyed sev era l w eeks with the Hensons at M anzanillo. She a t tended a pilo ts’ luncheon in Phoenix. Lygie and Alice K ennedy a re adv isors to an en thusiastic group of Wing Scouts in Spokane. She also is going to instrum ent ground school.

We m ay have set aviation back fifty year, but we had fun doing it! W hat’s za t? W hat’s the red light b link in ’ for?
